WHAT IS ALGAE?
A protist that has a cellulose cell wall
Contain chlorophyll
Lack of true roots, stems, and leaves, and a vascular system
Autotrophs and Heterotropes
Unicellular and Multicellular
Aquatic habitats: freshwater and saltwater

1
REPRODUCTION
Asexual or Vegetative Method
Sexual Reproduction

6 GROUP OF ALGAE
1. Unicellular
Euglenoids
Diatoms
Dinoflagellates
2. Multicellular
Red Algae
Brown Algae
Green Algae
2
EUGLENOIDS (EUGLENOPHYTA)
Unicellular
Live in freshwater
Have animal traits
Autotrophic but may also be Heterotrophic.
Paramylon
Pellicle

3
DIATOMS (BACILLARIOPHYTA)

Unicellular
live in marine or freshwater
contain chlorophyll as well as pigments
called carotenoids
Diatomaceous earth
Autotrophic
Leucosine
Silica

4
DINOFLAGELLATES (PYRROPHYTA)
Unicellular
live in marine or freshwater
Has 2 flagella that spin the cell
“Fire plants”
Autotrophic or heterotrophic.
Source of food for aquatic animals
Some forms of dinoflagellates produce toxins
Cellulose & silicon.

5
