I. Introductory Concept
In areas where students are acquiring basic technical skills safety begins the moment they enter the work area or at times
before reaching that work area. Your life and that of the others are more important than the job you are doing. In this lesson you
will gain knowledge about how to protect yourself by using Personal Protective Equipment or PPE

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Personal Protective Equipment is anything used or worn by a person to minimize risk to the person’s health or
safety and includes a wide range of clothing and safety equipment.
TYPE OF PPEs

 SAFETY FOR THE HEAD – Offer protection for the head and can prevent head injuries
such as Helmets, Caps, Hoods, and Hats

Frequent causes of Head Injuries:


 Falling object from above striking on the head
 Bump head against fixed objects, such as exposed pipes or beam
 Accidental head contact with electrical hazard

 SAFETY FOR THE EYES – This PPE provides protection form bright light, radiation, and
other eye injuries such as Spectacle, goggles, shield, and visor
Common causes of eye injuries:
 Chemical splashes
 Intense light
 Dust and other flying particles
 Molten metal splashes

 SAFETY FOR THE EARS – This PPEs provides protection form high sound levels such as
Ear muffs and plugs

May result to Hearing Loss

 SAFETY FOR THE NOSE – This PPE offers protection against fine dust and other
dangerous particle such disposable mask, safety mask with cartridge, and respirators
 SAFETY FOR THE HANDS – This PPE provide protection against cuts by sharp materials
or splashes from chemical such as Gloves, gauntlets, and armlets
Potential Hazards for hand:
 Skin absorption of hazardous substances
 Laceration or severe cuts
 Puncture
 Chemical burns
 Extreme temperature
 SAFETY FOR THE FEET- This PPE protect the feet against heavy weights and other feet
injuries, such as shoes, boots and rubber soles
Causes of Foot injuries:
 Falling or rolling of heavy object
 Sharp objects that can penetrate the sole
 Exposure to molten metal
 Working when electrical hazards are present

 BODY PROTECTION – This is a clothing that provides an extra layer on ones clotting
to protect one from spillage of chemicals

PPE MAINTAINANCE AND REPAIR


 Do not use PPE if it is damaged and in need of repair
 It is the responsibility of the employee to make their supervisor aware as soon as PPE becomes damaged
so that new PPE can be obtained
 Do not attempt to repair PPE
PERSONAL SAFETY GUIDLINES
These are general guidelines for all types of troubleshooting, installation and maintenance tasks. Take them seriously.
They may keep you out of a dangerous situation.
1. Never work alone in any electronics project. Always have someone to keep an eye out for any potential problem.
2. Always use protective eyewear or safety goggles when appropriate.
3. Do not go barefoot when moving tool boxes or laboratory equipment.
4. Never assume that an electrical device is safe to handle. Perform your test with the device disconnected from
the power source
5. Some tests must be connected with power applied. Be extremely cautious when performing this test.
6. Do not wear jewelry of any kind.

Personal safety at work should ALWAYS be observed. Use PPE and wear it properly to avoid unnecessary injury in
the workplace. Choosing not to wear PPE can be dangerous especially when it could save your life.
