SA1. A taho vendor uses a 1.50-m uniform rod to carry his goods. At the extreme end of the
rod hangs a 40-N load. How far from the center of the rod shall a 50-N load be placed to
prevent it from rotating?

Given:
𝐹𝑎 = 40𝑁
𝐿𝑎 = 0. 75𝑚
𝐹𝑏 = 50𝑁

Find: 𝐿𝑏?

Formula: 𝐹𝑎 × 𝐿𝑎 = 𝐹𝑏 × 𝐿𝑏

Solution:
40𝑁 × 0. 75𝑚 = 50𝑁 × 𝐿𝑏
30𝑁. 𝑚 = 50𝑁 × 𝐿𝑏
30𝑁.𝑚 50𝑁
50𝑁
= 50𝑁
× 𝐿𝑏
0. 6𝑚 = 𝐿𝑏

∴The 50N load must be displaced 0.6 meters from the midpoint to prevent the rod from rotating.

SA2. A 2000-kg truck is parked 5.0 meters from one end of a bridge while a 1500-kg van is
parked 7.50 m from the opposite end. How much weight does each bridge support carry if
the bridge is 20.0 m long?

Given:
𝑊𝑎 = 2000𝑘𝑔
𝐿𝑎 = 5. 0𝑚
𝑊𝑏 = 1500𝑘𝑔
𝐿𝑏 = 7. 50𝑚
𝐿 = 20. 0𝑚

Find: 𝐹 𝑒𝑥𝑒𝑟𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑜𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑏𝑟𝑖𝑑𝑔𝑒 𝑠𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡𝑠

Formula: 𝑊𝑎/𝑏 × 𝐿𝑎/𝑏 = 𝐹 × 𝐿

Solution:
a. Bridge A [𝑊𝑎 × 𝐿𝑎 = 𝐹 × 𝐿]
2000𝑘𝑔 × 5. 0𝑚 = 𝐹 × 20. 0𝑚
10, 000𝑘𝑔. 𝑚 = 𝐹 × 20. 0𝑚
10,000𝑘𝑔.𝑚 𝐹×20.0𝑚
20.0𝑚
= 20.0𝑚
𝐹𝑎 = 500𝑘𝑔
𝐵𝑟𝑖𝑑𝑔𝑒 𝐴 𝑠𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡𝑠 𝑎 𝑤𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑜𝑓 500 𝑘𝑔.
b. Bridge B [𝑊𝑏 × 𝐿𝑏 = 𝐹 × 𝐿]
1500𝑘𝑔 × 7. 5𝑚 = 𝐹 × 20. 0𝑚
11, 250𝑘𝑔. 𝑚 = 𝐹 × 20. 0𝑚
11,250𝑘𝑔.𝑚 𝐹×20.0𝑚
20.0𝑚
= 20.0𝑚
𝐹𝑏 = 562. 5𝑘𝑔
𝐵𝑟𝑖𝑑𝑔𝑒 𝐵 𝑠𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡𝑠 𝑎 𝑤𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑜𝑓 562. 5 𝑘𝑔.
c. Total [𝐹𝑎 + 𝐹𝑏]
500𝑘𝑔 + 562. 5𝑘𝑔 = 1062. 5𝑘𝑔

∴Both bridge supports carry 1062.5 kg.

SA3. A 6-m uniform rod is acted upon by different forces at different points as shown in
the illustration. A) How much force is needed to balance the rod? B) At what point shall
this force be placed?

Given:

𝑊 𝑜𝑓 𝑟𝑜𝑑 = 4𝑁
𝐹1 = 2𝑁
𝐹2 = 3𝑁 (𝑢𝑝𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑑)
𝐹3 = 4𝑁 (𝑢𝑝𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑑)
𝐹4 = 5𝑁

Find:

𝑎. 𝑚𝑎𝑔𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑑𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑐𝑒 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑎𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑟𝑜𝑑

𝑏. 𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑐𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑎𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑟𝑜𝑑
Formula & Sol’n
𝑎. 𝐹1 + 𝐹2 + 𝐹3 + 𝐹4 + 𝑊 = 𝑚𝑎𝑔𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑑𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑐𝑒
− 2𝑁 + 3𝑁 + 4𝑁 − 5𝑁 − 4𝑁 = − 4𝑁
𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑐𝑒 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑎𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑟𝑜𝑑 𝑖𝑠 4𝑁 𝑢𝑝𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑑.

𝑏.

𝐹1 = 2𝑁, 3𝑚 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑝𝑖𝑣𝑜𝑡, 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑐𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑘𝑤𝑖𝑠𝑒
𝐹2 = 3𝑁, 2𝑚 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑝𝑖𝑣𝑜𝑡, 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑐𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑘𝑤𝑖𝑠𝑒
𝐹3 = 4𝑁, 1𝑚 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑝𝑖𝑣𝑜𝑡, 𝑐𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑘𝑤𝑖𝑠𝑒
𝐹4 = 5𝑁, 3𝑚 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑝𝑖𝑣𝑜𝑡 𝑝𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡

𝑏. 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑎:
𝐹1 × 𝐿 + 𝑊 × 𝐿 − (𝐹2 × 𝐿) − (𝐹3 × 𝐿) = 4𝑁 × 𝐿
2𝑁 × 3𝑚 + 3𝑁 × 2𝑚 − (4𝑁 × 1𝑚) − (5𝑁 × 3𝑚) = 4𝑁 × 𝐿
6𝑁. 𝑚 + 6𝑁. 𝑚 − 4𝑁. 𝑚 − 15𝑁. 𝑚 = 4𝑁 × 𝐿
− 7𝑁. 𝑚 = 4𝑁 × 𝐿
−7𝑁.𝑚 4𝑁×𝐿
4𝑛
= 4𝑁
− 1. 75𝑚 = 𝐿
∴ 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑢𝑝𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑐𝑒 𝑜𝑓 4𝑁 𝑠ℎ𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑏𝑒 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑑 𝑎𝑡 1. 75𝑚 𝑡𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑒𝑓𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑖𝑣𝑜𝑡 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑖𝑡'𝑠 𝑛𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒.

its hinges. If the amount of torque to counter its rotation is 1200.00 N.m, at what angle was
the door opened?

Given:
𝐹 = 2, 500. 00 𝑁
𝐿 = 0. 60 𝑚
𝑇 = 1, 200. 0 𝑁. 𝑚

Find: ∠?

Formula: 𝑇 = 𝐹𝑠𝑖𝑛(θ) × 𝐿
Solution:
1, 200. 0 𝑁. 𝑚 = (2500. 00 𝑁)𝑠𝑖𝑛(θ)(0. 60 𝑚)
1, 200. 0 𝑁. 𝑚 = (1, 500 𝑁. 𝑚)(𝑠𝑖𝑛 θ)
1,200.0 𝑁.𝑚 (1,500 𝑁.𝑚)(𝑠𝑖𝑛 θ)
1,500 𝑁.𝑚
= 1,500 𝑁.𝑚
1,200.0 𝑁.𝑚
1,500 𝑁.𝑚
= 𝑠𝑖𝑛 θ
4
5
= 𝑠𝑖𝑛 θ
−1 4
θ = 𝑠𝑖𝑛 ( 5 )
θ = 53. 13°
∴𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑑𝑜𝑜𝑟 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑑 𝑎𝑡 53. 13°.
