My mother and father already had three older children when I was born. My two
brothers werethirteen and seventeen, and my sister was nineteen. I was the baby
of the family. When my sister gotmarried and had my nephew, Jack, I was three.
So my nephew was more like my brother. When wewere children we spent a lot
of time together. I was a typical last child – quite naughty – I was alwaysgetting
into trouble. I left school when I was sixteen and got a job in a shop. But Jack
was a typicalfirst child. He worked hard at school, and was much more ambitious
than me. I got interested instudying much later than Jack, and started university
last year. I’m training to be a teacher. Jack’s gota great job now as a director of
his own company, and he earns a lot more money than I will. But thebest thing
about Jack is his sense of humour. He’s the funniest person I know. When we
see each otherwe feel like children again!

leftuniversity and got jobs, and moved to different places. Tony and Megan got

Tuffley Primary School in Scotland has recently won the Green School of the
Year award and £5,000. It is the firstschool in Scotland to win this important prize.
The school won the prize because last year students decided to ‘gogreen’ and
formed a group to do something to help the environment. All the students in the
school joined in. Withtheir teachers’ help, younger students built a special garden
to protect birds and other wild animals. All thestudents in the school decided to
walk or cycle to school. ‘The kids didn’t have to do this, but they really wantedto,’
said Moira Douglas, a mother of two students at the school. Some of the older
students set up a small farm with some chickens. They grew their own vegetables
in the schoolgarden and sold them to parents and local people. ‘The children
have learnt so much and have worked so hard,’said Mr MacDougal, the head
teacher at the school. ‘We are delighted with this prize.’‘We just want to help the
planet,’ said Keely Williamson, aged 7. ‘Everybody can help.’
Last month there was a large earthquake in the Sichuan area in China. The earthquake upset
the pandas at the famous Wolong reserve, which was right at the centre of the earthquake
and is badly damaged.
Eight of the young animals have now arrived at Beijing zoo, and the zoo keepers there are
giving them lots of attention to help them recover.
Conservationists hope their arrival at the zoo will make people more aware of the damage
to their habitat and encourage people to give donations to the reserve. It could take ten or
twenty years for the reserve to recover. The earthquake destroyed many buildings and large
areas of bamboo, and a new road is now unusable. The earthquake also killed four staff
members and left a fifth person seriously ill in hospital.
The keepers at the reserve were really worried when they saw the pandas after the
earthquake. They were very frightened and they didn’t want to eat. It has taken a while, but
now their appetite is back to normal and they are eating 10–18 kg of bamboo a day, plus
milk, carrots, apples and steamed buns.
Six pandas escaped during the earthquake and, sadly, two of them are still missing. They
may now be dead, but keepers hope they have escaped into the wild and that they will
return to the reserve, because they are very close to their keepers.
