1.3 REFERENCES
1.3.1 Order of Precedence

In case of conflict between this specification and the documents listed herein, the
SUBCONTRACTOR shall take precedence in the following order:
1. Algerian legal requirements (Algerian laws, edicts, regional or local regulations, etc.)
2. Sonatrach Standards
3. This Specification
4. Project Specifications
5. International Codes and Standards

2 SCOPE OF INSTRUMENT LOOP TEST

2.1 DEFINITION
Loop test is performed to check single loop signal transition to/from instrument and signal receiver
(DCS, ESD, FGS, FACP, etc.). In the case of intelligent type instruments, dummy output from the
instrument to the signal receiver is read on HMI display in control room. Both process variable and its
unit of measurement shall be examined.

2.2 LOOP TEST READINESS

In general, Loop Test shall be conducted only after all construction activities and inspections are
completed. However, Loop test can be proceeded if the outstating construction activity is only impulse
tubing related part because it does not affect signal loop performance.

2.3 INSTRUMENTS TO BE LOOP TESTED

2.3.1 Instruments Installed by Contractor

All Instruments installed by Contractor are subject to loop testing as per the test method described

Internal
COMPANY: SONATRACH The COMPANY 'S DOC. NO.

CONTRACTOR: DOC. No.:

JOB No.: Rev.: A

in following sections.

If there is a more reasonable testing means from viewpoints of work efficiency and reliability, it can
be applied with agreement of CA.

2.3.2 Packaged Instrument System – Skid-Mounted Instruments

Loop test will not be performed where instruments are already connected to Local Control Panel
(LCP) at factory and where local panel will only be powered by Contractor by installing cables.
This is because those instruments are tested / verified at vendor factory.
The skid verification result will be recorded by means of vendor’s SAT completion.

At the receiving stage of packaged instrument systems, visual check shall be conducted based on
vendor document. In accordance with Vendor’s procedure, necessary inspection and/or functional testing
will be performed with the support from Subcontractor.

2.3.3 Packaged Instrument System

Instrument loop test shall be conducted for packaged instrument in the following cases:
 Instruments are loose supplied by package vendor and installed at site by Contractor.
 Instruments are installed by Vendor at factory, connected only to junction box, while
main cables between control system and junction boxes are installed at site.

At the receiving stage of packaged instrument systems, visual check shall be conducted based on
vendor document.

Loop test should be conducted as per vendor drawings and result should be recorded into project
ITR format.

3 JOB EXECUTION

In general, each test shall be carried out by Subcontractor under witness by CA and/or CHECK as
shown in ITP for Site Instrumentation Work.

4 TEST EQUIPMENT

4.1 TEST TOOLS

Test equipment/tools shall be proved by testing with the working standard equipment to establish
measurement traceability. As a rule, the proving test shall be conducted on the first working day in every
month. Result of the proving test shall be logged for traceability control. If the accuracy range becomes
out of requirement, test equipment should be replaced or repaired accordingly. Each test equipment
shall have a unique number for traceability control purpose, for example MC1, MC2 (MC: Multi-
Calibrator).

4.1 TEST DOCUMENTS

Contractor should prepare Loop Pack which should be consisting of following documents:
- Loop Test ITR format printed out from system
- Loop Drawing for the loop
- Instrument Data Sheet
- Instrument Index and Alarm Management Report (for alarm set point verification)
- Instrument Location Layout Drawing

5 TEST REPORT

Result of each test and inspection shall be logged on tag wise report sheet.

6 DETAIL TEST PROCEDURE

Result of each test and inspection shall be logged on tag wise report sheet.

6.1 OVERVIEW OF LOOP TEST PROCEDURE

Loop Test should be proceeded as per following sequence.
(1) Completion of construction work on the instrument
(2) Perform Pre-Loop Test by Subcontractor
(3) Issue of Notification for Inspection (NFI) by contractor
(4) Conduct Loop Test and record punches if any
(5) Clear all punches (if applicable)

6.2 PRE-LOOP TEST

contractor shall perform Pre-Loop Testing which is contractor internal loop testing prior to issue
NFI for CA and/or Contractor witness. Same activity with Loop Testing shall be conducted during this
Pre-Loop Test. NFI to be issued only the loops which passed Pre-Loop test successfully.

6.3 LOOP TEST

(1) The terminology “Loop Test” in this document is a single loop test but not a comprehensive
control loop test. For example, an FIC loop case, AI from transmitter and AO from DCS to control valve
is tested individually. Finally, FIC total loop check is performed on cold run stage as well as PID
parameter optimization tuning of the FIC controller.

In general, the completed instrument loop shall be tested as one system, and where necessary,
adjustments shall be made. Associated alarm and trip actions of DCS and/or board mounted instruments
shall be checked during loop testing.

(2) In general, testing is performed at five points 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% signal. Under
range/ upper range of transmitters will also be checked for failure monitoring.

(3) For transmitters which can be input actual value such as pressure, Loop Test should be
conducted with providing input to transmitter when it is possible. For the intelligent instrument and not
possible to input actual value such as vortex flowmeter, output signal is generated by instrument itself
(dummy signal) in the constant output mode to be set by HART communicator. Difference between
signal sender (instrument) and receiver (DCS) should be within +/- 1%.

(4) Conformity of unit of measurement between instrument and ICSS shall be verified in this stage.

(5) For conventional instruments and special instruments which have no constant signal mode
mentioned above, actual I/O signal testing shall be performed such like by providing pressure to the
instrument.

(6) Simple devices such as hand switch and vibration switch shall be manually activated.

(7) Analyzers and special instruments shall be checked according to manufacturer’s instructions.

(8) Prior to commencement of loop test, set power and instrument air supply and confirm that
voltage and pressure are being in a normal range.

(9) Air blow for Instrument Air supply line to control/on-off valves should be conducted before
pressurizing the line to ensure the cleanness.

(10) Typical test patterns are described in the ATTACHMENT 1.

(11) After completion of Loop Test, Subcontractor shall put “Red Tag or Red Tape” on the
instrument for field identification as per Inspection and Test Plan.

6.4 INSTRUMENT CABLE DISCONNECTION AFTER LOOP TESTING

Instruments maybe disconnected from line for piping testing, at that time, cable will also be
required to be disconnected from instrument.
In the case cable is required to be disconnected from instrument, then Re-Loop Testing shall be
performed after reinstatement.

Re-Loop Test could be simple verification of reinstatement and not as per ITR format.

Re-Loop Test for control / on-off valves could be verified by stroking the valve from open to close
or close to open by Subcontractor.

Re-Loop Test for field instrument could be verified by monitoring I/O fail status at ICSS system by
Subcontractor (fail status becomes healthy and showing ambient condition).
