1. Introduction
1.1 Principle of the JLN-550 Doppler Sonar
This product transmits ultrasound waves obliquely into the sea water and receives the water echo
reflections from the plankton and other suspended solids in the water and the ground echo reflections
from the seabed.
V: Ship's speed

θ: Angle of dip

Water echo reflections Plankton and suspended solids

Ground echo reflections Seabed

The signal receiving frequency, "f1", is determined by the amount of doppler shifting of the
transmitting frequency, "f0", according to the particular speed of the ship.

2 × f 0 × V × cos θ
f1 = f 0 + C: Sound velocity (1,500 m/S)
C

The ship's speed, V, can therefore be inversely calculated by measuring the receiving frequency, "f1".

1.2 Ground Speed of the Ship

The ground reflection signal is used for measuring the ground speed.
During actual operation, ultrasound beams are emitted in four directions with an offset of 45
degrees from the bow.
As shown in the diagram below, four channel numbers are defined as c to f for convenience's
sake.

e 45° c

Angle of dip
60°

d f

The water depth and the ground speed of the ship (BT) are computed from the received signals of
the seabed reflections in the four directions.

1. Introduction 1
1.3 Water Speed of the Ship
The water reflection signal is used for measuring the speed through the water.
During actual operation, ultrasound beams are emitted in two directions on the line from the bow
to the stern.
As shown in the diagram below, two channel numbers are defined as g and h for convenience's
sake.

Angle of dip
75°

The water speed of the ship (WT) is computed from the received signals of the log reflections in
the two directions.

1.4 GPS-Based Speed of the Ship

The fore/aft speed and port/starboard speed of the ship can be calculated by entering the course
and ship's speed indicated by the GPS, and the bow heading indicated by the gyro.

1.5 ROT-Based 3-Axial Display of the Ship's Speed
The 3-axial port/starboard speed of the ship can be calculated from the previously specified
installation positions of the transducer and the GPS antenna and the desired BOW and STERN
display positions by entering the ROT-based angular velocity.

Set four points (TD, TG, DB, and DS) at any positions on an extension line from point FP.
When the ship's speed, BT, is valid, the 3-axial port/starboard speed of the ship will be computed.
In GPS display mode, the GPS-based 3-axial port/starboard speed of the ship can also be
displayed.
(There is no need to set the position of ROT.)

3. Installation 7
3.2 Mounting the Transducer

Mounting Location
The ultra sound waves that are used to measure ship speed can not make
correct measurements if air bubbles are present effecting the transfer of
sound waves. It is necessary to avoid the source of bubbles and the
stream of bubbles when selecting a position to mount the transducer.
We recommend consulting with the manufacturers of the boat, as information
about the actual situation for boats with a similar hull structure is important
when selecting a position to mount the device.
Refer to the following basic explanation about bubbles.

1. Conditions of the source and flow of bubbles

Fig 3-5 shows a conceptual drawing of the condition of the source and flow
of bubbles near the hull, however there are complex differences due to such
conditions as the hull shape, ship speed and draft.

Side view

Bottom view

Cross section of hull

Fig. 3-5

2. Relation between hull shape and bubbles

The following is a representational example of the conditions of the source
and flow of bubbles along the bottom of a boat, such conditions as the hull shape,
ship speed and draft create various characteristics.
2.1 For hulls that have a deep draft
There is a small amount of bubbles along the bottom of a boat with a deep
draft, which allows a wide tolerance for a transducer mounting position.

Water line

Deep daft

Fig. 3-6

8 3. Installation
2.2 For high-speed hulls with a cut-away stern
Boats with a cut-away stern for high speeds, and high horsepower
forward-mounted engines, have increased propeller noise due to high RPM,
which tends to distribute bubbles toward the center of the hull. This allows
only a narrow tolerance for the transducer mounting position.
Engine

Fig. 3-7

2.3 For hulls that are broad of beam in the bow or amidships
Due to poor lateral dispersion of bubbles along the bottom of the boat, the
thickness of bubbles may reach or exceed 200 mm (100 to 150 mm is
considered normal for other hulls). Therefore, it is often necessary to
increase the extension from the hull more than is usual.

Cross section of hull

Narrow beam hull

Broad beam hull

Fig. 3-8

2.4 For hulls that have a ball type bow keel

For this kind of high-speed hull design, bubbles are distributed widely
along the bow and amidships of the hull. While it looks like a ball shape,
that is not always the case, it needs to be checked, and if so the tolerance
for the transducer mounting position increases.

This area produces

few bubbles.

Fig. 3-9

3. Installation 9
2.5 For hulls that have narrowed bow or stern outboard
For high-speed FRP boats, the engine horsepower has been increased to
increase the speed, the following cautions should be taken.
a) There is a large flow of bubbles along the bottom of the boat due
to the shape of the keel, and the shape of the bow.
b) For many boats that have a cut-away stern the engine has been
moved forward, which increases the noise from the propeller.
c) If the engine is oversized for the hull, the high RPM
(2000 to 3000 rpm) increase the vibration noise in the hull.

For these reasons the correct placement of the transducer on this

type of hull is extremely difficult, refer to the mounting position on
boats in which the operation of the transducer is good for particularly
for the same hull shape and the same area.

6.2 Checking Noise Level
Once take out the fuse F400 from the CMN-633 (2M_TRX_UNIT) and
disconnect the connector J2 from the CDC-1189 (Main Board) to de-energize
the transmitter. Then, measure the noise level in the receiver.

Checking Noise Level at BT

Connect an oscilloscope to the test point TP303-1 (EV1) of the CMA-832
(240k_RX_UNIT) to check the waveform. It has in usual, a noise of less than
0.75VDC.
Trigger signal is the test point TP8 (TXG1) of the CDC-1189 (MAIN BOARD).
If this waveform is pulsating, it may involve much external noise. Recheck all
connections and shields.
Similarly, check the waveform to the test point TP303-2 (EV2), TP303-3 (EV3)
and TP303-4 (EV4).

6. Installation Checking 27
6.3 System Check by Dummy Signal
Dummy signals are available to facilitate the confirmation of
signals to external equipment.
This function generates dummy output of the ship's speed, it be
both water speed and ground speed, the water depth, the total
distance, and sectional distances.
Check the external equipment to receive data correctly.
Once the system has entered this menu mode (M7oo), transmission
from the signal processor will also be stopped.
Default value on dummy signals as:
Water Speed: fore 18.00 kts
Ground Speed: fore 18.00 kts,
Bow-port 1.80kts, Stern-stb. 1.80kts
Note: During the display of the total distance and sectional
distances, a dummy output water speed of 18 kts is added to the
current value and saved.

6.4 Remarks on Master Reset: menu mode (M600)

If necessary, use this function to master reset the settings to their
initial state.
When this function is performed, the defaults will be valid for
both the SIGNAL DISTRIBUTOR and the SIGNAL PROCESSOR.

28 6. Installation Checking
7. Speed test
After installation, the indicated speed must be calibrated in comparison with
corresponding true speed to make the best use of the excellent features of this
Doppler Sonar and effectively utilize it.
For the speed calibration, in usual, the ship is run between Mile Post to obtain a
calibrated value from the turnaround time. Measured values in this time must be
accurately recorded on a Doppler Sonar speed test sheet and it must be stored.
If the equipment faults some other day and the circuit board are replaced, this
record will serve for accurate adjustment.

7.1 Mile Post Running Test

Before running between the Mile Post, the ship must be provisionally run enough to
reduce the speed variation during passing between the posts, as possible. In addition
the ship must be also sailed correctly in directions indicated by the Mile Post. When
the effects of both ocean current and wind can be regarded to be constant in time
during test, the ship may go and return once for measurement. When these effects
are, however, considered to very in time, it preferably goes and returns two times. If
the difference between measured values in the same direction exceeds 0.5 knot, the
measurement must be repeated.
7.1.1
For the Mile Post running test, the ship usually goes and returns four times at 1/4,
2/4, 3/4 and 4/4 of the main engine’s rating.
7.1.2
The rotation frequency of the propellers and course should be made constant at a
point, at least, one nautical mile away from the first Mile Post, before entering the
test area, and kept constant until the test ends.
7.1.3
The instant ship passes by Point A of Figure 7.1, depress both a stopwatch 1 and
reset button of the Main Display of this equipment.
7.1.4
The instant the distance counter indicates a reading of 0.01 NM, depress another
stopwatch 2.
7.1.5
The instant the ship passes by point B, again depress the stopwatch 1 to find a time
t1 required for running between the two points, the Mile Post.
7.1.6
The instant the distance counter indicates a value of 1.01 NM, depress the
stopwatch 2 to obtain a time t2 required for running 1.00 NM of the Doppler Sonar.
Note: Steps 7.1.5 and 7.1.6 may be reversed in time.

7. Speed Test 29
7.1.7
Calculate the true and log speeds from above measured times, according to the
following equations.

3600
True speed = a ( knots )
t1

3600
Log speed = 1 ( knots )
t2

Where, a: Distance between the Mile Post in nautical mile.

t: Required time in second.

7.1.8
Run the ship over a different zone of the test area of sea in every measurement.
When entering a return zone after passing a go-zone, the ship should go a long way
round so as to keep the speed and course constant.
Measure in the same manner as on the go-zone.
