I think most of you would agree that Lexington is a beautiful, green, clean and orderly city,
but in the cold months you probably miss seeing people walking downtown. Sometimes the city
looks lifeless. Where are the locals? Do they really exist? And then comes summer! Summer
brings people downtown and to the neighborhoods to do all sorts of activities. Lexington is a city
that suddenly blooms like the spring flowers!
There are several free musical activities in Lexington. Every Tuesday night starting in June
they have the Southland Jamboree, a free outdoor concert with Bluegrass music performed live by
regional musicians. This concert is in the field behind the Collins Bowling Center on Southland
Drive starting at 7 PM. Bluegrass music originated in Kentucky, so it is a part of our traditional
culture that you can learn about. All you need to bring is a lawn chair or a blanket to sit on.
Also on Tuesday evenings, there is another free outdoor concert featuring another
traditional American style of music. The Big Band and Jazz Festival is held at Beaumont Circle in
May and June and in Ecton Park in July and August, starting at 7 PM. Some people bring picnic
dinners to share with their friends. I love big band music and jazz and my husband probably
enjoys the bluegrass more but the truth of the matter is that both are a fun and relaxing way to
spend an evening.
For those who would like to enjoy music downtown, there is the weekly Thursday Night Live
concert at Cheapside Park (251 W. Main Street) every Thursday starting at 4:30. This music is
typically Rock and Pop music, and brings in a big crowd of young people. Again, this weekly
outdoor concert is free.
Another amazing activity that I would love to take you to see is the Patriotic Concert at
Transylvania University on July 3rd. This free concert starts at 8 PM, but we usually get there
about 6:30 and enjoy a relaxing picnic before the music starts. This is my favorite concert because
it is a typical American activity. The music is great, the people are extraordinary and there is a
sense of unity and belonging that warms your heart. People enjoy listening to traditional patriotic
songs to celebrate our country's independence while feeling the summer breeze. Please email me
at lina.crocker@uky.edu if you would like to attend this concert with me.
Yes, Lexington is alive and well, and enjoying the many free musical events this summer!

The following four poems were written by the Ecuadorian students for a class
assignment in Hema Ramachandrans course, they wrote about their heritage
using the original poem Where Im From by George Ella Lyons as a template.
The resulting poems are thoughtful and inspiring. Because of time and space, we
were not able to include all of them in the last newsletter, but have been able to
submit the rest that were sent to us in this newsletter. They are all thoughtful
and meaningful works of poetry. Thank you to everyone who contributed their
poetry and thank you to Hema for facilitating the opportunity to share their
beautiful work.
