DAY 1

A. Review of Previous lesson or Presenting of New Lesson

Hi! It’s great to see you. Last week you learned about the final letter
of CVC words.
This week, you will learn to identify the medial letter of words with Consonant-
Vowel-Consonant (CVC)patterns.

1
Before you begin with the new lesson, you have to review the previous lesson on
identifying ending/final letters of words by answering the given activity.

A. Look at the picture below. Write the final letter of each word. Write your answer
on a piece of paper or in your notebook.

1. ca___ 6. pi ___

2. ba___ 7. co___

3. be___ 8. bu___

4. fo___ 9. he___

5. na___ 10. we___

⮚ That’s a great job!

Now, Look at the following pictures. Name each picture, orally?

_______ ______ ________ _________ _________

✔ If you answered cat, net, pin, box, and tub, you are correct.
● Now, read the formed words.
● Take a look at the middle letter or the letter at the center of each word.
● What have you noticed with the middle letter of the words?

✔ The middle letters in each word are a, e, i, o, and u. These letters are
called vowels and they have short sounds.
● What do you call these letters again?

B. Establishing a Purpose for the Lesson

⮚ For this week’s lesson, you will learn to:

o identify the medial (vowel) letter of a word;
o write the correct medial letters of words;
o recognize rhyming words;
o distinguish rhyming words from non-rhyming words; and
o supply words that rhyme with the given words.

2. What do the shop have?
3. Who likes to have pup?

5. Why did mom refuse to get a pup?
D. Discussing New Concepts

● Read the following words from the story: cat, pet, kid, job, pup
● Read the words again.
● Look at the medial letter of each word.
✔ All of these words have medial vowel letters a, e, i, o, and u.
Remember this!
● Medial letter is one that is found in the middle of a larger unit
(like a word). It is a segment located between the onset and
the first letter of the rime.
● Remember:
Onset is the initial sound or letter while rime is the ending sound
of a word)
Example 1:
cat = /c/ +/a/+ /t/
final or ending sound rime
middle or medial sound
onset or initial sound
- In the word cat, letter Aa is the middle letter with the sound /a/.

Example 2:
pet = /p/+ /e/+/t/

3
medial sound is /e/ - which is the sound of letter E.

- Now, do the same with the remaining words.

- Read another set of words and identify the medial sound of each word and its
corresponding letter name.
● mat, tag, keg, ten, bin, kit, log, mop, hut, bun.
✔ The medial letters of the words are vowels a, e, I, o and u.
- Here are some more examples for you to read and study.

CVC words with medial vowel letters

learn many things around you if you know how to read.
● All words are made up of letters.
● Being able to identify the medial sound and letter of a word helps you read words
easily and confidently.
● A lot of words have medial vowel letters or sounds.
● You have to master these medial vowel sounds and letters to be
able to read words and understand their meanings.
Example: “pot”

The word pot may also mean a container for cooking.

● There are also many words that rhyme,
