INDEX
 ANALYSIS OF RATES
 RATES OF ITEM OF WORK DEPENDS ON THE FOLLOWING
CRITERIA
 WHAT IS ROAD WORKS
 LAYERS
 SCHEDULE RATES
 NUMERICAL
ANALYSIS OF RATES

 The determination of rate per unit of a particular item of work from the cost
of quantities of materials, the cost of labourers and other miscellaneous
expenses required for Its completion is known as analysis of rate.
 A reasonable profit, usually 10% For the contractor is also included in the
analysis of rate. Rates of materials are usually taken as the rates delivered at
the site of work and include cost at origin, cost of transport, railway freight if
any, taxes, etc. Cost of transportation is also added if the material is carried
from distant place, more than 8km(5miles).
Rates of item of work depends on the
following-
 Specifications of work and materials, quality of materials, proportion of
mortar, etc.
 Quantities of materials and their rates, number of different Types of labourer
and their rates.
 Location of site of work and its distances from the sources of materials and
the rate of transport, availability of water.
 Profits and miscellaneous and overhead expenses of contactor
 Overhead costs- Overhead costs include general office expenses, rents, taxes,
supervision and other costs which are indirect expenses and not productive
expenses on the job.
1)General overheads- Rent and taxes, Establishment (Office staff)
2)Job overheads- Supervision, Repairs, Workers insurance, Losses on advance
ROAD WORKS
 work done in constructing or repairing roads is known as road works

LAYERS
 Subgrade Earthwork (Embankment)
 Sub base (GSB)
 Base (WBM,WMM)
 Binder course
 Surface Course
 Typical cross section of a flexible
pavement

 Typical Cross section of Rigid pavement

SUBGRADE EARTHWORK

 subgrade is the native material underneath a constructed road, pavement

 It is also called formation level.
 The term can also refer to imported material that has been used to build an
embankment
SUB BASE (GSB)

 The granular subbase forms the lowest (bottom) layer of the

pavement structure, and acts as the principal foundation for the
subsequent road profile, provides drainage for the pavement
structure, and protects the structure from frost.
BASE COARSE

 The base course or basecourse in pavements is a

layer of material. It is located under the surface
layer consisting of the wearing course and
sometimes an extra binder course
 It has two methods
1. Water Bound Macadam. It is the layer of broken
stone aggregates bound together by stone dust or
filled by screening material and water applied
during construction and compacted by heavy
smoothed wheel roller.
2. Wet Mix Macadam laying method contains of laying
spreading and compacting of clean, crushed, well-
graded granular materials on a prepared Sub base.
BINDER COURSE

 a coarse aggregate bound with bitumen between the foundation and the
surface course of a pavement.
 Some of its types are
Dense Bituminous Macadam
Bituminous macadam
Bituminous concrete
Semi dense Bituminous Concrete
SURFACE COURSE

 Surface course or wearing course is the top most layer of flexible pavement
which has direct contact with the vehicular loads
