AUTO PILOT - Controlling - Modify Auto Pilot Controller Assembly.

NOTE

This Service Bulletin must be accomplished


in conjunction with Sperry Service Bulletin
No. TA-693-37.

1. Planning Information:

A. Effectivity:

This Service Bulletin affects the following operators:

This modification will be incorporated, prior to delivery, on all


applicable DC-9 series aircraft. (Fuselage Nos. 48, 90 and subsequent.)

B. Reason:

To improve auto pilot servo disengagement capability when using the


control wheel disengaqe switches.

C. Description:

This modification accomplishes the following:

(1) Removes the auto pilot controller.

(2) Reworks, tests, and reidentifies controller per Sperry Service


Bulletin No.TA-693-37.

(3) Installs reworked controller and performs functional test.

D. Compliance:

Although the work outlined herein does not affect the immediate safety of
the aircraft, the Douglas Aircraft Company considers it highly desirable
and should be accomplished at the earliest practicable date.

E. Approval:

This Service Bulletin is FAA approved.

F. Manpower:

This modification may be accomplished in approximately 1/2 man-hour or


1/2 elapsed hour per aircraft.

NOTE: Man-hours do not include time for rework required by Sperry


Service Bulletin No. TA-693-37.

G. Material - Cost and Availability:

(1) Aircraft:

Cost and availability of parts required to accomplish this modification


are to be negotiated between the operator and Sperry Phoenix
Company.

(2) Spares:

2. Accomplishment Instructions:

NOTE: Chapters within parentheses refer to sections of the


Maintenance Manual.

CAUTION: STATICALLY GROUND THE AIRCRAFT. OBSERVE ALL


PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES WHILE PERFORMING THIS
MODIFICATION. (SEE CHAPTER 22-10-2.)

A. Remove and retain auto pilot controller. (See Chapter 22-10-2.)

B. Rework, test, and reidentify auto pilot controller per Sperry Service
Bulletin No. TA-693-37.

C. Install auto pilot controller and perform functional check. (See


Chapter 22-10-2.)
