THE THIRD CONDITIONAL

First, read the conversation


THE MISSED CALL
-        Why didn’t you return my call last night?           
-        I would have returned your call last night if I hadn’t been asleep.
-        Why did you go to bed so early?
-        I wouldn’t have gone to bed so early if I hadn’t been tired.
-        What did you do to be tired?
-        I wouldn’t have been tired if I hadn’t studied so much.
-        Wow, why did you study so much?
-        I wouldn’t have studied so much if I hadn’t had an exam after 2 days.
Now, answer these questions:
1.Did they return the call? YES/NO
2. Were they asleep when the friend called?
3.Did they go to bed early or late?
4. Were they tired before they went to sleep?
5. Did they study a lot?
6. Did they have an exam?
7. Did they want to return the call? How do they feel about it?
8. Is their conversation about the present or past?
Now look at the sentences and write the form below each one. Pay attention to the
punctuation:
-        If you had called me earlier, I would have answered you.

- I would have answered you if you had called me earlier.

Third conditional grammar form rules:
If + past perfect ..., would + have + past participle.
If you had called me earlier, I would have answered you.
…would + have + past participle… if + past perfect .

There is one mistake in each sentence. Underline it and correct it.


Example:
If you had helped me, we would finish in time. would have finished
1.I couldn't stay with you. I wouldn't have left if I didn't have the appointment.

2.My sister didn't want to marry Jim. If he had proposed to her, she would refuse. ____would

in the garden if it didn't rain cats and dogs. ____hadn’t rained____________
8.I didn't know that he was at home. I would drop in if I had known it. _would have

9.They wouldn't have travelled by ship if the authorities didn't close the airport
on the island. ____hadn’t closed____________
10.She was so pretty. If I were twenty years younger, I would have asked her
to marry me. ___had been_____________
Rewrite the sentences and use the third conditional. Keep the same meaning.
Example
My car was out of order. I did not drive her there.
If my car had not been out of order, I would have driven her there.

1.She did not give me her phone number. I could not call her.
If she ....had given... me her phone number, I could have called her.
2.He was at work. He could not go with us.
If he had not been at work, he ....could have gone........ with us.
3.My dad did not buy any sugar. My mum did not make any cake.
If my dad .....had bought.... some sugar, my mum would have made some cake.
4.I travelled round the world because I had won the lottery.
I wouldn't have travelled round the world if I .....hadn’t won.... the lottery.
5.We did not have enough money. We could not afford to eat in restaurants.
If we ....had had...... enough money, we could have afforded to eat in restaurants.
6.You were not prepared. You could not pass the exam.
If you had been prepared, you ....could have passed.. the exam.
7.I came back home late because I had worked long hours.
I would not have come back home late if I ....hadn’t worked.... long hours.
8.I was so young. I had no experience.
If I .....hadn’t been.... so young, I would have had some experience.
9.They did not go on holiday. They did not have any rest.
If they had gone on holiday, they ...would have had..... some rest.
10.You did not know what to do because you had not listened to me.
You would have known what to do if you ....had listened... to me.
Read Jill's letter and complete her mother's reply. Use the third conditional forms.

Example:
Dear Mum,
Last week I went to the disco where I met a wonderful boy. He asked me for the dance. He
held me tight. After the dance he walked me home and he kissed me. I fell in love with him
and I invited him to my birthday party. He didn't come. I felt miserable. I had a large glass of
whisky and decided to go to his place. I drove my car, but a traffic warden stopped me. I
failed a breathalyzer test and lost my driving license.

If you had not gone to the disco, you would not have met the wonderful boy.
And if he __hadn’t asked__ you for the dance, he __wouldn’t have held____

To not confuse Type 2 with Type 3 conditional sentences:


My car is out of order. I can't drive you there.

If my car wasn't out of order, I would drive you there.

1. Is the sentence in bold above type 2 or type 3? TYPE TWO


2. Do type two sentences talk about:
A. Alternatives for past actions
B. Alternatives for present or future actions
Use the second and third conditionals to respond to the following situations:
I don't know his address. I can't contact him.
But if I __had known_ his address, I __would have contacted__ him.
He was ill. He couldn't go skiing.
But if he __hadn’t been__ ill, he __would have gone__skiing.
He didn't buy any tomatoes. I couldn't make a salad.
But if he _had bought_ some tomatoes, I _would have made__ a salad.
We haven't enough room in our house. You can't stay with us.
But if we _had had__ enough room, you __could have stayed__with us.
You were not lucky. You didn't win.
But if you _had been_ lucky, you _would have won__.
I am eighteen. I can vote.
But if I _hadn’t been__ eighteen, I _couldn’t have voted_ .
