THE RESPIRATORY AND CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS WORKING TOGETHER

Activity Sheets in Science 9

Week 1-2

Activity 1
Key parts of the Breathing System and their Functions
Objective:
1. Identify the key parts of the breathing system using the illustration of a bunch of
grapes
2. Describe the function of each part of the breathing system

Materials: Activity sheets, textbooks and pen

Procedure:
1. Study Figure 1. The Bunch of Grapes Model, and let the bunch of grapes represent
the breathing system.

Bronchi Trachea

Bronchioles

Alveoli

Figure 1. The Bunch of Grapes Model

2. Trace the pathway of oxygen in Figure 1. Note that the air enters from the nose (nasal
cavity) and/or mouth (oral cavity) to the trachea, then moves through the bronchial
tubes to the bronchioles. After going through these passages, the air moves to Alveoli.
3. After tracing, match your work from Figure 1 to Figure 2. Identify the major parts of the
respiratory or breathing system by labeling the figure. Write your answers inside the
1. box.

Guide Questions:
1. What does each part of the “Bunch of Grapes” model represent in relation to the breathing
system?
Main stem=_____________________________
Two large branching stems=________________
Sub branches or little stems=_______________
Individual grapes=________________________

2. What will happen if one part of the system fails to carry out its function properly?

Generalization:
The air we breathe goes through the_____1______ and is filtered. This moves then into the
channel for airflow called_______2_______ in which the air is warmed, cleaned, and
moistened. And then, it travels through the______3_______ or______4________ which
serves as a passageway into the lungs. Then the air passes through two branching tubes
called _______5_________or ________6_________. These subdivide in smaller stems
many times inside the lungs, analogous to the branching pattern of grapes called
__________7________. In the terminal are tiny bubble-like bunch of structures called
_________8____________or ________9___________ which allow the gas exchange in the
lungs.

(Select your answers here: nasal passage, wind pipe, bronchial tubes, bronchi, trachea,
bronchioles, alveoli, air sacs, nose)

Activity 2
Key Components of the Circulatory System and their Functions

Objectives:
1. Identify the key components of the circulatory system through research work
2. Describe the functions of each component of the circulatory system

Materials:
Activity sheet, textbook, drawing materials (paper and pen)
Procedure:
Using the graphic organizer below, fill in the missing parts, description, and functions
to complete the entire concept. You may research in any book reference or browse
online.

Guide Questions:
1. Describe the functions of each major component of the Circulatory System.
a. Heart- ____________________________________________________________
b. Blood Vessel-______________________________________________________
c. Blood- ____________________________________________________________
2. Differentiate the four chambers of the heart in terms of their locations and functions
by completing the table below:
Four chambers of the heart Location Function
Left Atrium Upper
Right Atrium Receives blood from the body
Left Ventricle
Right Ventricle Lower Pumps blood to the lungs

3. Differentiate the three types of blood vessels.

a. Veins-___________________________________________________________
b. Arteries-_________________________________________________________
c. Capillaries-_______________________________________________________

4. What is the role of the valve in the heart?
Generalization:
The __________1_________ is the life support system that circulates vital elements
needed by the body. There are three major components of it with specific roles.
First is the ______2____ that pumps blood throughout the body. It has four chambers
with specific tasks to do: two ventricles and two atria.
Second is the ___3_____ that carries vital materials such as nutrients and oxygen.
And lastly, the _______4________ that carry the blood throughout the body. The last
component has three types of it namely: Veins, arteries and capillaries. The
_______5________carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the body while the
_______6__________carry deoxygenated blood to the heart. Meanwhile, the capillaries are
the smallest blood vessels in the body that connect smallest arteries to the smallest veins. It
is where also the actual site where gases and nutrients are exchanged.
(Select your answers from these options: heart, veins, arteries, blood, blood vessels,
circulatory system)

Activity 3
Lifestyle and its Effects to Circulatory and Respiratory Systems

Objective:
1. Appreciate the importance of a healthy lifestyle in avoiding circulator and respiratory
diseases
2. Infer how one’s lifestyle can affect the functioning of the respiratory and circulatory
systems

Materials: Activity sheets, pen and textbook

Procedure:
All four pictures in each given set depict negative ways of living. They are connected
by one common word that indicates the effect of one’s lifestyle on the functioning of the
respiratory and circulatory systems. The expected answers are illnesses that are brought
about by the negative lifestyles. Write your answers in the box provided for each number.

1.

What’s the word?

A____A

4
What’s the word?
2. H_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ N

3.

Guide Questions:

1. What idea is common in each set of pictures?

2. What are the negative lifestyles that are depicted in the pictures?
3. How can lifestyle affect the functioning of the respiratory and circulatory systems?
4. How can these negative lifestyles be changed?
5. What might happen if a person goes on with a negative lifestyle such as what was
seen in the activity?

Generalization: In paragraph form, reflect on a negative lifestyle of yours and infer effects
of this to your respiratory and circulatory systems. (5 pts.)

5
Performance Task

Objective: Conduct an information dissemination activity on effective ways of taking care of

the respiratory and circulatory systems.

Materials: Drawing and writing materials, laptop (for the power point presentation)
Procedures:
Make a poster, slogan, power point presentation, essay, or a script for a role-play. You
can also compose a poem, song, or jingle about the respiratory system. Follow the following
standards:
Poster and Slogan - Use a white cartolina and drawing
materials
Powerpoint Presentation – save it in a flash drive to be submitted to your
teacher for copying
Essay, Song, Poem, and Jingle - Your composition should have at least
three or more stanzas and should include the functions or importance of
the respiratory system. Use an A4 size of bond paper.

Your output will be assessed in accordance with the following rubric.
