1. The VRS 002 (Vessel Remote Server) and PoE injector installed in the FX Rack
The VRS 002 is connected to the FX Rack and will send data reports using SFTP protocol to an
onshore server at fixed intervals. The VRS 002 is connected to the FX Rack on PORT 7 on the
CISCO Router. This port has been pre-configured to communicate using DHCP with the VRS 002
LAN port 5.
The VRS 002 is delivered pre-configured from Danelec Marine and only a few parameters need to
be configured by the technician during the installation.
The VRS 002 is connected via LAN connection (with PoE) to the RDI box installed at the vessels
VDR location.
The RDI box contains 2 modules. A serial junction box module (RDI 01-008SJ) and an analog
module RDI 01-008A. The serial module is designed to be inserted on the serial lines going to the
VDR. The Analog module is used when the RPM signal at the VDR only is available as an analog
signal.
3 Pre-Installation
3.1 Vessel preparation:
Before the installation of the FleetData components the vessel should already have prepared the
following:
- A CAT5 STP cable between VDR location (where RDI box is going to be installed) and FX
Rack with enough cable in each end for good cable management and termination.
- A mounting bracket or similar if needed at the location of the VDR where the RDI box is
going to be installed.
Before boarding the vessel ensure you have the latest version of the following:
5.1 Pre-Checks
- A CAT5 Patch cable is connected between VRS 002 LAN port 5 and CISCO 891-24X port
7
- A CAT5 Patch cable is connected between the VRS 002 LAN port 2 and the LAN port on
the PoE module
- 24VDC is present on the VRS002 WAGO plug and LEDs on the connected LAN ports
indicates link and traffic (blinking)
- Ensure a good connection of the cable shield by firmly securing the cable using the supplied
cable strain relief
Final connection:
- Connect you Laptop to LAN port 1 on the VRS 002 and login as described in Appendix 1:
Connecting to the VRS 002 + DFS and Restore.
- Check the VRS 002 firmware version. It must be version 3.45 of higher. If the software
version is lower than 3.45, upgrade the software as described in Appendix 4: How to
update the VRS 002 Firmware
- Ensure the VRS 002 is set to “Mini VDR” mode in Main menuSystemModules
- Make sure Data Collection is set to “On” and click “Save” before exiting the menu.
- Cycle power to the VRS 002 to ensure the changes take effect.
Perform a test to check that the outbound connection to the shore server can be established.
If the test is successful, the VRS 002 installation in the FX rack is completed.
If the test is failed it indicates a connection issue which could be cause by the following:
Firmware problem
Make sure the firmware version is 3.45 or higher. If lower, it must be upgraded to at least 3.45
Cable problem
Check connection between VRS002 and Cisco Router:
- Is the Ethernet cable well connected to LAN port 5 on the VRS 002?
- Is the Ethernet cable well connected to LAN port 7 on the Cisco router?
- Is the “Link” and “Data” LEDs on both VRS 002 and Cisco router on and blinking?
IMPORTANT
The cardboard box containing the RDI unit also contains 2 plastic bags with
installation material (wire clamps, screws and WAGO connector). Take great care not
to misplace these.
The installation material is located in the top of the cardboard box with the RDI unit
located a level below.
Open the cardboard box from the topside (clearly marked with a green “Open Here”
label) to avoid overlooking the installation material.
6.2 Pre-checks
- Check that the RDI 01-008SJ and RDI 01-008A modules are well installed in the box
- Check that the pre-mounted cables between the 2 modules are correctly installed
- Check that the installation location is suitable and makes connection to the serial signals
possible without too much cable work
- Remove shield
- Mount ferrules on all wires. Note that Brown and Blue pairs must be mounted with both
wires in one ferrule
- Connect the 2-pole grey WAGO plug to the Brown and Blue pair and connect to the RDI
08-001A “12-30VDC” port:
Connector 2 Pole Grey WAGO (For RDI 08-001A)
Signal Position Color
V+ 1 Brown/Brown-White
0 2 Blue/Blue-White
- Unplug the 6-pole orange WAGO plug from the RDI 08-001SJ Ethernet connector and
connect Green and Orange pair according to below table:
Connector 6 Pole Orange WAGO (For RDI08-001SJ)
Signal Position Color Note
Tx+ 1 Green/White
Tx- 2 Green
Rx+ 3 Orange/White
Rx- 4 Orange
G 5 Black Pre-installed
V+ 6 Red Pre-installed
IMPORTANT
The Grey power plug must be connected to the RDI 08-001A module and not the RDI 08-001SJ
module.
- Go to “Main menuStatusDashboard”
- Check that the RDI#1 indicates some data is being received and is green
- Check that the data is being received on Serial input SI00 and that the data is a PDANA
string (ex. $PDANA,01,,8,0000,0000,0000,0000,0000,0000,0000,0000*45)
6.5 Troubleshooting
If VRS 002 is unable to detect the RDI 08-001SJ check the following:
- Is the Power LED on RDI 08-001SJ on? If not check cables and connections
- Is the Link LED on the RDI 08-001SJ on with occasional blinking? If not check cables and
connections
- Check the configuration of the RDI 01-008SJ (see Appendix 2: How to connect and
configure the RDI 08-001SJ)
- Is the Power Plug (Grey 2 pole WAGO) connected to the RDI 08-001A power port?
- Is the Power LED on RDI 08-001A on? If not check cables and connections
- Is the Tx LED on the RDI 08-001A Blinking? If not, check and re-install the configuration
of the RDI 08-001A (See
- Is the SI00 LED on the RDI 08-001SJ blinking? If not, then Baud rate setting on channel
SI00 in the RDI 08-001SJ may be wrong. Check that it is set to 9600.
- Check if the serial signal wires on SI00 on the RDI 08-001A are swapped. TxA on RDI 08-
001A must be connected to SI00 A and TxB and TxB on to SI00 B.
Before starting to connect the signals to the RDIs make a thorough investigation of the signals
available. Use a serial interface with test probes and a serial terminal program on the Laptop. Test
each serial input on the VDR and make a record of what data is present. Ensure that cables are
labelled with the sensor type.
In general look for the GLL and GGA sentences with RMC as a third alternative (all contains
position data).
Look for DPT from echosounder and alternatively DBT. Always connect to Echosounder signal
even if DPT is available from Speed log. Only if no echosounder signal is available can depth from
speed log be used.
7.5 Anemometer
The Anemometer signal is usually an MWV sentences containing relative wind. However, in some
cases (typically with an integrated bridge) only a “True” wind signal is received. Baud rate is
usually 4800
On some systems RPM data is only send at a very low rate (once per minute, or even once per 5
minutes), so patience is required to locate the signal. Furthermore, some systems do not send any
RPM data when the engine is of. Therefore, care should be taken to locate the correct signal
containing RPM data. It may be necessary to study VDR installation drawings etc. to find the
signal. The Baud rate is usually 4800 but 9600 or other baud rates may occur.
Notice that the XDR sentence is a multipurpose sentence which is used by a lot of different
equipment. An RPM signal will typically have a type “T” (for Tachometer) signal indicator, and
unit “R” (for Revolution per minute) indicator. However, signal type may sometimes be type “G”
for Generic and unit could be “P” for Percentage or undefined.
RPM data may be connected to the VDR using an analog signal. The signal may either be a current
signal (4-20mA) or a voltage signal (0-5V, +/-5V, 0-10V, +/-10V). Typically, engine data will be a
4-20mA current signal.
1. Moving existing cable from VDR to RDI 08-001SJ and install new cable (preferred)
2. Connecting parallel in VDR
The method selected depends on the VDR type and mounting as well as the existing cable
arrangement. Method 1 is preferred with method 2 as an option.
8.2.1 Moving existing cable from VDR to RDI 08-001SJ and install new cable
Start by checking and marking each serial connection in the VDR that needs to be connected to the
RDI 08-001SJ. Then disconnect the cables from the VDR and reconnect it in the correct serial input
on the RDI 08-001SJ. Prepare and lay a new cable from the RDI 08-001SJ to the correct input on
the VDR.
Be very careful to ensure that the cable is correctly connected in the VDR and wires are not
swapped as this will result in data not being received by the VDR.
The VDR may give alarm when the cables are removed from the terminals due to serial timeout.
This alarm can be acknowledged on the VDR alarm panel and should disappear when cables have
been re-connected in both RDI 08-001SJ and VDR
All connections in the RDI 08-001SJ and VDR must be made using good quality cable ferrules (see
8.2.4)
This is an alternative method to install the RDI box if the preferred method is not possible due to
the nature/quality of the existing cables to the VDR.
Prepare a new cable for each serial signal which must be connected in the RDI 08-001SJ. Connect
the cable in parallel with the existing serial signal cable in the VDRs serial terminals. Arrange cable
to the RDI 08-001SJ and connect to the correct serial input.
All connections in the RDI 08-001SJ must be made using good quality cable ferrules. All parallel
connections in the VDR must be made using good quality “Dual Entry” ferrules. Original wires
must be crimped together with the new wires in the duel entry ferrule so only one connection is
made in the VDR terminal (see 8.2.4).
It is very important that the shield of the signal cables is not broken, therefore great care must be
taken to ensure that the shields are correctly connected.
When connecting the RDI 08-001SJ in the preferred way (as described in 8.2.1) ensure that the
cable shield on the original cable is connected to the shield of the new cable (from RDI 08-001SJ to
VDR). At the same time the shields may not under any circumstances touch the RDI 08-001SJ
housing as this may introduce noise on the signal.
Secure both cables next to each other on the RDI box cable support using the supplied brackets.
Ensure the shield is not touching the RDI box. Use a tie wrap to connect shields of both cables ends
together.
When connecting the RDI 08-001SJ parallel in the VDR (as described in 8.2.2) then the shield of
the cable going from VDR to RDI 08-001SJ should be connected to the VDR shielding point and
left unconnected at the RDI 08-001SJ end.
Always use good quality cable ferrules with the correct size for the cable. All terminations in RDI
box and VDR must be done with ferrules, even if the original VDR connection was done without
ferrules.
When connecting two wires into one terminal (connecting a cable in parallel in the VDR) dual entry
ferrules must be used.
When installing a new cable from RDI 08-001SJ to the VDR (method 2) always use a good quality
cable with the same wire gauge as the original cable. The cable should also have the same numbers
wire pairs as the original cable.
When connecting in parallel in the VDR (method 3), the cable from the VDR to the RDI box may
be singe pair cable or multi pair cable, but the wires gauge should be the same as the original cable
installed in the VDR, to ensure a good crimping connection when using the dual entry ferrule.
A 4-20mA current signal can be connected in either serial or parallel. Parallel coupling is the
preferred method (See 8.2.4 for correct cable termination).
In parallel coupling the RDI 08-001A will not be connected directly to the 4-20mA current. Instead
the voltage generated over the resistor in the VDR is picked up using a high impedance voltage
input on the RDI 08-001A. The voltage at the VDR will usually be between 1V (4mA) to 5V
(20mA) but may be higher. Therefore, connect the signal to AN02 on the RDI 08-001A which is
preconfigured for 0-10V signal with a high impedance.
Connection at VDR must be made using dual entry ferrules (see 8.2.4)
Note: When connecting a 4-20mA signal it is very important to ensure the polarity is correctly
connected at RDI 08-001A, else not data will be available. Check the PDANA string in the VRS
002. If the reading is 0 then the signal is polarized incorrectly.
In serial coupling, the 4-20mA current is routed through an internal low impedance resistor
(249Ohm) in the RDI 08-001A as well as the resistor in the VDR. Due to the 2 resistors, serial
coupling will only work if the current source has enough power to drive 20mA through both
resistors. For this reason, serial coupling should only be used as an alternative if parallel coupling is
not possible.
Note: When connecting a 4-20mA signal it is very important to ensure the polarity is correctly
connected, else no data will be available. Check the PDANA string in the VRS 002. If the reading is
0 then the signal is polarized incorrectly.
Before connecting a voltage signal to the RDI 08-001A it must be checked if the signal is a unipolar
(0 +) or bipolar (+/-) type and the voltage range. If there is doubt always connect the signal to
AN02 or AN03 which are pre-configured for a bipolar voltage range of +/-10V. If the signal voltage
range is known select a pre-configure channel that suits the signal the best.
Connection at VDR must be made using dual entry ferrules (see 8.2.4)
10 Data verification
When signals have been connected to the RDI 08-001SJ (and RDI 08-001A if applicable) it must be
verified that the data is correctly received by the VRS 002. To do this login to the VRS 002 and go
to “Main menuStatusMini VDR”. Here all serial data channels can be monitored. Click on the
“eye” icon to see more data from a specific channel.
When monitoring the data check that the required NMEA data is present.
If an analog signal is connected to the RDI 08-001A check that the analog data string (PDANA) on
channel SI00 contains some data on the connected input channel:
If the signal is a 4-20mA signal, then there must always be some value higher than 0. If value is
constant 0 check if the signal is polarized opposite etc.
Voltage signal may have a voltage of 0, however the converted value will usually vary slightly
around 0, therefore, a steady 0 value reading is typically an indication that something is wrong with
the signal.
Before installation, the VDR status (if any error exists etc.) should be thoroughly documented so it
can be demonstrated after the installation that new errors has not been introduced.
As per standard, all VDR must be checked after any service on connected sensors and their
connection to the VDR. Most VDRs will have a tool or guide on how to do this which can be found
in the VDR user manuals. Follows the user manual for the VDR after the installation to verify that it
is working and recording correctly.
