1. Who is a Consumer?

 Consumers can be either an individual or group of people who purchase or use goods and
services solely for personal use, and not for manufacturing or resale.

2. What is the need of consumer awareness among the people?

 Consumer awareness is important so that buyer can take the right decision and make the
right choice.

3. When and where did the first consumer movement started?

 Ralph Nader, an American lawyer and activist, started a movement in America to bring
consumer awareness.

4. When Consumer Protection Act took place?

 The Consumer Protection Bill, 1986 was passed by both the Houses of Parliament and it
received the assent of the President on 24th December, 1986.

 The full form of COPRA is The Consumer Protection Act, 1986. This was the act of Parliament
of India enacted in 1986 to protect the interests of consumers

6. When was COPRA passed by law?

 The Consumer Protection Act,1986 (COPRA) was an Act by the Parliament of India elected to
protect the interests of consumers in India.It was replaced by the Consumer Protection Act,
2019.

7. What awareness must be spread among the people?

 Consumers should be made aware of their various rights like the right to be informed, right
to choose. Consumers should be made aware of duties like reading the instruction before buying
a product.

8. Why is it necessary for a consumer to take a bill after every purchase?


 Every consumer must demand the bill after purchase of goods and services. The bill is the
proof of purchase and can be used to seek justice if the consumer feels cheated after buying
the commodity.

9. How do the shopkeeper cheat the people?

 Substandard quality The traders may cheat the consumers by degrading the quality of the
product and selling those in the market like expired products, defective items.

10. Give some common ways in which people are exploited in market place.

 Adulteration, poor quality, variations in the contents of the pack, use of deceptive or
fractional weights, misleading and dishonest advertisements, unfair monopolistic and restrictive
trade practices are the ways and means by which the consumer is exploited to the maximum
extent possible.

11. Name some common organisation which spread the awareness of consumer awareness?

 The two Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO's) which are working in India to protect and
promote the consumer interests are: Voluntary Organisation in Interest of Consumer Education
(VOICE), Delhi. Consumer Guidance Society of India (CGSI), Mumbai.

12. Who is called the father of Consumer movement?

 Ralph Nader, a leading American political activist and author is known as the father of the
consumer movement.

may be of small value but its impact on the society as a whole may be very large. They can also
take the help of consumer organisations in seeking redressal of their grievances.
