The Journey of the Prophet
CHAPTER ONE
THE ORIGIN OF PROPHECY
“For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but
prophets though human, spoke for God as they were carried
along by the Holy Spirit” 2 Peter 1:21
3
Prince Mensah
Amos said whenever the Lord God speaks; the prophets can
do nothing than to prophesy. That is why Samuel said that
the Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word was in my
tongue. 2 Sam 23:2

The Journey of the Prophet
“And the LORD said unto Ahijah, Behold, the wife of Jeroboam
cometh to ask a thing of thee for her son; for he is sick: thus and
thus shalt thou say unto her: for it shall be, when she cometh in,
that she shall feign herself to be another woman”1kings 14:5
Prophet defined
A prophet or prophetess is God’s spokes person ; one who
hears the voice of God or receives a message from God
through word of knowledge, word of wisdom, visions,
dreams, trance, angelic visitation or directly from Jesus or
the Holy Spirit and communicate the message to its
recipients through speech or write up.

earth.
There are several men and women God has called to be His
prophets and prophetess from the Old Testament through to
the New Testament. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel
had great responsibilities and are known as Major Prophets.
Others such as Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah,
Nahum, Habakkuk had lesser responsibilities and are called
the Minor Prophets. Some prophets (Moses, Elijah and
Elisah) worked great miracles and wonders on earth while
others like Abraham, Enoch, Noah, Ahijah, Baleam, Jonah,
Agabus and John the Baptist never performed any miracles
but were great prophets of God

Visions
“He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an
angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius”
Acts 10:3
8
Prophet Daniel was a man who receieved a lot of visions
from the Lord. In this vision, he was awake and the Lord
conveyed a symbolic message to him through a vision.
“After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a
vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy
exceeding great reward” Gen 15:1
“And the LORD answered me, and said, write the vision, and
make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the
vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak,
and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely
come, it will not tarry” Habk 2:2-3 NJV
“The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see” Habk 1:1
the fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives by the
river of Chebar, that the heavens were opened, and I saw visions

“And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said,
Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I.” Gen 46:2

Jacob beheld the Lord in a dream and the Lord revealed His
plans and purpose for His servant and friend Abraham to
Jacob.
“And it came to pass that night, that the word of the LORD came
unto Nathan, saying” 2 Sam 7:4
“Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then
Daniel blessed the God of heaven” Dan 2:19
“And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring
you word again, as the LORD shall speak unto me: and the
princes of Moab abode with Balaam. And God came unto
Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee? And Balaam
said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent
unto me, saying, Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt,
which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them;
peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them
out. And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them;
thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed. And Balaam

rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get
you into your land: for the LORD refuseth to give me leave to go
with you. And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of
Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I
cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or
more. Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night,
that I may know what the LORD will say unto me more. And God
came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men come
to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I
shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do.” Num 22:8-13, 18-20
There are several others in the New Testament that the Lord
spoke to them through dreams and showed them things and
events to come.

Trance
“And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while
they made ready, he fell into a trance, and saw heaven opened,
and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great
sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth: Wherein
were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild
beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. And there came
a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat. But Peter said, not so,
Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or
unclean. And the voice spake unto him again the second time,
What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. This was
done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.”

Acts 10:10-16

John the revelator also fell into trance as though he was dead
but he could still see and hear what is happening around
him.

“And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the
Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast
out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him” Rev

“Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though
your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though
they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” Isaiah 1:18 and
Rev 6:2 shows that white is a symbol for redemption and/or
purity.

Through the years I later find out that other prophets in the
bible also had this experience.
“The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the
spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley
which was full of bones, and caused me to pass by them round
about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and,
lo, they were very dry.” Eze 37:1-2
20
The Journey of the Prophet
Please take note that it is the Lord that carries the prophet
spirit out of the body not the prophet projecting his spirit out
of his body.
“With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not
in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he
behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my
servant Moses?” Num 12:8
“Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven,
saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. The
people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it
thundered: others said, an angel spake to him” John

Divine Visitation
“And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and
he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day; and he lift up his
eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he
saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed
himself toward the ground, and said, My Lord, if now I have
found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy

“And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him
until the breaking of the day. And when he saw that he prevailed
not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the
hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will
not let thee go, except thou bless me. And he said unto him, What
is thy name? And he said, Jacob. And he said, Thy name shall be
called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power
with God and with men, and hast prevailed” Gen 32:24-28
“And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God
unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth” Luke 1:26

CHAPTER TWO
THE CALL TO THE OFFICE OF A PROPHET
25
Prince Mensah
“And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And
the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no
open vision” 1 Sam 3:1
The bible says that Samuel ministered before and unto the
Lord but he was not a prophet until God called him into the
office of a prophet.
You can never claim you have been called into the office of
the prophet without God first revealing His call to you
personally through dreams and visions. I believe this is
needed to sustain you through difficult and challancing time
in the ministry. There are times I wanted to doubt being
called by God but the voice of God I heard when He called
me in the dream was clear and kind of left an imprint in my
heart that it is till clear to me and I can not doubt that.
“Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he
26
The Journey of the Prophet
was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many
colours. And when his brethren saw that their father loved him
more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak
peaceably unto him. And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it
his brethren: and they hated him yet the more. And he said unto
them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: For,
behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf
arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood
round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf. And his brethren
said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed
have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his
dreams, and for his words” Gen 37:3-8
“Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest
of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and
came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. And the angel of the
LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a
bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and
the bush was not consumed. And Moses said, I will now turn
aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. And
when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto
him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he
said, Here am I” Exo 3:1-4
“And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD,
where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;
27

“In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting
upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.
Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain
he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with
twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy,
holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his
glory. And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that
cried, and the house was filled with smoke. Then said I, Woe is
me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I
dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have
seen the King, the LORD of hosts. Then flew one of the seraphims
unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with
the tongs from off the altar: And he laid it upon my mouth, and
said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken
away, and thy sin purged. Also I heard the voice of the Lord,
saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I,
Here am I; send me” Isaiah 6:1-8
28
The Journey of the Prophet
“Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Before I
formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth
out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet
unto the nations. Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot
speak: for I am a child. But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I
am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and
whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. Be not afraid of
their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD.
Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And
the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy
mouth. See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the
kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to
throw down, to build, and to plant” Jer 1:4-10
“And he said unto me, Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will
speak unto thee. And the spirit entered into me when he spake
unto me, and set me upon my feet, that I heard him that spake
unto me. And he said unto me, Son of man, I send thee to the
children of Israel, to a rebellious nation1 that hath rebelled
against me: they and their fathers have transgressed against me,
even unto this very day” Eze 2:1-3

Prince Mensah
Amos was a farmer and one day while doing his work on the
field, he had a vision and heard the Lord telling him to go
and prophesize and that is what made him a prophet.
30
The Journey of the Prophet
hand pointed a bible to his heart and the bible immerse with
the heart. He then saw apostles and prophets of old with
their names written boldly on their chest and in their mist he
saw a man whose head entered heaven making it impossible
to see the man’s face then he knew that the man was Jesus
and He spoke to T. B Joshua saying “I am your God; I am
giving you a divine commission to go and carry out the
work of the heavenly father.” He was given a small cross
and a bigger bible and a promised that as he keeps pressing
on, he would be given a bigger cross each year.

CHAPTER THREE
THE COMMISSION OF A PROPHET
After being called into the office of a prophet, the next step
is for you to receive your commission or mandate from God.
“Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that
thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of
Egypt” Exo 3:10
“And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but
understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. Make the
heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their
eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and
understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed”
Isaiah 6:9-10
“See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the
kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to
throw down, to build, and to plant” Jer 1:10
“And he said unto me, Son of man, I send thee to the children of
Israel, to a rebellious nation1 that hath rebelled against me: they
and their fathers have transgressed against me, even unto this
very day. For they are impudent children and stiffhearted. I do
send thee unto them; and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the
Lord GOD. And they, whether they will hear, or whether they will
forbear, (for they are a rebellious house,) yet shall know that
there hath been a prophet among them” Eze 2:3-5
34
The Journey of the Prophet
“Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah13 the son of
Amittai, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry
against it; for their wickedness is come up before me” Jonah 1:1-

“And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time,
saying, Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it
the preaching that I bid thee” Jonah 3:1-2

THE PROPHETIC MANTLE
“And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and
smote the waters, and said, where is the LORD God of
Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they
parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over” 2 Kings
2:14
“And Moses answered and said, but, behold, they will not
believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say,
The LORD hath not appeared unto thee. And the LORD
said unto him, what is that in thine hand? And he said, A
rod. And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on
the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from
before it. And the LORD said unto Moses, Put forth thine

hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand,
and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand: That they
may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God
of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath
appeared unto thee.” Exo 4:1-5

TAKE HEED
“And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast
received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it” Col 4:17
52
The Journey of the Prophet
Be Humble
The secret to be a great prophet is humility. When you are
humble, God will elevate you among your peers. You can
choose to be the chief prophet on earth and become the least
in heaven or you can choose to be the least among prophets
on earth and become great in heaven.
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto
thine own understanding” Proverbs 3:5
53
Prince Mensah
“But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of
God, and keep it” Luke 11:28
Be Obedient
The prophet is not above the word of God that he speaks. To
God favourite prophet, you have to obey God and speak
when He ask you to speak and be quiet when He ask you to
be silent. Prophet Jonah was swallowed by a whale. He
spent three days and three nights in the belly of the whale
because he disobeyed God by refusing to go to Nineveh
when the Lord sent him there.
“And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail
against thee; for I am with thee, saith the LORD, to deliver thee”
Jer 1:19
Fear not
Prophets are God spokesmen and since the Lord watches
over His word that proceeds out of the mouth of His
prophets, how much more will He not guide or protect His
54
The Journey of the Prophet
“He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love” 1 John
4:8
“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have
not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all
mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that
I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing” 1
Cor 13:1-2
Walk in Love
God is love and anyone who does not love does not know
God and if you don’t know God, you can not speak for Him.
If you really want to continue speaking for the Lord, walk in
love. If you really want your ministry to make a difference,
walk in love. If you want your word of prophecy to bring
live and blessing instead of guilt, pain, shame and death,
walk in love. The revelational gifts and the vocal gifts are
nothing without love. Seek love, find love, walk in love and
be lost in the love of God.

“Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy
not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy
deceits” Isaiah 30:10
Prophet Isaiah was told not to see again and not to prophecy
what is right to them.

“And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honourable
than they. And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith
Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee
from coming unto me: For I will promote thee unto very great
honour, and I will do whatsoever thou sayest unto me: come
