INTRODUCTION

Laser-beam machining is a thermal material-removal process that utilizes a high-energy,

coherent light beam to melt and vaporize particles on the surface of metallic and non-metallic
workpieces.

A laser is used in the process of laser cutting to vaporize materials, producing a cut edge.
despite being often utilized in industrial manufacturing applications. The mechanism behind
laser cutting is the typical use of optics to focus the output of a high-power laser. The created
material or laser beam is directed using laser optics and CNC (computer numerical control).
A commercial laser used for cutting materials uses a motion control system to adhere to a
CNC or G-code of the design that needs to be cut onto the material. The material is exposed
to the focused laser beam, which causes it to either melt, burn, vaporize, burn away, or be
blown away by a jet of gas.

The applications of laser beam machining is for welding, cladding, marking, surface
treatment, drilling, and cutting among other manufacturing processes. It is used in the
automobile, shipbuilding, aerospace, steel, electronics, and medical industries for precision
machining of complex parts.

DISCUSSIONS

1. Discuss the advantages and limitations of Laser Beam Machining.

Advantages
1. There is no direct contact between the tool and the work.
2. There is no tool wear.
3. No mechanical force on the work.
4. The heat-affected zone is very small.
5. Heat treated and magnetic materials can be welded, without losing their
properties.
6. Soft materials like rubber, plastic can be machined.
7. Extremely small holes can be machined.
Disadvantages

1. The overall efficiency of Laser machining is very low.

2. It is limited to thin sheets.

3. The life of the flash lamp is short.

4. It is not possible to remove a large number of metals.

5. The machined holes are not round and straight.

6. Not able to drill too deep holes.

7. It’s having a high cost.

8. A very low rate of metal-removing.

2. List the example of applications of the Laser Beam Machining.

• The laser beam machining process is used for making very small holes.

• Mass macro machining production.

• LBM is used in surgery.

• Selective heat treating of materials.

• Complicated welding of non-conductive and refractory materials.

3. Lists all the types of Laser Beam Machining.

• Gas Lasers

• Chemical Lasers

• Solid State Lasers

• Metal Vapor Lasers

• Semiconductor Lasers

4. What is stimulated emission of radiation in the fundamental of laser machining

process?

• As an atom absorbs a photon, its electron is elevated to higher energy levels.

• When the electron returns to lower energy state, two identical photons are emitted.

• These photons can further stimulate more atoms.

• Thusm, resulting in amplification of the light produce.

5. What is the characteristics of laser beam?

• Monochromatic - Light that has only one wavelength or frequency.

• Coherence – A fixed relationship between the phase of waves in a beam of

radiation of a single frequency.

• Directional – The beam is collimated (accurately parallel) and concentrated.

CONCLUSION
Laser beam processing is one of the most widely used processing. Innovative processing
methods manufacture complex and precise shapes with few materials Tolerance. The focus is
on laser drilling, laser cutting and laser induced bending. Execution of LBM that requires
professional know-how and operability It costs a lot. A lot of it will come out improving LBM
and its supporting processes Optimization technology with a few new things LBM research
areas. Evolution of modelling the technology has opened up new research areas for LBM
improve the performance of the LBM process.
