1.0 Description

The Inlet Guide Vane (IGV) Actuator is used for inlet guide vane (IGV) positioning and
control on GE gas turbine engines. The actuator base is bolted to the turbine base and
attached to the IGV control ring by means of a linkage with spherical rod end bearings.

The actuator consists of a double acting hydraulic cylinder controlled by an

electrohydraulic servo valve. Two LVDT’s are used for position feedback.

The actuator is to be used only as outlined in GE specification 381A6131 or 395A3681.

Other uses outside of this scope may result in damage, injury, or death.

2.0 Operation

The actuator incorporates a hydraulic trip mechanism. The trip mechanism consists of
a two-position directional control spool valve in series between the servo valve and the
hydraulic cylinder. The porting of the directional control valve is such that, in the trip
position, the servo valve is isolated from the cylinder and hydraulic fluid is directed to
retract the actuator, closing the IGV. The directional control valve connects the servo
valve ports to the cylinder ports, in the run position.

The servo valve accepts a milliamp signal from the controller and directs flow to the
hydraulic cylinder. The servo valve requires a 0 to 8 mA signal, with the polarity shown
in Figure 5, to extend the actuator. The servo valve requires a 0 to -8 mA signal to
retract the actuator. The servo valve is designed with a null bias on the second stage
such that upon the loss of electrical power to the servo valve, the actuator will fully
retract.

The actuator utilizes two LVDT’s to provide position feedback to the controller. They
are used to monitor actuator position. The approximate LVDT output voltage, with an
input voltage of 7.0 Vrms 3 kHz, will be 0.70 Vrms with the actuator in the fully retracted
position or IGV closed. The approximate output voltage in the fully extended position,
or IGV open, will be 2.85 Vrms.

The actuator is to be installed in an area where explosive atmospheres caused by

gases, vapors, or mists are unlikely to occur, or, if they do occur, are likely to do so only
infrequently and only for a short period of time. The environment is to be classified as
Zone 2 per Directive 1999/92/EC. The actuator is classified as belonging to Equipment
Group II, Category 3 per the ATEX Directive 94/9/EC. Refer to Section 6.0 for warnings
regarding explosive atmospheres.

5.0 Lifting

The actuator weighs approximately 280 kg. Hoist rings are recommended for lifting the
actuator. The attachment points for the hoist rings are shown in Figure 1. The hoist
rings must have a 3/8-16 UNC Thread with a length of 14 to 22 mm (.56 to .88 inch) and
a load capacity of 350 kg minimum.
