AUTOMATIC TEMPERATURE
CONTROLLER
When the mode selector is set to auto, the temperature rheostat is
armed for automatic temperature selection (Figure 21-4). Positioning
the rheostat between cool and warm supplies the desired temperature
demand signal to the controller. In addition, the OAT sensor
supplies an ambient temperature signal to the controller. The cabin
temperature sensor supplies the area temperature signal. Finally,
the duct temperature sensor transmits the duct temperature. The
controller determines the error created by these signals and computes
a correction signal (either hot or cold). The correction signal is
transmitted as pulses to the hot-air mixing valve, driving the valve
in the direction open or closed thereby increasing or decreasing the
volume of hot bleed air supplied to the ejector.

MANUAL TEMPERATURE CONTROL MODE NOTES

When the mode selector switch is set to manual, the automatic
temperature control system is inhibited and the manual temperature
control switch is armed. Holding this switch to the manual cool or
manual warm position drives the valve in the selected direction by
applying 28VDC until the switch is released to the HOLD position.

NOTE
Turning the mode selector switch to the off position
causes the hot-air valve to close.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL NOTES

GENERAL
On airplanes equipped with a surface deice system, a dual-pressure
switch which senses the regulated air pressure is installed. When this
pressure drops to approximately 25 psi, one part of the dual switch
closes and inhibits further movement of the hot-air mixing valve
toward the open position.

NOTE
The dual-pressure switch affects hot-air valve
operation only in the automatic mode. 21

If pressure drops to below 20 psi, the dual pressure-switch removes NOTES

all hot air valve control from the automatic temperature controller
and completely closes the hot-air value. Completely closing this valve
directs all air to the pneumatic package. A pressure drop after the
regulator below 15 psi causes the low-pressure light on the caution
panel to turn on. The light turns off if pressure rises above 16 to 18 psi.

GENERATOR CONTROL BOX
(POST MOD 6/1651)
Refer to Figure 24-2. DC Generation (Mod 6/1590 or 6/1636).

The latest post mod 6/1651 power distribution and generator control
box (Figure 24-2) now replaces the reverse current circuit breaker
(RCCB) with three 150 amp current limiters. Three additional current
limiters are located at the opposite end of the power supply cables
in the battery bay area. The K1 and K2 reverse current relays that
are installed at each end of the box by mod 6/1591 maintain relay
isolation to ensure an overheat condition of one relay will not effect
the other relay. The left and right 30 and 50 amp circuit breaker
location groups are retained on the circuit breaker panel relating to
the DC bus power supply.
24
MSM Figure 24-1 and Figure 24-2 illustrate the DC generation
system with and without mods 6/1590 and 6/1636.

LEFT GENERATOR RESET

Following engine start, a generator begins output when the generator
switch is positioned to reset and then released to on. The generator
shunt field is excited to increase generator voltage and current output
for system demand. 10 amp circuit breakers labeled gen control L
and gen control R, located on the overhead circuit breaker panel,
protect the field circuits of the starter generators.

System control is achieved by left and right generator control switches

located on the overhead console. A reset position allows a generator, to
be reselected on line. This reset position excites the generator field each
time the generator is selected to reset.

The generator-reset circuit is protected by a 5-amp circuit breaker

labeled gen reset. It is located inside the engine nacelle lower cowling.

LEFT GENERATOR ON
When a generator is selected online using the generator switch, a
voltage is supplied through the gen control R or gen control L circuit
breaker. This control voltage will close the reverse current relay (RCR)
and enable the generator to supply power to the DC bus. When the
generator switch is moved to the off position, the generator field circuit
is interrupted and the RCR will open.

Four (4) conditions must be met before the RCR will close and
connect the generator output to the DC buses:
•• The generator voltage output must be greater than 22 volts.
•• It must be positive (not negative) DC output.
•• The generator voltage must be 0.5 volts higher than the voltage Figure 24-11.  DC Load Meter Panel
present on the battery contact.
24
•• The flow of current must be from the generator to the bus.

If a generator fails to maintain the required voltage output, the RCR

will sense that current has begun to flow in a reverse direction from
the bus to the generator, and will open to prevent the generator from
functioning as a starter motor.

The GENERATOR caution light of the affected generator will turn on

Figure 24-9.  Bus Tie Switch
to provide indication to the pilot that the RCR has opened. Normal shut
down of a generator is made by selecting the generator switch to the off
position. This removes the control voltage from the RCR, and the RCR
opens isolating the generator from the DC bus.

Reverse current relay is used for generator output to power left bus
and battery.

OPERATIONAL CONDITIONS Figure 24-10.  Generator Caution Lights

1. Gen switch from reset to on position
2. K5 L gen contacts closed
3. Control power through gen switch, DC master switch, K5
contacts C1 and C2 to left reverse current relay (RCR)
4. Left RCR main contacts close causing:
a. Gen power to left DC bus
b. Gen power to charge main battery if battery selected on
c. L gen fail relay (PD-K5) energized and L gen fail caution
light turns off.

STATIC INVERTER 400 VA SYSTEM NOTES

(SPECIAL ORDER)
Refer to Figure 24-18. 400VA Inverter System.

The 400VA static inverter system consists of two static inverters

(no.1 and no.2) and a control relay, located on the left side of the
rear fuselage, and a control switch labeled inverter no. 1 and no. 2
located on the overhead console. (If mod 6/1274 or mod SOO 6127
fitted, switch will be located on fuse panel). Each inverter provides
115-volt 400VA, 400 Hz single-phase AC outputs from a 28VDC
input. No. 1 inverter is supplied from battery/external DC bus (post
mod 6/1292 or mod 6/1372 or the left DC bus (post mod 6/1292 or
mod 6/1372) and no.2 inverter from the right DC bus.

For AC instruments and radio circuits, two autotransformers are

fitted to provide 26-volt 400 Hz output.
24
The power supplies to the inverters are protected by 20-amp circuit
breakers located on the overhead circuit breaker panel, and the power
supply to the control relay by a 5-amp circuit breaker located on the
main circuit breaker panel.

OPERATION
With the inverter control switch set on no.1, power from the battery/
external or left DC bus is fed through the normal closed contacts of
the inverter control relay to no.1 inverter. The 115-volt output is then
fed to the aircraft services through the control switch and relevant
fuses. The 26-volt output from the autotransformer is fed to the AC
failure relay K8 (which opens the circuit of the 400 ~ fail caution
light), and through the control switch and relevant fuses. The radio
AC relay connects AC power to the radio system.

OPERATIONAL CONDITIONS
1. No.1 inverter on.

STATIC INVERTERS SOO 6142

The British CAA Series 310 certification by optional mod SOO 6142
required creation of separate left and right 400 cycle buses. Unlike the
standard Twin Otter AC system, both inverters function at all times,
each supplying their own AC buses. The left inverter supplies power
to the left AC bus, powering the pilot’s directional gyro and attitude
indicator, and both engine fuel quantity, fuel flow, oil pressure, and
torque pressure indicators. The right inverter supplies the right AC bus
to power the co-pilot’s directional and attitude indicators. Other avionics
may be added to either bus. There are two inverter control switches, one
for each inverter. These are labeled inverter R bus and L bus, with three
switch positions for each, labeled norm, off, and emer. Both switches
are selected to the norm position for dual operation. Two caution lights
are provided on the annunciator panel, one for each inverter, labeled CO-PILOT PILOT

Should an inverter failure caution light illuminate the switch for

the affected inverter should be selected to the off position. If the
affected 400 CYCLE caution light extinguishes, then the instruments
and services powered from that bus are lost. This condition would
most commonly be caused by a ground fault. Should the 400-cycle
caution remain illuminated after the affected inverter has been
switched to off, the affected inverter switch may be selected to the
emer position. AC power from the remaining opposite side inverter
will be routed to the bus with the failed inverter. The one remaining
inverter will supply all AC services on the aircraft. The 400 CYCLE
caution light for the failed inverter will extinguish when AC supply
is reestablished from the remaining inverter.

INTRODUCTION NOTES

All Twin Otter aircraft are equipped with engine fire detection and
fire extinguishing systems. The two systems operate independently
of each other and are controlled from the flight compartment.

GENERAL
The engine fire detection system provides the means to detect a
fire or overheat condition in either engine nacelle. The system is
automatic and is in operation any time the left DC bus is powered.
The bottle may be discharged by pulling on the appropriate fire pull
handle in the flight compartment, provided DC power is available
on the left bus.

If a short circuit to ground exists on the normally powered side of NOTES

the detector circuit, the affected fire det fault ind circuit breaker will
open due to excessive current. This is a magnetic type switch circuit
breaker, and in addition to interrupting the power to the normally
powered side, it will reroute DC power through the fire det L or fire
det R circuit breaker to the side of the detection circuit which is
normally not powered, while at the same time removing the ground
which is normally provided on that side of the circuit (Figure 26-1.
Sheet 4 of 7) DC power is now available on the opposite (normally
ground) side of the circuit.

OPERATIONAL CONDITIONS
1. Short circuit on normally powered detector circuit.
2. R fire det fault ind magnetic type switch circuit breaker opens.
3. Power (28VDC) is rerouted.

Should an overheat condition develop, the affected detector will NOTES

close, and power will flow onto the side of the circuit which has
the short circuit to ground. When this happens, the fire pull handle
light will turn on, and the bell will ring. Fire detection ability on the
affected circuit is still present.

The system was designed in this manner to allow some degree of

fault tolerance in the detection system. If during preflight inspection
a fire det fault ind circuit breaker is found open, the pilot should test
the system. If the system tests satisfactory, a ground fault exists and
should be repaired before next flight.

OPERATIONAL CONDITIONS
1. Short circuit on normally powered detector circuit.
2. R fire det fault ind magnetic type switch circuit breaker opens.
3. Power (28VDC) is rerouted to second loop.
4. Right engine #1 detector senses temperature over 300°F.

In the event of a ground fault (short circuit) occurring in the loop NOTES
supplied through the magnetic circuit breaker, the circuit breaker will
disengage, the center arm within the breaker moves to disconnect the
ground and provide an alternative power supply to the second loop.

The test switch when selected to test, connects the two thermal-detecting
loops of each engine system in series and completes a circuit through
the warning light to ground, thus allowing the continuity of the loops,

AIRFRAME DEICING SYSTEM

GENERAL
The wing and tail deicing system is electrically controlled and utilizes
bleed air from the engine compressors to actuate rubber boots on the
leading edges of both wings and the horizontal stabilizer. Inflation/
deflation cycles flex both wing boot inner and outer sections and the
left and right horizontal stabilizer boots in sequence to break up ice
formations. Wing inspection lights are available for determining ice
thickness on the wing leading edges during night operations.

WINDSHIELD HEAT
The pilot and co-pilot’s windshield heaters are two separate systems
controlled by one (1) common switch. Each system includes a
controller, a heat sensor, and a control relay. The sensor transmits
temperature signals to the controller which then cycles the system
on and off in a temperature range which will prevent ice formation
(Figure 30-4).

When the switch is selected on, control voltage is directed to the

temperature controllers. If a sensor embedded in the windshield
is below a certain temperature, the temperature controller in the
windscreen heat control box will energize a relay and allow 28
VDC to the heating element in the windshield. The windshield heat
sensor, connected to the temperature controller, maintains the correct
temperature and prevents overheating.

PROPELLER DEICE SYSTEM

OPERATION
Figure 30-8 illustrates the operation of the propeller deice system.

With both engines operating, the PROP DE-ICE circuit breaker

engaged, and the PROP DE-ICE switch selected on, electrical
power is applied to the timer, and the relays are energized. The
timer will direct power through the relays to the propeller brush
blocks and back spin plate for approximately 30 seconds to each
group of heating elements. This results in a sequenced power output
to the inner and outer heating elements of each propeller in turn. If
a propeller is feathered or an engine is shut down, the oil pressure
switch contacts will open due to low or no oil pressure, and the
associated deicing relay is de-energized to open the circuits to the
heating elements of the affected propeller.

When the system is operating, a complete cycle is completed every

2 minutes.

If an engine is shut down in flight, power will not be supplied to that

propeller, however, the timer will still allocate time to that side. The
remaining functioning propeller will receive two 30 second cycles
every 2 minutes.

The sequence is as follows:

•• Right engine outer portion of propeller (Phase 1).

•• Right engine inner portion of propeller (Phase 2). 30
•• Left engine outer portion of the propeller (Phase 3).
•• Left engine inner portion of the propeller (phase 4).

SYSTEM
CONTROLS AND INDICATIONS
Refer to Figure 32-1. Amphibian Landing Gear Selector.

The landing gear handle controls a hydraulic selector valve within the
control unit and has two (2) positions (up and down/land) which give
indication of the gear position selected. From either position, the handle
must be pulled out to clear a detent before it can be repositioned.

INDICATOR LIGHTS
Ten (10) indicator lights are mounted on the landing gear control
unit adjacent to the landing gear handle. Four (4) blue indicator
lights, labeled nose and main (left-hand lights for the left float and
right-hand lights for the right float), show that the landing gear is
up and locked. The four (4) green indicator lights, labeled nose and
main (left-hand lights for the left float and right-hand lights for the
right float), are turned on when the landing gear is down and locked.
There are no lights on when the landing gear is in transit. Two (2)
red indicator lights, labeled pump on 1 and 2 turn on when current
is supplied to the landing gear motors.

LANDING GEAR OPERATION NOTES

Refer to:

•• Figure 32-2. Amphibian Landing Gear Electrical Schematic

- Gear Selected Up (Sheet 1 of 2).
•• Figure 32-2. Amphibian Landing Gear Electrical Schematic
- Gear Selected Down (Sheet 2 of 2).

Landing gear extension and retraction is accomplished by two (2)

electrically-driven hydraulic pumps and four (4) hydraulic actuators
(one (1) for each gear). The hydraulic pumps are located on the
fuselage bulkhead 60.00 and the hydraulic actuators are located
adjacent to each gear. Hydraulic system fluid level should be checked
periodically by viewing the sight glass for fluid level in the upper one-
third of the range. If fluid is low, fill with MIL-H-5606 or equivalent.

Landing gear operation is initiated by movement of the landing gear

handle. When the handle is repositioned, hydraulic pressure in the
system will drop and pressure switches will automatically turn on the
hydraulic pump motors to maintain operating pressure in the system.
When the gear cycle is completed, the pump will automatically shut
off. If the pressure in the system drops to a preset value, the pressure
switches turn the pump motors back on and build up the pressure to
the limit again. Eight (8) position-indicator lights four (4) gear up
and four (4) gear down are provided to show landing gear position.
Two (2) additional indicator lights show when the landing gear pump
motors are operating.

BETA BACKUP SYSTEM

OPERATION
When the pilot twists a power lever grip (an action which is necessary EARLY AIRCRAFT LATER AIRCRAFT
before selecting zero thrust or reverse), a small microswitch in the
area above the power levers detects that a grip has been twisted and
prevents electricity from flowing to the beta backup solenoid. As the
power levers are moved toward reverse, the beta lights will turn on
when the blade angle decreases below +9°, but the beta backup valve
will not function. Figure 61-1 (Sheet 2 of 4) illustrates the electrical
flow in beta backup valve during normal operation.

Operational Conditions
1. Left power lever below flight idle (reverse).
2. Left prop beta switch closed.
3. Left propeller blade angle less than 9°.
4. K3 relay energized and all contacts closed.
•• Left beta light turns on. BETA LIGHTS

If the power lever is forward of idle (not twisted) and the blade
angle decreases to +9° or less, a microswitch will be activated by
the movement of the feedback ring. The beta backup solenoid will
be energized closed, thus cutting off all oil supply to the servo piston
and open again when the propeller blade angle increases sufficiently
to move the feedback ring away from the microswitch. The propeller
will cycle back and forth, on and off the microswitch in the range of
+9° to +11° if the malfunction persists.

Operational Conditions
1. Left power lever at, or above flight idle.
2. Left prop beta switch closed. BETA LIGHTS

BETA BACKUP SYSTEM

OPERATIONAL TEST
The beta range backup system may be tested for each propeller, EARLY AIRCRAFT LATER AIRCRAFT
individually or simultaneously by lifting a two-position spring-loaded
switch on the pilot panel (Figure 61-4). When the engines are running,
holding the test switch up at beta range test and moving aft one or two
power levers aft of idle will cause the appropriate beta range light to
flash on and off as the propeller cycles in the +9° range. In addition, a
light labeled BETA BACKUP DISARMED will also flash on and off.

When the pilot lifts the beta range test switch, electricity supply to the
beta backup valve is maintained, even though the power lever grip has
been twisted and moving aft.

Operational Conditions
1. Left power lever below flight idle (reverse).
2. Left prop beta switch closed.
3. Left prop blade angle less than 9°. BETA LIGHTS

4. K3 relay energized and all contacts closed.

5. Beta range test switch in upward position.

MOD 1470 AUTOFEATHER SYSTEM

OPERATION
Refer to Figure 61-6.  Propeller Autofeather Operation - Mod EARLY AIRCRAFT LATER AIRCRAFT
6/1470 (Sheet 1 of 2).

With the prop autofeather circuit breaker engaged and the prop
autofeather switch selected to on, the green SEL indicator light
comes on. If the two engine power levers are advanced to obtain
86 to 88% gas generator rpm (NG), the two power lever-operated
microswitches operate and electrical supply is provided to both
torque pressure switches. Increasing torque pressure (by 17 psi) in
each engine operates the torque pressure switches to energize the
ARMED light relays K1 (by right torque pressure switch) and K2
(by left torque pressure switch) which cause the amber ARMED
indicator light to come on.

Operational Conditions
1. Autofeather selected on.

MOD 1470 AUTOFEATHER SYSTEM

OPERATION
Refer to Figure 61-6. Propeller Autofeather Operation - Mod 6/1470 EARLY AIRCRAFT LATER AIRCRAFT
(Sheet 2 of 2).

In the event of the torque pressure of one engine fails to below 11 to

13 psi, when the two power levers are set above 86% NG, the torque
pressure switch of that engine closes to complete a circuit to its
respective time delay relay (K4 for the left engine or K3 for the right
engine), which after a delay of approximately two seconds, energizes
the feather solenoid valve of that engine resulting in the propeller
being feathered. The closing of the torque switch also de-energizes one
of the ARMED light relays and the ARMED indicator light goes out.

Operational Conditions
1. Left and right power lever > 86% torque.
2. Right engine torque pressure fails below 11-13 psi.
3. K3 relay energized. BETA LIGHTS

4. Right engine feather solenoid valve energized.

OPERATION NOTES

The start switch held to left or right position. DC power from the
auxiliary battery bus goes through the ignition and start field relays
and through the fuel control lever limit switch. Relay K7 (contacts
B2/B1 close) which is energized through the start switch applying
power to the igniter exciter unit. With K16 relay energized, power
is connected to the APP terminal of the reverse-current relay,
energizing the main relay to connect main battery (or external) power
to the starter-generator (through the start relay).

An automatic fuel purge valve is provided for each engine. When the
relevant engine start circuit is energized, the valve is energized to provide
a means of purging trapped air from the appropriate engine fuel control
unit; the valve is de-energized when the start switch is released.

STARTING LEFT ENGINE WITH

FUEL SELECTOR ON
When the left gas generator is minimum 12% NG, the fuel control
lever is advanced to the on position. This provides fuel for light-up
and the fuel control lever limit switch contacts open. Opening the
limit switch contacts de-energize the generator field relay, which
changes the starter-generator from compound to a series wound for
faster NG acceleration.

OPERATIONAL CONDITION
1. Start switch on left engine.
2. Left fuel lever selected on.
3. Left fuel control lever limit switch contacts open.
4. L gen field relay K5 de-energized.
5. K5 relay contacts open.

STARTING SWITCH RELEASED NOTES

When the start switch is released (at self-sustained engine speed

(48% NG)), power from the auxiliary battery bus is disconnected
from the control circuits (LSR, K9, K16, FUEL BLEED SOL, K7),
thereby de-energizing the control relays and completing the ground
return for the left generator relay (LGR).

OPERATIONAL CONDITIONS
1. Start select switch released to the start position at 48% NG.
2. Left start relay de-energized = contacts open.
3. Relay K9 de-energized = contacts close.
4. Relay K16 de-energized = contacts close.
5. Fuel bleed solenoid de-energized.
6. Relay K7 de-energized = Igniter contacts open and paralleling

COMPONENTS (MOD 6/1329 PROP AUTO FEATHER
PRODUCTION) ON

POWER-LEVER-OPERATED MICROSWITCHES OFF

BETA BACKUP
Two microswitches (Figure 61-3) are installed on a slide assembly in the DISARMED BETA RANGE
cabin roof. A slide, attached to each engine power lever cable, operates
the appropriate microswitch when the power levers are advanced. Both L R
microswitches are electronically connected in series.

BLOCKING RELAYS EARLY AIRCRAFT

Two blocking relays, one connected in parallel with each engine AUTOFEATHER
solenoid valve, are installed in an autofeather relay box in the LIGHTS
cabin roof. When one relay is energized, its contacts disconnect the
electrical supply to the opposite engine low-pressure torque switch
and the autofeather ARM light.

TORQUE PRESSURE SWITCH

A single-pole, low-pressure torque switch is installed on each engine
torque transmitter. The switches complete an electrical circuit to the
appropriate engine feather solenoid valve if the torque pressure of
that engine falls below 11 to 13 psi.

FEATHERING SOLENOID VALVE

A solenoid-operated valve is installed on each engine overspeed LATER AIRCRAFT
governor. When operated electrically, the valve opens to allow oil
pressure, acting on the pitch-change mechanism of the propeller Figure 61D-11.  Beta System Lights and Test Switch
installed on the engine, to be relieved, causing the propeller to feather.

ARMING LOCK-ON RELAY

Aircraft with Mod 6/1329 installed have an arming lock-on relay
the autofeather relay box. The relay is energized when both torque
pressure switches operates above 17 psi torque pressure and is locked
on to arm the autofeather circuit by the actuation of both power lever
microswitches.

COMPONENTS
Torque Pressure Switch
A single-pole, low-pressure torque switch is installed on each engine
torque transmitter. The switches complete an electrical circuit to the
appropriate engine feather solenoid valve if the torque pressure of that
engine falls below 11 to 13 psi. The switch also controls autofeather
arming when it operates on rising torque pressure at 17 psi.

Low Torque Pressure Relays

These relays initiate the autofeather sequence.

Torque Pressure Relay

Is part of the arming circuit for the autofeather system.
