I. Product introduction

MPIP-618W in-vehicle terminal integrates internationally leading


technologies of GPS, GSM, intelligent automatic control and anti-theft
alarming. It is able to monitor the position, safety, operation and
technical status of the moving target 24 hours a day, and it can provide
you with services like real-time positioning, fleet management,
anti-theft of vehicle, asking for help in case of accident,
trouble-shooting, information inquiring, etc.

II. Disclaimer

1. The User Manual applies to MPIP-618W in-vehicle terminal only;


2. MPIP-618W in-vehicle terminal is developed based on the GPS
applied technology of the United States. Since its GPS receiver must
always keep direct communication with the satellite in the course of
operation, the equipment may be affected when it operates in
electromagnetic shielded areas or when the carrier (such as a vehicle)
using it is under some shelters like indoors, in the underground parking
lot or under a footbridge;
3. MPIP-618W in-vehicle terminal is a radio communication equipment.
The product in use shall be kept as far away as possible from areas that
might lead to explosion like fuel warehouses, chemical plants, and so
on. The product may be affected in places sensitive to external
radio-frequency signals, such as gas stations, hospitals, schools, etc,
where radio frequency suppressors may be installed;
4. Because data communication is conducted between the system
adopting GSM technology and the monitoring center, the user must use
SIM cards supporting GPRS data traffic offered by the public
communication network operators that offer support to the region
within which the vehicle operates. Besides, the SIM card shall always
contain sufficient value installed. Do not use SIM cards subject to
limitations of regions;
5. Please use accessories provided by the original manufacturer to
guarantee normal operation of the product;

III. Start to Use

2. Driver installation & Parameter setup of MPIP-618W


1) Installation of USB Cable driver
(1) Login to www.freelivetrack.com, find 'MPIP-618 PC TOOL'
installation package under 'Help' menu and download. Open 'MPIP-618
PC TOOL' and run 'AutoRun.exe', then you will see main installation
interface as follows in Fig. 3-2-1:

(2) In the Autorun interface, click “Install USB Driver” to start
installation of USB Cable driver as shown in Fig. 3-2-2:

(3) Click “Next”, and the interface as shown in Fig. 3-2-3 will appear.
Read the “License Agreement”, select “I accept …”, and click “Next”.

(4) Click “Finish” to complete the installation as shown in Fig. 3-2-4.

2) Installation of MPIP-618 PC Tools


(1) After the USB Cable driver is installed, the computer returns to the
Autorun interface as shown in Fig. 3-2-5:

(2) In the Autorun interface, click “Install PC Tool” to install the
parameter setup program of the main unit as shown in Fig. 3-2-6:

(3) The installation program will run automatically. The interface as
shown in Fig. 3-2-7 will appear. The user may select the path for
program installation or the path by default. Click “Next” to start
installation:

(4) Click “Next” to complete the installation as shown in Fig. 3-2-8:

(5) After the installation is finished, the system will automatically

create shortcut key on the desktop.


3) Parameter setup
(1) Connect one end of the 8-pin connector of USB Cable with the
RS232 connector of main unit, and the other end of USB connector
with the USB interface of the computer as shown in Fig. 3-2-9:

! WARNING: Make sure that you select the USB interface functioning
normally for connection.
(2) After both ends of the USB Cable are connected, the interface as
shown in Fig. 3-2-10 will appear on the lower right corner of the
computer display:

(3) USB Cable will automatically identify the driver. In about 30
seconds, the interface as shown in Fig. 3-2-11 will appear on the lower
right corner of the display to prompt that USB Cable can operate
normally:

(4) Double click the shorMPIPt key on the desktop, and the
system will automatically detect the main unit for communication
connection. Upon successful connection, the computer will display the
main interface of parameter setup as shown in Fig. 3-2-12:

Remarks: The system adopts operating mode of Auto-ID COM port. If

the system fails to identify the COM port between MPIP-618 main unit
and the computer within 30 seconds, it will automatically prompt the
box of “Initialize com port fail” as shown in Fig. 3-2-13:

!WARNING: When “Initialize com port fail” appears, the user shall
carefully check the installation process by referring to installation steps
of USB Cable driver and MPIP-618 PC Tools driver. If the installation
is free from any problems, the user should conduct installation on
another computer.

(5) Explanation of parameter setup


z Device ID: The product serial number is the sole identification code
for the equipment which has been fixed in the main unit and can not
be revised. The Device ID can be read only. Besides, Device ID is
an important piece of information for activation and registration of
the product;
Remarks: The product serial number tags are attached to the
package of the equipment, the User Manual and the main unit
casing as shown in Fig. 3-2-14:

The red box in the above figure is the serial number tag, on which
“1CA0010108400000001” is the product serial number.
z Country/region: The information about country/region used by the
equipment is blank when the equipment leaves the plant and it shall
be filled out by the user based on actual situation or directly
selected through the pull-down menu as shown in Fig. 3-2-15:

z Network: The information about GSM communication network
operator used by the equipment in the local area is blank when the

equipment leaves the plant and it shall be filled out by the user
based on actual situation or directly selected through the pull-down
menu as shown in Fig. 3-2-16:

z SIM Number: The SIM card number used by the equipment is blank
when the equipment leaves the plant and it shall be filled out by the
user based on actual situation;
z IP: This is the IP address for the data communication of the
equipment to connect the background server. The information is
provided by the MPIP-618 dealer;
z Port: This is the port number for the data communication of the
equipment to connect the background server. The information is
provided by the MPIP-618 dealer;
z APN: This is the access point for the SIM card mobile

communication service provider used by the equipment. The
information is provided by the SIM card communication service
provider used;
Remarks: The parameter setup program has built-in information
about communication operators of most countries in the world. In
the course of setup, the user may choose from the pull-down menu
as shown in Fig. 3-2-17, or the user may also enter relevant
information directly.

z User Name and Password: Based on requirements of different users,
the mobile communication provider may offer private network
service for some special users. Due to the particularity of the service
aforesaid, the APN information provided by the mobile
communication provider generally requires corresponding

information of user name and ID verification password. This type of
users must conduct corresponding parameter setup through the
setup menu of the two items mentioned above. General users may
leave the two items of parameter blank.
z Dual card switching function: This is the enabling setup of dual card
switching function. The equipment supports the function of dual
card single standby. The user may select this function in need of
using the function of dual card. After the function is selected by the
user, the setup interface will automatically prompt the parameter
setup interface of SIM card 2 as shown in Fig. 3-2-18:

(6) Explanation of parameter setup of SIM card 2
z Country/region, Network, SIM Number: All these information are
left blank when the equipment leaves the plant and shall be filled
out by the user based on actual situation;
z APN: Fill out the access point of the mobile communication service

provider corresponding to SIM card 2. The information is provided
by the SIM card 2 communication service provider;
Remarks: The parameter setup program has built-in information
about communication operators of most countries in the world. In
the course of setup, the user may choose from the pull-down menu,
or the user may also enter relevant information directly.
z User Name and Password: The setup is the same as that of SIM card
1.
Remarks: When operating in the mode of dual card, the equipment
supports connection with the same background server only. There is no
need of IP and PORT setup of the background server again for SIM
card 2.

VI. External Ports

1. Explanation of ports
The MPIP-618W main unit has 6 external ports, namely multi-function
cable port (including G-mouse port), GSM antenna port, RS485 port,
RS232 port, Extend RS232 port, and Microphone port as shown in the
following figure:

VII. Installation Guide

!WARNING: The operations below are for reference only. We


recommend that the product shall be installed by technicians
specialized in vehicle circuit installation. We are not liable for damage
to the vehicle circuit caused by improper operation of the client.
1. Installation of SIM card
Insert the SIM card before installation of the main unit. The installation
of SIM card includes single card installation and dual card installation,
operation steps of which are as follows:
1) Open the side plate of the main unit with screw driver;
2) Insert the SIM cards by directing it at the card seat. Make sure that,
during insertion, the dent of the slanting side of SIM card is directing
outward;
3) Any of the two card slots can be used when single card function is
adopted;
4) Insert the second SIM card into the card seat if dual card function is
adopted;
5) Fix the side plate to the main unit, fasten the screw and secure it.

Refer to the following figure for installation of SIM card:

!WARNING: Pay attention to the order of SIM card during dual card
installation. Follow instructions shown on the figure strictly during dual
card installation.

2. Operation specifications of wire installation


1) Method of wire checking
Prior to product installation, the user may refer to the following
instructions to locate the connection positions of functional cables in
the vehicle.
(1) Methods of locating the power cord
Power cord position: It is generally located in the wiring harness inside
the baffle plate under the steering wheel, inside the door wiring harness
of the driver’s seat, or inside the fuse box. It can also be directly
connected with the positive pole of the vehicle battery jar.
Method of locating: ground one end of the test probe and put the other
end on the power cord. The key is respectively in the position of OFF,

ON or ACC, and the LED indicator of the test probe always lights
constantly.

(2) Methods of locating the ground wire


The ground wire of vehicle generally adopts the mode of grounding.

(3) Methods of locating ACC detection wire (IGN+)


ACC detection wire (IGN+) is the ground based on which the main unit
judges whether the vehicle is in the started mode, and it may be located
in the wiring harness inside the baffle plate under the steering wheel or
inside the fuse box.
Method of locating: ground one end of the test probe and put the other

end on the wire. When the vehicle key is respectively in the position of
ACC, ON or START, the LED indicator of the test probe illuminates.
When the key returns to the position of OFF, the LED indicator of the
test probe goes off.
!WARNING: ACC detection wire (IGN+) must connected.

(4) Methods of locating door pin switch


The door pin switch input is the ground based on which the main unit
judges the states of the vehicle door, and it is located in the wiring
harness inside the right front door.
There are high-level and low-level detections of vehicle door pin
switch.

!WARNING: The door pin switch detecting wire of MPIP-618W main


unit supports low-level detection only. If the vehicle adopts high-level
detection, the negative signals must be converted into positive signals
through external relay.

The high-level detection mechanism is: When the vehicle door is closed,
the voltage of door pin switch is low-level. When the vehicle door is
open, the voltage of door pin switch turns into high-level, and the main
unit judges that the door is opened;
The low-level detection mechanism is: When the vehicle door is closed,
the voltage of door pin switch is high-level. When the vehicle door is
open, the voltage of door pin switch turns into low-level, and the main
unit judges that the door is opened;
Method of locating: most door pin switches are negative triggering.
Connect one end of the test probe with the positive electricity and the
other end put on the wire, and the LED indicator of test probe will go
off when the vehicle door is closed. The LED indicator of test probe
will light constantly when one vehicle door is opened.

(5) Methods of locating door lock control wires
Location of the door lock control wires: The door lock control wires
consist of locking and unlocking control wires. Generally, they are
located in the wiring harness inside the right front door, or the wiring
harness inside the left or right door side.
Method of locating: The door lock control modes generally include
positive triggering, negative triggering, etc.
!WARNING: The door lock control wire output of MPIP-618W main
unit supports negative triggering only. If the vehicle adopts positive
triggering, the negative signals must be converted into positive signals
through external relay.
Positive triggering: Put one end of the test probe on the positive
electricity and connect the other end respectively with the door locking
control wire and the unlocking control wire. If the door can be opened
and closed, it is positive triggering;
Negative triggering: ground one end of the test probe and connect the
other end respectively with the door locking control wire and the

unlocking control wire. If the door can be opened and closed, it is
negative triggering.

(6) Methods of locating fuel pump wire


Characteristics of fuel pump wire: When the engine is not started, the
wire has no voltage signal. When the engine is started, the wire has
voltage signal.
Location of fuel pump wire: It is generally located inside the wiring
harness of the left or right front door side, inside the fuse box or under
the back seat, close to the fuel tank.

2) Connection of multi-function cable


Warning: Take out the fuse inside the fuse seat of the power cord
before installation to guarantee power-down operation
(1) Refer to the explanation of functional ports as shown in the
“MPIP-618W Port Connection Diagram”. Connect the ports to be used
with the vehicle circuit;

(2) The connecting of power cord requires that fuse seat among the
installation accessories of connection should be installed within 0.3m
from the joint. Principle of local grounding for the MPIP-618W main
unit is adopted by the ground wire, and the grounding wire must not
exceed 1m long.

3. Placement of the MPIP-618W main unit


1) The location for placement of the MPIP-618W main unit should be
determined in advance. The location should allow secure installation,
concealment, anti-humidity, avoidance of high-temperature area, and be
far away from magnetic field, air bag, sound system, ABS system and
other sensitive electronic equipment. In addition, it should be installed
where it is hard to be found.
2) Recommended installation location for the MPIP-618W main unit:
the concealed position inside the decorated board under the dashboard
or under the seat. Refer to the following diagram for the specific
installation location:

Magic tape can be used to fix the main unit to the vehicle body.

4. Installation of G-mouse (GPS receiver)


G-mouse must not be installed under metal baffle plate because it can
hinder receipt of GPS signals, thus affecting the normal monitoring and
positioning of the MPIP-618W main unit. G-mouse is generally placed
inside the decorated plate under the front or rear windshield or on the
dashboard. Refer to the following diagram for the specific installation
location:

Remarks: Try to install G-mouse as horizontally as possible. Place the
convex upward, and its included angle with the ground must not exceed
15 degrees. Besides, it must be fixed securely.

5. Installation of GSM antenna


GSM antenna is installed at a concealed place inside the vehicle but the
place should not be closed too much. Generally it is placed inside the
decorated plate under the steering wheel or at the included angle inside
the decorated plate under the front or rear windshield to ensure smooth
transmission of communication signals. Refer to the following diagram
for the specific installation location:

6. Installation of SOS button
The SOS button should be placed between the dashboard and the
steering wheel to facilitate operation of the driver. The SOS button has
adhesive tape stuck to its back. At the time of installation, remove the
adhesive tape and attach it to the intended position. Refer to the
following diagram for the specific installation location:

7. Installation of Anti-removal device and Immobilizer
relay
The In-Vehicle terminal is equipped with Anti-removal device and
Immobilizer relay, these components can realize automatic locking and
remote fuel/power cut-off of the vehicle when the in-Vehicle terminal
is dismantled or the vehicle is stolen.
1) If the fuel supply of the vehicle is of “fuel pump” type, the
Anti-removal device and Immobilizer relay should be connected as
shown in “MPIP-618W Port Connection Diagram (for fuel pump)”
in Section VI of the User manual.
2) If the fuel supply of the vehicle is of mechanical “start motor” type,
the Anti-removal device and Immobilizer relay should be connected
as shown in “MPIP-618W Port Connection Diagram (for start
motor)” in Section VI of the User manual.

8 Finishing the installation

1) After all equipment is installed, insert the fuse into the fuse seat to
power on the MPIP-618W main unit.
2) In the meanwhile start the vehicle to check if equipment in the
vehicle works normally.
3) Upon discovery of any abnormality, power off the MPIP-618W main
unit. Recheck all installation wires or send it to a professional vehicle
service center for check.
4) Log on the “Client software of the monitoring center” or the
“Internet-based WEB vehicle tracking system” to check if the vehicle is
normally online and the positioning is proper. If there are problems,
refer to Section X of the User Manual for problem solving. Contact the
local dealer if the problems cannot be solved.

9. Indication of operation status of the main unit

VIII. Functions of In-Vehicle Terminal

★Global Satellite Positioning


The in-vehicle terminal is able to receive the GPS signals and realize
function of global satellite positioning.

★Real-time monitoring
The in-vehicle terminal is of communication function, able to conduct
data communication with the operation center server as well as realize
real-time monitoring.

★Inquiring vehicle position


The user may inquire the vehicle position through the Internet or
desktop monitoring software of computer.

★Timed tracking
The user may issue the timed tracking order through the Internet or
desktop monitoring software of computer to track the vehicle position
at a given time.

★ Timed compression and return transmission


The user may set the operating mode of timed compression and return
transmission for the in-vehicle terminal. The information about position
of the vehicle which has been set the foregoing operating mode will be
compressed and transmitted to server of the center.

★Vehicle status detection
If the in-vehicle terminal is connected with ACC and door pin switch
wire, the center can check the current status of the vehicle.

★Emergency alarm
In case that the vehicle is robbed or gets involved in severe accident,
the user may press and hold the “SOS button” installed in a concealed
place for about 3 seconds, and the in-vehicle terminal will transmit
information about emergency alarm to the center for help.

★Abnormality alarm
When collision, over speeding, GPS failure, main power cut-off, etc.
occurs, the in-vehicle terminal will report to the center of the
abnormality.

★Regional alarm
The in-vehicle terminal may set up regional parameters. When the
vehicle enters or leaves the pre-set region, the in-vehicle terminal will
report to the center of the abnormality.

★Unlocking and locking the door remotely


The user may issue the order of unlocking or locking the door remotely
through the Internet or desktop monitoring software of computer to
remotely control unlocking or locking of the vehicle door.

★Switching off the motor remotely
When it is confirmed that the vehicle is stolen by mobsters, the user
may issue the order of terminating fuel/power remotely through the
Internet or desktop monitoring software of computer to remotely
control switching off of the motor. In addition, it can also remotely
issue order of resuming supply of fuel/power.
Remarks: In order to guarantee the safety of the vehicle and driver, the
system will not execute order of terminating fuel/power until the
vehicle is stopped and the motor is switched off by the driver.

★Anti-removal function
The equipment is provided with a small but smart anti-removal device
which, after connected with the main unit, can realize automatic
locking of the vehicle when the main unit is dismantled.

★Remote setup and maintenance


The center may, through the Internet or desktop monitoring software of
computer, set up and maintain the parameters of the in-vehicle terminal.

★Supplementary report for blind area


When the communication signals of the in-vehicle terminal are
terminated, including blind area of signal and termination of
networking, the in-vehicle terminal will automatically store the
positioning information. When the network resumes normal operation,

the in-vehicle terminal will make a supplementary report to the server
of the center of the previously stored positioning information.

★Statistics of mileage
The in-vehicle terminal will automatically count up the mileage and
report it to the center.

★Intelligent power-saving operating mode


The in-vehicle terminal may, as per the operation of the vehicle, enter
the power-saving operating mode automatically to lower consumption
of the vehicle power.

IX. Notes for Care and Maintenance

To ensure proper usage and extend service life of the in-Vehicle


terminal, the following should be paid attention to in the course of
installation, use, care and maintenance:
1) The voltage range of normal power supply for the in-Vehicle
terminal is DC 9V—36V, and the recommended operating voltage is
12V or 24V. Prior to installation, the user shall make sure if the power
system falls within the range aforesaid.
2) When the in-Vehicle terminal is powered on, do not plug in or pull
out the antenna or remove SIM card to avoid damage to the in-Vehicle
terminal and SIM card.
3) The connection socket of the in-Vehicle terminal shall avoid direct
contact with conductive body, otherwise it may result in short circuit
and danger.
4) Do not use the in-Vehicle terminal in an environment where there is
much dust. When washing the vehicle, try to prevent the terminal from
being soaked or showered to avoid damage to the terminal.
5) Keep using the in-Vehicle terminal in normal temperature. The
equipment may be damaged when operating for long in an environment
where the temperature is above 85℃ or lower than -40℃.
6) When the vehicle is inside building, tunnel or within a shielded area,
receiving of GPS signals and GSM communication network signals
will be affected. After the vehicle moves out of the area mentioned
above, receiving of GPS signals and GSM network will automatically

resume.
7) The main unit has built-in spare battery which will not be activated
and begin working until the equipment is used for the first time and
supplied with external power. After the battery is activated, the
equipment will, when the external power supply is cut off,
automatically switch to operate with power supply from the built-in
battery, and the operation can last for about 10 hours (calculated based
on that the terminal data transmits once every 5 minutes).
8) The terminal equipment can use the accessories designated or
recognized by CASTEL only. Unauthorized accessories may damage
the terminal equipment.
9) If abnormality occurs to the terminal equipment or its accessories,
thus leading to failure of normal operation, please contact the
manufacturer or the local dealer.

X. Solutions to Common Failures

Failure Analysis of possible causes and solutions
