Let Us Study

Earth’s Rotation and Revolution

We see the Sun appear to rise and move across the sky every day. But the
Sun does not really move; it only seems to move!

The Earth is the third planet from the Sun. Like other planets in the solar
system, the Earth moves in two different ways: rotation and revolution.

Earth The Earth tilts on its axis at an

North Pole angle of 23 ½ degrees. The axis is
the imaginary line through the
earth that extends from the North
Day
Pole to South Pole. As Earth rotates
from west to east and appears to
rotate counter-clockwise. The tilt of
Night Earth’s axis makes day and night.
South Pole Lagbao2020

Earth is always moving. The spinning

of the earth is called rotation. It takes
the earth 24 hours, or one day to make
one complete rotation. At the same
time, the earth moving around the sun
is called revolution. The Earth revolves orbit
Lagbao2020
around the sun in 365 ¼ days, or 12
months, or 1 year and it causes seasons. The Earth follows a definite path
called orbit. It does not leave the orbit because of gravity.
Let Us Practice

Activity 1
A. Read the sentences. Unscramble the letters to know what is described on
the given statement.

1. It is a place where people, animals and plants live.

THERA

2. An imaginary line which runs through the center of the earth

between the north and south poles.

XISA

3. It is the turning of the earth on its own axis.

TARONOTI

4. The earth’s axis is ______________.

TEDLIT

5. The earth rotates on its axis. What do you mean by the

underlined word?
PINSS

You have now come across with new words. Remember,

these are not the same thing! Let's do an activity that you will
deeply understand the difference between rotation and revolution
and you can describe the effects of earth’s motion.
B. Compare the movement of the hands of the clock and the rotation of the
earth. Answer the following questions below.

Lagbao2020

Questions:

1. In what ways are they similar? ___________________________

2. In what ways are they different? __________________________

C. Supply the blanks with the correct word to make the statement correct.
Choose your answer on the given box below.

west to east South Pole axis

23.5 degrees 24 hours or 1 day North Pole

1. The Earth tilts on its axis at an angle of ____________.

2. An imaginary line that runs through the earth ____________.
3. The two opposite ends of the axis are and ____________ and ____________.
4. One complete rotation of the Earth is ____________hours or _________ day.
5. Earth rotates on its axis from _________to _________.
Let Us Practice More

Activity 2: Day and Night

A. Look at the illustration and identify the difference of night and day. Answer
the given questions.

1. What can you see 2. What can you see at

during the day? night?

_____________________ _____________________

_____________________ _____________________

Lagbao2020

B. Based on the diagram above. Fill in the missing word and use the word
bank to complete the statement. Write your answer on the separate sheet of
paper.

moon sun day Earth clouds

1. The __________________ shines during the _______________.

2. The __________________ goes around the sun.
3. Night occurs when the ________________ and ___________ covers the sun.

The rotation of the earth causes day and night. It is day on the part of

the earth that is facing the sun. It is night in the part of the earth that is not

facing the sun. The earth rotates in a counter-clockwise direction.

Activity 3: Rotation vs Revolution
Read each bubble and determine if the phrase is describing the rotation or
the revolution of the Earth. Write your answer on the given table.

Earth is its around It causes
turning on the sun. day and
its axis. night.

Rotation Revolution
Let Us Remember

• Rotation is the movement of the earth on its own axis.

• Rotation gives us day and night.
• It takes about 24 hours or one day for Earth to make one complete
rotation.
• Revolution is the movement of the Earth around the sun.
• The tilt of the earth’s axis and its revolution around the sun cause
changes in the seasons.
• It takes 365 ¼ days or one year for the earth to complete one
revolution.

Let Us Asses

Read the questions carefully. Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the
letter on a separate sheet of paper.

7. What will happen in one year’s time?

A. Sun makes one complete spin on its axis.

B. Earth makes one complete spin on its axis.
C. Earth makes one complete revolution around the sun.
D. Moon makes one complete revolution around the earth.

8. Which of the following is an example of revolution?

A. Boy running around the oval C. Movement of clock’s hand

B. Ferris wheel D. Spinning top

9. Which of the following defines earth’s rotation?

A. Earth’s atmosphere C. Earth spinning on its axis

B. Tilting of the Earth’s axis D. Earth's orbital path around
the Sun
10. In what direction does the earth rotates?

A. east to west C. south to north

B. north to south D. west to east
Let Us Enhance

Using Venn diagram, compare and contrast rotation from revolution.

ROTATION REVOLUTION

Rotation and revolution are both movements of the earth. Rotation is

the earth’s movement on its axis causing day and night. Revolution on the
other hand, is earth’s movement around the sun causing different seasons.
