Key defensive plays were made by Mike S who was catching for the first time in
Great Neck, Mario, Hugh, and others. Gary Z pitched a solid game.

The game was something like 10-5. Gary Z was the winning pitcher then too.
Luis ripped a liner to right that might have hurt anyone unlucky enough to catch
it. I left early so I don't have all the highlights
The Homies under the direction of Bobby were paced by bullet hits by Johnny V,
both Matts and Mario. Matt the teacher had a triple and Mark L a double. Mark
also turned some stellar double plays at second base. Gary Z had 2 hits and 2
grabs of hot smashes in addition to his pitching.
The Visitors had multi-hit games from Roy, Hugh, Gordon, Rich and Lee. Lee
made a great play on a potential Texas League Double and turned it into a
double play,
Kudos to Bobby and Jack who organized another 1 run game that ended with
the go ahead run at the plate.

On a chilly but sunny Sunday at the schoolyard the softball turnout was 17 as
the Bobbies faced the Bruces with His Johner facing Luis. The Bruces took an
early 4-0 lead as Arik homered over the fence but the Bobbies tied it at 4 with a
rash of liners from Hugh, Pete, Gordon, Bobby, Jack, Rich and Rob. The rally
gave the Judge a 12 -6 lead. The Bruces fought back powered by a drive off the
fence by Matt SP and drives by Matt the Teacher, Mario and others. Luis ripped
one over the fence.
Plays you won't see in the majors were made by Bruce who made a sweet
scoop in the first inning while playing for the other team. Someone hit a drive the
hit the chain link fence so hard it got stuck in it.
The final was 14-10 in favor of the Bobbies with the Judge picking up the W.
For those who remember Crazy Eddie, see bargain Bruce for a deal that is
insane on some special products.

On a cool, crisp, sunny Sunday, twenty two Great Neck/Port Washington softball
stars gave their fans a battle to remember. Gary Z's Homies topped Luis'
Visitors in an 8-7 thriller. Defense won the day as was clear in the top of the first
when with first and second nobody out, Fran L turned a screeching bullet into a
double play. It was the first of several gems by Fran. Other gems included a
play at the plate when a runner was out after a great relay throw from the
outfield to catcher Pete the Rock . Lennie pulled in from the west coast to make
a key stop at third to end a rally.
>
>
> The offense attacks were led by Mark L who tripled and doubled for the Home
team.
> Roy had at least 4 hits to 4 different spots for the Visitors.
>
> The pitchers also helped themselves. Gary Z winning pitcher for the Homies
doubled over the leftfielder's head. Luis homered over the fence to bring his
visitors to within one but it wasn't enough .

Chapter 1:
Under Clear blue skies and the cloud of Corona Virus.
Twenty disinfected players came together to play ball.
Necessary precautions were taken by all and the games went on.
We had many players bring their own catcher’s masks as well as
other items to protect themselves and others.
Chapter 2:
The Z’s battled the Judges (not Biblical) to 6-6 ties.
Great plays by Noah T. (Made Daddy Lee proud) and
Francis & Doug C.
Chapter 3:
The Judges pulled ahead to win the tournament 14-7.
Superior hitting by Luis, Doug, Rich L. and others.
By John
What I recall is that both teams included a number of players
who've been migrating to our game during the winter, including
Luis Avila, Rich Luzardo, Fran and others. Lee brought his son,
who I think plays varsity ball at Bayside HS. He certainly looked
and played the part. He runs faster than I can drive.
Once again, it was a very tightly contested game between his honor the judge,
and the Z-men. The Judge’s team was managed by Bobby and the Z-men
team was managed by me. It was tied at the end of nine innings but the day
was so glorious that we decided to
play two more innings. The final was 9 to 7 in favor of the Z-men.
It was great to see Ziggy on the field again after his recent surgery.
Mark Leder homered over the center fielder‘s head.
Many great plays and many great at bats but mostly a great day in the fresh air.
Please watch Team Cowboy for playing updates.
Please keep watching Luis’ videos

THEY STAGED PARADISE AND PUT UP A
PARKING LOT ON THE “B” FIELD.
So this is what I put on the great neck Park District’s Facebook
Page under their notice about last Saturday’s Concert which was
canceled.
Gary Leventhal They staged paradise and put up a parking lot!!! Pure Instant
karma. Imagine putting up a stage in the middle of a softball field to disrupt the
game that’s been going on amongst Great Neck residents for 30 years. Softball
player’s lives matter too.
I think the park district staff is fabulous and I’m always complementary, however
this time someone made a a poor error in judgment. Boo. Mark it E1, if you’re
scoring.
The “B” field #3 will not be available for a month. They were supposed to tell me
last Friday whether we could play on the middle field # 4. ( To call it a field at all
is ridiculous). I’m still waiting for an answer. If not, they wanted us to use field 1
on Steamboat, which would be an organizing nightmare. Wire you congressman.
I’m sure they could have picked another venue for this. If we had/have our usual
40 guys on a Saturday, we’d be f&4#’ed
Saturday
Lots of runs today as the Feinsteins beat the Z’s 13-7. The F’s hit
from top to bottom, big hitting from John V, Mike, Hugh, Rich,
Vinny Bats as well as Dan H, Gary W and newcomer Steve H with
his first hit in Great Neck Softball. For the Z’s, good hitting day for
Driller, Matt Sv, Harlan and newcomer Dan K, who had 3 hits
including a bomb to LCF. Blast of the day goes to Dave G, who’s
shot one hopped the fence in LCF. Great job by Jeff B who caught
the whole game and made a nice catch on a foul pop up that Fran
would NOT have caught, because he was home instead of at
home! Mark Kono made in impact defensively catching several
would be hits in SCF.
Game 16 Allenwood by Mike Spiel
I can’t believe it’s 2 years since Steve Jurist passed away, ( Aug
9, 2018) http://www.gnsoftball.com/forever-in-our-
thoughts.html)nbut I’m sure he was smiling at our back and forth
game that ended in a 12-12 tie. Big hitting day for Barry who had
6 hits including the hit that tied the game in the top of the 11th with
2 outs! Mike and Kenny had 4 hits each for the Hunts. Mario also
hit well. Driller and Matt S, also multiple hits for the Leders. Web
gems, Mike Smolens made a nice catch on a line drive, but then
was robbed by Mike Spiel in his next at bat on a hard hit one
hopper to SS. Driller not only hit well, but made several nice plays
at 3B. Bruce made a nice play on a hard hit ball to 1B.

The Bruce led Homies took leads of 1-0 in the first and 7-0 around the fifth.
Their attack was paced by Russel, Driller, Joe Sineno, Scottie and Steve who all
had multi-hit games.
The Visitors closed it to 7-5 before the Homies added 10 "tack on" runs to seal
the win. Key plays included a triple by Bobby W, a web gem by Seth at second,
and a sliding catch by Mike K. As usual more happened but I forgot it. Bulletin
just in - Steve H had 3 hits. Driller brought Jason who also played well

Gordon, Joe S. Mario and Mark L, (one of which was a triple) and many
others. For the defense Bruce made some key grabs and scoops at first.

Kudos to Bruce who produced a 12-12 tie. As I’ve written for probably the

First off, Lee goes schoolyard with the shot of the day, a hr. About the 4th pole,
after the drop.
The Hunts came back with multiple runs in the last inning to
beat the Z’s, 13-12, I think. Lee led the way with multiple hits
including a homer over the CF fence. Driller had a big hitting
day with several bombs, including a bases loaded double in
the last inning to take the lead. Ralph also had several hits
for the victors. Barry led the way for the Z’s with 6 hits. Mario
blasted a double to the fence in LF and Mike had several hits
including a ball over the fence in right and was awarded the
first base after first base.(Double)
Web gems: Lee made a great play at SS, charging in and
throwing a laser to first to get the out. Mike threw out 2
runners at home on relays from Ed and Leder. Rob made a
terrific scoop at first base saving a run. Bryan made a couple
of gems at 3b on a busy day.

Under a bright late morning late winter sun, the boys of all seasons
triumphantly extended the consecutive months streak to 115 (tempered
only by a global pandemic). The 10 a.m. game time was a departure
from the norm but it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the invigorated
group of 22. The two sides were assembled with the Z’s squaring off
against his Honor.
The home team scratched out a run in the bottom of the first led by
Hugh’s fleet feet and Leder’s hosen the ball all over the park. But their
efforts were quickly and decisively rebuked by the visitors who put a 7
spot on the board in the top of the second. Z’s return to midseason form
wasn’t enough to offset the questionable defense and timely hitting. The
rally started with the Judge, Juan and Bobby at the bottom of the order.
Around to the top and Ziggy back in form, Brian, Barry and the Big
Gerbowski lashed the balls with alacrity. Mario, Jack, and Ed all
followed suit with Rob W closing the onslaught.
The home team caught their stride and posted a four pack in the bottom
of the third. That man Leder drove in a pair before Gordon went left
fence (thanks to Lou’s swatter) for a bases clearing two bagger.
But when the visitors added two more in the fourth and then three in the
eighth, it was all over but the dancing. His Honor hurled 7 straight
scoreless innings all while getting endorsement offers from cup
companies throughout the tri-state area.
The noon whistle ended the lopsided affair but no one with the exception
perhaps of Barry had any reason to not share in the camaraderie of the
day. The streak lives.
Do I see a Great Neck Park field in the not too distant future? Stay
tuned…
By Gordon
Thank you to Gordon, Bruce , Bobby, and Jack for keeping things going.

A slight warming trend was enough for the second game of the
opening weekend to be played on the A field. The warm air was very
much needed as the springing of the clock to daylight saving time
meant a low morning sun.
From the outset, it appeared that the home Z’s didn’t get the memo
about an earlier game time as poor pitching and sloppy fielding
pitted against strong hitting and the visitors were leading 9-0 before
the crowd had settled into their seats. The hitting was balanced and
everyone on the visitors contributed. The first inning onslaught
featured strong hitting by Mike, Joe, Mark, Bryan and a red hot
Rob. The second time around, the side maker Cousin Brucie and
the Judge provided the spark. It left some of Z’s teammates hurling
vindictives!
And it looked hopeless for the home side until The ZIG came to
town. Lashing a bases clearing triple to cut the lead in half and
drawing a critical walk from the shell shocked magistrate in the
pivotal seventh inning and the naysayers were left with nothing to
say other than wow, what a great comeback. Productive hitting by
Pete, Juan, Z to help his own cause and Mario complimented the
speed and agility from the top of the lineup. The top three Seth, Jack
and Johnnie V were dynamite as the home team squeaked to a one
run lead. And it would have been more had there not been
"Rob"bery committed in right field on a sinking line drive by Rob
himself.
The visitors had one last chance to tie the score when Joe Sineno, at
one time one of the fastest guys around, failed to advance from first
to third on a crisp single. Perhaps he thought leaving the bat in the
volatile hands of Mr. Leder would be the prudent move. But it was
not to be. Mighty Marko was bested by an inside heater from the
Z, the comeback was aborted and the final score revealed a
comeback for the ages.
Opening weekend was a success with special kudos for the
Brucemeister for making such evenly balanced squads.

The Becks pounded the Leders 19-10 on a rare Sunday game at
KP5 B field. Rich Connors led the way with 5 hits and a bases
clearing bomb. Multiple hits for almost everyone on the Becks.
Bryan and Matt both hit homers, Bryan to LCF and Matt to RF. For
the Leders, Mark hit a homer to RF that is still going! Eddie
continues to impress with multiple line drive hits. Web gems start
with Doug Beck, who pitched well, but fielded his position even
better. With multiple assists on hard grounders and grabbing
several popups. Bryan, Eric and Matt turned a nice 5-4-3 dp and
Mike turned a 6-6-3 dp. He also robbed Ziggy of a hit on a one
hop liner in the hole. For the Leders, Pete made a couple of nice
plays at 2b, including a stop on a one hop liner from Kenny.
There are some random sights and scenes of Sunday’s Game attached.

It was a glorious final Saturday of the spring for the intrepid cast of
Great Neck Community Softball. Pitted against the visiting Scott’s
were the men and women of Lederville.
The visitors started well, led by Russ, Hugh and the power couple
Wandy and Marilyn. But outstanding defense thwarted the visitors. And
when the home side came to bat, the power was turned on, piling up 13
runs in four at bats. The onslaught was led by Joe S., Gary Ch., Alan,
Ben and Dee. But it was Scooter who blew the game wide open with a
laser to right center that rolled and rolled on the dry June pitch. Leder,
Dan and Steve H also provided clutch hitting.
When the dust had settled after five, the score stood 13 to 1 and it was
decided to start a second game. The squads were adjusted and this time,
it was the visitors who ruled the battlefield. The destruction was led by
Vinny (who actually showed up this time), Barry D., Bruce, Gary W. and
in a show of strength, Marilyn drove in her first run of the season.
Wow. The hits kept coming and coming. And the battery of Beck and
Beck was tremendous, both offensively and defensively.
A shaken Mark L., rediscovered his control and supported by
outstanding DEE fense, the home side was unable to plate a single
marker. Al Z. is still wondering how his smash between short and third
ended up in Gordon’s glove!
When it was all said and done, the cumulative score of the combined
games was 13 for the home side and 13 for the visitors. It was not a
conventional way to get there but after further review, it was ruled a tie
with everyone getting a participation trophy except Joe S. who refused it
on ethical reasons.
Game 34 SUN. Allenwood 6.20.21 BY GORDON
Sunday’s contest was a see-saw binary affair as the scoreboard consisted
of zeros, ones and twos. This tight contest was leaning the way of the
Huntsmen who managed to put up runs in five of the first six innings.
The offensive firepower was supplied by Lee who went yard, and Dave
Gerba who hit not one, but two triples. Bryan also lent some of his
power with a triple of his own.
COMMISSIONER’S CAUTION: The next paragraph, also written by
Gordon, contains insulting material, which the stacked Supreme Court
has allowed, citing free speech, but GNSB has not given it, ITS
EXPRESS WRITTEN consent due to the fact that the decision by the
official scorer of whether it was actually an error, has not been decided
due to the fact that there is no official scorer, hence some sensitive,
inciteful, by the author, words have been bleeped.
Joe S., obviously still reeling from Saturday’s events was
uncharacteristically out of sorts. The normally unflappable one, made a
critical #%%*% and the final &$% of the game, along with a $#! hopper
to the pitcher. He was offered a participation trophy anyway. Gordon,
Jack, Eric and Scooter combined with Pete, Gary W., and Bruce to offer
tough competition to the visiting Leders.
But when it was all said and done, Father’s day belonged to the visiting
side. Zig powered with a two run homer, while Kono, Mike S, Connors
and Ken provided a powerful top of the lineup. When Barry, Matt and
Leder in his own cause got going, the game went to the bottom of the
tenth with the visitors nursing a one run lead. It looked like the home
team would break through but the tandem of Mario, Doug B., Eric and
Bob were strong enough to hold on for the victory in this tense down to
the wire contest.
The play of the game however belongs to Dan, who worked a walk in a
critical late inning at bat to propel the visitors into the lead. It was
obvious to all that the Judge had to pitch around Dan in that spot rather
than face the wrath.
Sadly, a couple of tweaks to the calf of Scooter and the hamstring of Ed,
put a small damper on the affair. But most importantly, Dave G., who
was running like a demon all game, took a bad fall in a bold attempt to
snare a fly in right field. We all wish Dave a full recovery and hope to
see him with us as soon as possible. Get well Mr. Gerba!

In a classic Great Neck tradition, the home team Jackies swept to an early lead of eight
to nil against the visiting Lee’s by the fourth inning. Again, in another GN tradition, the
grumbling of whom made these sides that are so unfair and unbalanced could be heard
in the land. This was followed by a third GN tradition of the game ending with the
Jackies winning by one run in 11 innings. The final at bat for the Lee’s looking for one
run to tie and two runs to go ahead ended with bases loaded but no runs to be had.
This lead to the fourth GN tradition of complimentary things said about the side makers
Lee & Jack.
Hitting for 3/4 of the cycle was Vinny “Bats” Batteria. Getting clutch hits was Vinny
Bove, Corey & the aforementioned Mark Leder.
Pitching was handled admirably by Gary Z (winner with only a few whines) and taking
the close loss was Doug K.
The game was played in 2 hours and 10 minutes under an azure blue sky with a heat
index of 99 degrees.
The players stayed hydrated and fed by Gatorade and snacks brought by Bruce
(who got 3 well-placed hits and a walk).

Here are this morning's highlights. Conditions were actually pretty good. The
clouds cut down sun glare and several close calls were handled well. Please add
anything else you might remember.
When the rain finally stopped, Lee divided 18 A and B Great Neck Weekend
Softball Stars into such well matched teams that the final score was 5-4 and the
game ended with the tying run in scoring position. The Visitors gave Gary Z a 2-
0 lead in the top of the first due to excellent base running by Seth K. The Homies
got 1 in the second and 2 in the third to take the lead. Once again superior
baserunning ignited the comeback as Jon Paisner and Elmer zoomed around the
bases. Mark L made his usual assortment of super stabs to turn potential line
drive doubles into outs. Bruce and Lee turned some web gems in the middle
infield while Brian made playing outfield look easy.
Key hits by Lenny - who just flew in from LA - and Rich kept the game close.
Rookie Cliff figured out Gary Z's hesitation pitch made the score 5-3 going into
the 10th. The Visitors got one more run before Lee caught a pop up to end a
thoroughly enjoyable game.
Multi-hit performances were turned in by Hugh, Vinny Bats and a few others.
Nice job by Bruce on handling the site and time changes.

It was a beautiful early October morning. The sun was
strong and the changing leaves brilliant surrounding the
field at Kings Point Park. Equally as brilliant was the side-
making of Captain Bruce who divided up the 15 combatants
for what turned out to be a spirited affair.
But the Danimals were dogmatic and when Jeff put the
Bash in Baskin, two runners were plated and the Basher
stood on second. Couple that with Al Z.'s five hits and the
rest of the firepower unleashed by Barry D, Cliff, Joe,
Gordon and Dan, all the Brucesters could do was try to stay
close. And they did. Steve had multiple hits including a
moon shot over the right fielder's head. And Gary Ch.
stroked five hits. Hugh, Dina, Bruce and Eric also pounded
the stuffing out of the ball but in the end, the Danimals
prevailed.
10 D / 12 B in 11 innings by Bruce
The best highlight of the game was the return of Big Marty
from knee
replacement surgery. Marty K. who wore a knee brace but
didn’t seem to need it as he peppered the ball to all fields
and played a flawless first base.
From this reporter’s point of view, the best thing about this
game was the joy of playing a short-handed 7 on 8 game.
The level of cooperation needed to pull this off was
tremendous. Thanks to everyone who showed up.
By Dan
Additional highlights include a drive with an exit velocity of
200 by Bruce that nearly decapitated Dan. Jeff made a great
play on a potential Texas Leaguer by Mike G to finally get
him out. Barry starred at second base for both teams.

It was a close game for a while, when the Koch’s erupted for 10
runs in the bottom of the 8th that turned a 4-2 deficit into a 12-4
lead. They went on to beat the Z’s 15-6. 3 hit games by Marc L,
Alex, Mike G, Jack and Jon P for the Koch’s. Kono led the Z’s with
3 hits. Multiple web gems by Mike G at 3b, Alex made a great play
up the middle at SS taking away a hit. Mike S turned 3 nifty 6-6-3
double plays at SS. Lee made a terrific play on a tough hop
grounder at 2b. Matt made two nice one hop picks on errant
throws at 1b.

The visitors started off strongly with a triple by the Zig who came around to score. His
Johner with some deft fielding by Mike, held them to a lone run. The aforementioned
Mr. Spiel then grabbed his aluminum lumber and crushed a bomb to right center and as
fast or as slow as he could make it around the bases, the score was tied. Two innings
of goose eggs followed until the visitors scratched another run thanks to Ed, Bryan,
Steve and Joe, who combined to get across the go-ahead run to take a one run lead.
And in the top of the sixth, Hugh belted a seeing eye triple that plated a pair and the Z's,
up by three, were looking to pull away. However, despite solid defense by Jack, who
made a tremendous over the shoulder, the home team bats awakened. And Z started
to feel the pressure and his control became elusive. This set the stage once again for
that man about town, Mr Boxing Day himself, Mike S. who sent a deep drive down the
left field line for a triple that cleared the bases. Lou followed with his own meteor shot
and the tide had turned. Meantime, the home side displayed some outstanding fielding
of their own. Barry made two marvelous plays, one coming in on a Texas leaguer and
one ranging to his right to rob Big Dave of extra bases. And as hard as he tried to
blunder, Gordon actually caught one that he juggled four times before corralling the
elusive clincher. Juan also made an outstanding play as catcher, lunging head first to
snarl a soft foul pop. In the bottom of the tenth, the home side iced it with a four pack.
The rally was started by the Judge who was relentless, getting on base consistently.
Clutch hitting by Rob, Lee, Matt, Ed, Bruce and Gary rounded out the attack.
Meanwhile, the visitors could not solve the Judge and his court. Five consecutive
scoreless innings later, the visitors were vanquished and the scoreboard read Judge
and Co. twelve, the Z's four.
By Gordon
Attached is a video by a pickleball player and long time friend Shlomo, who was spying
nearby. My eyes are everywhere. He said you guys were very noisy. I’m sure there’s no
truth at all to that statement.
Special thanks to Gordon and Bobby who checked out the fields this weekend in their
free time and to Jack and Bruce for bringing the necessary supplies for and setting up
the makeshift field.

The streak was in peril. The forecast for the final weekend in which to
have a January game was terrible. It appeared all hope was lost and that
the no show commissioner’s failures would be front and center for all to
chastise and castigate. It would take a miracle to salvage whatever
reputation he still had. And then, through the brilliance of one man, a
man whose heroics loomed larger than life, whose essence must have
been touched by the Lord above, the reputation was saved. This man
among men, this giant among giants is none other than our own Pete
Iannicelli. known affectionately as Three-Pete (basehit basehit basehit).
Summoning up his courage, vision and fortitude, 3Pete contacted the
legendary Bruce Blattberg and informed him that Tuesday the 25th would
be the last playable day of the month. Armed with this essential
information, O Captain, My Captain promptly sent out an SOS and lo
and behold, 16 warriors answered the call.
But finding a field would be a daunting task in and of itself. The school
uses the schoolyard, so Allenwood was announced. But when the
fearless and intrepid warriors arrived, the park staff said no bueno. This
prompted man about town Jack Schonhaut to jump in his car and like a
batter out of hell, he checked and declared game on at KPP 5. So it was
written, so it shall be done.
The contest was lively and hard fought despite the conditions. The
outfield resembled the Siberian Tundra, but the gallant outfielders from
both sides, Ed, Jack, Gordon, Luis, Mark, Roy braved the frozen turf and
ice patches. Kudos as well to the extras that filled in, Rich and
Juan. The catcher's box was no picnic either but the duo of 3Pete and
Jeff handled the chore and also, the umpiring. The pitching assignments
went to Judge and Z who pitched heroically. The shortstop counterparts
were Mike and Bryan. Cousin Brucie and Mario flashed leather on the
diamond as well.
Of particular note was the participation of Rich Coy who played
marvelously and Roy Z. who stepped into the outfield for the first time
since his injury late last summer. Without them, there wouldn’t have
been a game. I guess it was too cold for Joe Sineno although I’m sure
the hot air he provides would have helped the field conditions.
Z’s visitors got off quickly in the top of the first. Bryan, who crushed
the ball all day including two homers, got the home side going. Not to be
outdone, Leder drove the ball to the wall in right. Lou stung the ball all
day and before the ice had started to melt, it was 3 nil.
The home side wasted no time getting two back. And paradoxically, the
hitting star of Your Johner’s visitors was the same man that we all owe
the credit to for getting the game scheduled. Pete was 4 for 6 including
a triple and a home run. In fact, when the visitors were down by two
going into the bottom of the sixth, it looked like it was going to be a nail
biter. Sorry! Not today! 14 batters came to bat and when the inning
was over, 10 runs had crossed the plate. The lineup of Mike, Ed, Mario,
Pete, Roy (who also had a homer), Jack, Rich and His Johner proved
unstoppable. The visitors clawed back courtesy of a Home Run by
Lederhoisen but the home side wound up with a stunning 14-9 victory.
At this point in the season, it is a toss up between Brian and Pete for
MVP. But really credit goes to all the guys who had the guts, the
fortitude and will to preserve a streak that is now over ten years.

The Z’s beat the Hunts 14-7 in a shortened game. Led by Gordon
and Mike with 3 hits and multiple bombs, the Z’s took a
commanding lead early and never looked back. The Hunts tried to
stay close with Luis hitting lasers all over the field. Plenty of web
gems around. Lee made a sparkling play ranging up the middle to
rob a hit. The Judge snared a liner back up the middle. Mario also
grabbed a hot liner at 2b, leaping about 3 inches to make the play.
Ed made a nice running grab in LF to turn an extra base hit into
an out. Jeff actually wen to Rf for a base hit in a 6 run inning for
the Z’s. Gary hit line drives all day, but he was Seaver like on the
mound with no walks. Roger had a nice day at the plate with a
couple of hits.
Unfortunately the game was cut short due to the frozen ground
melting and creating a mud puddle all over the left side of the
infield.
The gutsy visitors with the brandisher of Justice on the hill, started off with a two spot.
Ed, Mark L., Mario and Pete, who had three hits over the day, led the charge. Juan,
Dan and His Johner plated a run an inning later and it looked like the home town Z's
would be left in the rear view mirror. But then an unprecedented power display off the
bat of Lou changed things. He crushed a drive that almost went into the basketball
basket at the far end of the park. And on his next at bat, he blasted a drive to the
deepest part of center field, the apex of the Polo Grounds, behind the Yankee Stadium
monuments. And just like that, the rest of the team caught fire as well. Ed I., Hugh,
Mike G., Rob, Roger, Gary and Bruce supplied the power and before long, the home
side was one up. If not for the courage of the fearless Mark Leder who made two web
gems on screaming line drives to shortstop, the flood gates would have opened.
And it was that same courage that saw the visitors plate four and take back the lead.
That man about town, the Chiropractor of dreams, Mark L., nearly broke the home sides
back. But not so fast said the home side as they crossed the Delaware to regroup. And
then it came down to the bottom of the 12th. Down by a run, the home side sent up the
bottom of the order, the hapless Gary Z., who stunned everyone including himself,
squared up and lined a single. From there, Ed and Hugh followed with hits which set
the stage for Big Lou who crushed a drive into the Left Center Field Gap, and the
redcoats were dispatched by the loyal Americans.

The final weekend in February saw a raucous battle between the home
side Johnnies against the visiting ZZZ’s played at the Schoolyard of
dreams.
The visitors got off first when Seth K launched a shot that landed just
inside the right field foul line before curling into the corner. Turning on
the jets, the fleet feet touched them all and the visitors led by one.
The Johnnies were led by Jon Zuck, who responded in kind with a
double, ultimately scoring on an RBI drive by Hugh before Mike Sp.
uncharacteristically was called on strikes by Bruce which led to a
pleasant discussion.
And then deuces went wild. For the next five consecutive innings, the
ZZZ’s scored two runs in each inning as they bolted out to a large
lead. The hitting onslaught included everybody from Jack, Mike G,
Bryan, Vinny and Bobby, with highlights being provided by Steve H.
who drilled one off the fence and Ed R who lashed line drives all over
the park. But the most impressive at bat of the day belonged to Luis,
who smoked a ball into the dancing ladies of Korea, the farthest part of
the park. Luis also barely missed a homer later in the game, instead
settling for a two-bagger. Mark L. exhibited his own brand of offensive
prowess with he crushed a triple.
And despite the high scoring, there were a number of defensive
gems. Mark L., catching foul pops, Jon Z., in front of the water fountain
but the catch of the day was made by Vinnie who ranged to his left and
snagged a line drive in front of the wall in Right Center with the bases
loaded.
But the home side refused to surrender. Led by their own Z’s, Jon and
Roy, and supplemented by Juan, they pieced together a few runs to keep
the visitors within sight, with each of them getting at least three
hits. The biggest hit came in the bottom of the eighth when Jon blasted
his second homer of the day, a three run shot to cut the lead to two.
A call by umpire Magoo allowed the visitors to tack on a run to make it
a three run game but then the unthinkable occurred. With runners on
first and second and one out, the Judge bounced a one hopper to the
pitcher, who appeared flummoxed and instead of going to second for the
sure game ending double play, he threw to first allowing both runners to
advance. Clutch hitting by Jon and Hugh, and tough at bats by Mike Sp
who smoked a double and the great Gerbaski, and the table was set for
Gordon to tie the game. And he promptly delivered a clutch two out
game tying single. The ball don’t lie!
And there the game ended as the clock ran out. Kudos to the side
makers and the players who braved the thirty-degree temperatures and
the swirling winds. Forward March!

Game 8: SATURDAY 3.26.22 KPP5 BY GORDO
Allow me to begin the weekend highlights but first apologizing for the
inaccurate highlights from last week, which were labeled, It’s Finally
Springtime. As we all know, our games are played at 9 a.m. and end
approximately 11 a.m. Since the spring equinox didn’t happen until
11:33 a.m. it is obvious that the game was the final game of winter, not
the first game of spring. In the interior of the highlights, the description
springlike was used. This is accurate. The rest is flat out wrong.
Now that we have corrected this delusion, let it be known that Saturday
March 26, 2022 was the first game of spring. And it was spectacular.
I’m not referring to the weather conditions, which were overcast and
seasonably cool at KPP 5, but rather the competition itself. And the
credit for that goes to the Commander of the High Seas, Captain Bruce,
who pitted twelve against twelve with the visiting Z’s facing off against
the home side Lou’s. An assist goes to Mike S.
The bottom of the first saw Fran drive one to left center for a double.
Then the veteran tandem of L’s; Lee, Lou and Leder provided offensive
destruction. Coupled with the smooth hitting of Bryan, Ed and Brian,
the home side plated two to take the lead.
The visitors were baffled by Lou’s dazzling antics and started with four
goose eggs. And Lou aided his own cause by blasting a bases clearing
triple to put the home side up by five.
But slowly the worm turned and the visitors got one on the board. Rich,
playing on a troubled wheel, sent a triple to the left side and was plated
on an infield out. The following inning, Eric the U went deep to left
center and he came around to score, cutting the lead to 5-2.
And then the following inning, Rich once again delivered a three bagger
which drove in two and when he scored on the next at bat, it was all
even at five.
At this point, the Zmeister was finding his groove and held the home
side scoreless for five straight innings. But it would not have been that
way if Dave hadn’t made two sensational catches, first on Leder’s bomb
to left that saw a Gerbastaire pirouette and then a shoe string catch on a
rocket hit by Bryan.
Emboldened by the dramatics, the bottom of the order, which hit the ball
squarely all day, gave the visitors their first lead of the game. It was
Steve, Roger and the Gary’s, W and Z who led the charge.
But one good turn deserves another and Jeff, Matt, Dan and Bruce
delivered the tying run in the bottom of the ninth.
But as fate would have it, one of the most popular guys in GNSB history
delivered the blast that would bring home the winning run. The writer
wishes to recuse himself from mentioning who that player is.
One final note; some suggested that this game was really a tale of two
Spiels; one whose absence hurt his team, the other’s did not. Sadly, Jon
tweaked his shoulder on a relay throw. And as much as he tried to battle
through it, he made the prudent decision to withdraw. And it was likely
that his missing bat was the real difference. Conversely, in the bottom of
the last inning, when Mike abandoned his team, Mike G. made the play
of the game. With one out and the tying run on first, a ball was laced up
the middle. Mike G., who bravely volunteered to take over the shortstop
responsibilities, laid out and snagged the hot smash and flipped it to
second for the force. A bedazzled home side could muster no further
resistance and the contest went to the Z’s 7-6.
The visitors tried to respond but the defensive work of Jon gunning out a
runner at the plate dashed all hope for the beleaguered Z’s. Despite four
anemic hits by Vinnie, Bobby sending a shot deep to left and Brian
hitting a round tripper, the home side was too good. They piled on runs
in 8 of the next 9 innings, including an eight spot and when the asphalt
had settled, the home side walked away with a lopsided 26-10 victory.
Next week is April and that means 8pril…all games will start at 8 a.m.
Highlights.

Game 24 FRIDAY 5.27.22 ALLENWOOD BY GORDO
Great Neck Softball Weekend Softball was treated to a rare four day Memorial Day
weekend extravaganza. Owing to huge demand, a Friday game was added at
Allenwood Park. The field conditions were perfect; the weather was cool and overcast
as the visiting Rodgers faced off against the mighty Z’s.
The game started with Mike Smolens belting the first of his three hits. Hugh, Alex and
Kono kept hope alive for Barry, Jack, Leder and Mario. When the dust had settled, the
visitors had plated three.
The home side was led by Ziggy, who blasted four hits. His first inning single and
subsequent offensive behavior by Ed, Bryan and the Great Gerbaski, who slammed
three hits himself, led to a run.
The bottom of the order came up for the visitors and Mark K., Jeff, Roger and Bobby
answered with a run of their own, putting the visitors ahead by three heading into the
bottom of the second. From there, the pace slowed down immeasurably as both Roger
and Z seemed to lose their compasses and the first three innings dragged on for close to
an hour.
Seemingly lulled into a somnambulistic state, the home side shook off their doldrums
when Leder came in and found the plate and went Memorial Day wild by plating 10
runs over the next three innings. The major offense came from Bryan, who shook off
the cobwebs from his bat and bashed a bases clearing triple to start the rampage.
The home side then handed the ball to the screwball knuckleball throwing Lou, who
promptly dispatched the visitors with holiday efficiency. The visitors did get 3 across
in the ninth and one in the tenth but when the curtain came down on game one, the
home side basked in a hard fought 12-9 victory.

MONTH 131 IS IN THE BOOKS!!!
AS A TRIBUTE TO QE2’S 70TH YEAR ON THE THRONE,
MANY ACTIONS AND DESCRIPTIONS ARE TAKEN FROM
WORDS WITHIN { QUEEN ELIZABETH}
There is an old saying, let sleeping dogs lay. Well, this adage applied to an animated
Lou who promptly sent a double deep to right center that plated two. And an inning
later, the big Dog went yard, driving in three. A veritable one man wrecking crew.
Staking himself to an 8-0 lead after two, the visitors loaded the bases. But once again
were denied by the defensive prowess of the second baseman, the aforementioned
Alan Z. By making a tough grab deep in the hole, the visitors were stymied again. And
his valuable play was not just with the glove. Alan drove in two the following at bat with
a crisp single to left center. The other participants in the three consecutive four run
innings included; Russ, Hugh, Ryan (who crushed them from foul line to foul line), Ben,
Gary W. and Danimal.
Staked to a 12-0 lead after three, the visitors regained their composure and started
strafing bombs of their own. Harlan hit a blast in the fourth and then again in the sixth.
Joe, who is finally living up to the moniker Super Joe, drilled the ball with acumen. And
as the game headed to the final innings, the lead was cut in half. The balanced hitting,
a result of the skill displayed by the likes of Scott, Johnny V.,Juan, Jeff Bashthem, Barry,
Steve and Cousin Brucie.
The visitors fought furiously and cut the lead to five but when the home side tacked on a
run, the visitors were out of ammo and succumbed to their fate. Final score 13-7.

Game 34A SATURDAY 6.25.22 KPP5 by Gordon
The June 2022 Summer Saturday contest at KPP 3 saw the visiting Johners
squaring off against the home side Z's. The weather was warm and the skies
were clear which can make right field an adventure. Or perhaps the high sun
best serves as an excuse for shoddy play (the author of this missive shall leave it
to the reader to choose). The teams played nine on nine with three outfielders, a
lot of room out there.
>
> Z started with pinpoint control and set the potent visitors down without a run
for the first two innings. While on the home side, Lou was hawking his wares,
delivering a two run double on the way to a three run opening frame. And it
would have been more had not Lee made a sensational grab in Center Field.
>
> The top of third saw the visitors find their groove. Mr. Leder slammed a double
which plated a pair and after three, the score was tied at 3. When the visitors
plated a solo run in the fourth and took the lead, it appeared the home side, who
went three consecutive scoreless innings as the Judge bedazzled by wheeling
and dealing (homage to Clyde) was in for a long game. But not so fast. The
hitting shoes came on and the home side exploded for five in the bottom of the
fifth. You don't score five without balanced hitting and that was the case here.
Jon Z., Gordon, Mike G, Lou, Bryan, Jon S., Z and Bobby all contributed to the
outburst with the big hits coming from Lou and Mike G.
>
> Once the hitting began, it didn't stop. The visitors followed the five pack with a
deuce and two three run outbursts to salt the game away. The Jon's Z and S
were the master blasters and Z got into the act as well with an rbi single and a
sac fly.
>
> The visitors did their best to stay close with Gerbs driving in one and Matt
platting a pair. But when Big Bryan went yard, there was little doubt who would
win. Final score Z's 16, Johners 8. Kudos to those who lashed three or more
hits; Matt R., Jon Z. and Gordon.

Prologue by Gordon:
The July fourth weekend is a wonderful time; barbecues, family
time, fireworks, all the trimmings of our wonderful country’s glory.
Yet that being said, it also is the hottest time of the year, a time
that tries men’s souls, particularly those that don’t sit on the
sidelines, which dare to brave the elements and take to the field.
In many ways, the July fourth Ironman weekend resembles all the
major athletic challenges; Triathlon, Iditarod, climbing Mount
Everest. And it wouldn’t happen without leadership. It’s fitting as
we reflect on those who gave their all this independence day, that
we acknowledge our own Washington, Grant, Pershing,
Eisenhower, the fearless Gary Leventhal who led us through the
Pandemic until finally succumbing to the dreaded virus. I am
happy to report he is on the mend in large part due to the tender
guidance and friendship offered by the gracious Joe Sineno.
**************************************************************************
COMMISSIONER’S NOTES:
1.NOT SURE WHAT GORDON’S BEEN TAKING, BUT WHILE OTHERS WERE
CELEBRATING OUR NATION YESTERDAY HE MUST HAVE BEEN CELEBRATING
HIS HALLUCINATION.
The Beck’s played admirably in defeat. Gary W., Dan, Steve, John V.,
Jack, Jason, Ed H, Bobby and some left center fielder who made one of
the easiest catches in left center field into one of the most difficult. The
befuddled viewers chose to call it the catch of the year as he slid his
glove under the ball just before it touched down, tugged the ball into the
air and the while sliding and twisting, secured the catch with his bare
hand!
The hero’s for the Leder’s were the aforementioned Mark L.,
who blasted a bomb bursting in air for a solo four bagger,
and Zig who lashed missiles all over the field like a patriot.
Other contributions came from the minutemen; Vinnie,
Kenny, Barry, Bruce, Lee, Doug and Gary W.
Ryan, Bryan, Ed I., and Hugh all played valiantly but this
fourteen inning defensive struggle went to the Leder’s by
the count of 6-3. As Mark was able to best the Judge even
though between them there were 20 goose eggs! Great job
by the side makers; Lee and Bob.
KPP 3 saw their position vanquished which only left the KPP
5 fourteen to preserve the honor and integrity of the GNSB.
And it wasn’t easy. Under blistering heat and savage sun,
the seven on seven combatants had to man multiple
positions with honor. And so they did. The fourteen who
belong in this elite class of warrior, the Seal Team Six of
Great Neck, the Green Berets of the diamonds, were Brian,
Ed.I, Mike G., Ed H., Dave Gerbs, Gary Z., Bobby, Ziggy,
Gordon, Vinny, Bryan, Mark L., Gary Ch., and Steve with an
assist from Gary W. who escaped the carnage of KPP 3 and
courageously joined his brothers in their quest for freedom
from oppression.
It looked like the visiting Z’s were off and running until Gary
Ch., (there’s that man again) made a fabulous over the
shoulder grab in Right Center field to limit the damage to
two runs. The home side responded with a deuce of their
own and it would stay that way until the bottom of the third
when the fireworks began. Gary Ch. complimented his
strong defense with bruising offense and Leder went yard to
put the home side up by three. And then the hitting shoes
really came out. The home side sent up 10 in the bottom of
the fourth and from there it was a Boston Tea Party at the
expense of the Red Sox fan on the hill. The home side broke
the scoreboard and when the warriors peeled themselves
off the field, the final score was a rollicking 24-6.
But the players weren’t done. Many stuck around for extra
batting practice!!! PRESERVE THE UNION AT ALL COST!!!
Game 38B MONDAY 7.4.22 KPP3 by Gordon
Monday’s game was the one that separated the wheat from
the chaff. A beleaguered Bruce, left to protect old glory on
his own, attempted to make two games. Unbeknownst to
him, and what seems to be a curious pattern of late, the 33
signups dwindled to 29. This is a disturbing trend as it was a
glorious holiday and the fields at KPP were in marvelous
condition. One can only speculate on why the showing was
this meager.

As for the game, the home side Z's more closely resembled the bad news bears. They
could neither pitch nor hit nor field. Not even the return of the Pirozzis could stem the
onslaught. Solid hitting by Joe, Driller, Ch., Hugh, Al, Jeff and Bruce led to steller
offensive production. But it was newcomer Seth who blasted hits all over the field like a
seasoned pro. The game was so one sided that the affair was called after Z's
beleaguered side had given up 18 runs in 3 + innings.
A second game commenced and Gordon took to the hill in the hope of returning
normalcy to the game. And it was a much more evenly matched contest. The six inning
dual saw the visitors continue their strong attack but then the home side got it going
behind hitting from Ed. I., Adam, Cliff, Barry and Gary W. After three the score was
deadlocked. But the visitors would not be denied and posted a four spot lead once
again by balanced hitting from all quarters. The second game final was a reasonable
8-4 affair.
The scoreless first two frames suggested that this would be a grueling low scoring
contest. And for the first eight innings it was. In the third, new comer Chris, clad in
sneakers, unleashed a two rbi double. Kenny kept the home side close with a rope
down the first base line that plated a pair. The lead by the Bombers was extended
when Ryan went yard with a two run blast. The score after eight was 5-3 in favor of the
Bruce's visitors. Solid if not spectacular play was exhibited by Ziggy who hit well all
game, Gary Ch. who makes it happen week after week, Kono, Mario, Pete, Roger and
Bruce. On the home side, Barry, Ed, Vin, Jack, JRo, the G's W and Z and Bobby were
stalwarts.
But at the end of the day, it was one man who took over the game. The aforementioned
Alex complemented his stellar defense with a three run honey-moonshot (his wedding is
just days away) and a grand salami that collected some primes rbis and busted it open
for the visitors. This 7 RBI explosion propelled the visitors to a stunning 18-6 13 inning
victory. Leder finally gave way to Z and then Vinchenzo but by then the damage had
been done. On the visitors side, Roger pitched the final inning in a non save situation.

Defensive play improved and in the second, there were fine plays on both sides.
First Ben made a fabulous grab on a certain extra base drive. Not to be bested,
Jason made an over the shoulder grab in left that would have reached the fence.
The third inning also saw fine defensive play. The fourth frame saw each side
plate three. Balanced hitting by Cliff, Steven, Bobby and late comer Mike led the
visitors charge. For the home side. Gary Ch., Ben, Roger and Bruce rallied their
side and after a scoreless fifth, it was a one run game. The top of the fifth
provided defensive heroics by Ed and Ben. While the visitors were treated to a
Doug Beck three pitch three out inning.
In the seventh, the visitors found their groove. Led by Mike, who blasted a 2 rbi
triple and Joe who followed with his own three bagger, the visitors scored five.
The home side tried to keep pace with Harlan lashing a two run double but strong
pitching and defense stemmed the tide. Each side scratched a run in the later
innings but the final after 10 was Becks 14, Bruces 9.

It looked as if this would be a runaway freight train but the visitors put together a rally of
three runs, cutting the margin to 16-11 and filling the bases. And then the play of the
game was made by an unexpected source playing an unexpected position. When a
screaming liner was launched to right center field, it looked like a Grand Slam was
coming and with it a tight score. But Gary W. had other ideas. Ranging far to his right
from his right field position, in a full sprint, Gary extended his glove over his head and
backhand and snared the line drive in the very edge of the webbing of his glove. The
ball was not even fully secured as he pulled it down onto his thigh to trap the pill and
end the inning. Although Bobby drove in two the next inning, Ben plated two before
Barry went yard and it was all over save the dancing. Other outstanding defense was
provided by Dan on a line drive, Barry in Right Center and Seth at second base.
When it was all over, the final score was Cousin Brewsky's Marauders 22 Roger's Merry
Band of Misfit Toys 15. As the game ended, little did anyone know that this very field
would be the scene of a Vinny like Home Run Derby theft.
LEE vs ZEE. No relief. THE LEES WIN 13-12. Gerber with a walk
off in the bottom of the ninth. The Lees scored 6 runs in the
bottom of the 8th to break open what was a one run tightly fought
game. The Zees came back with 7 In the top of the ninth to tie it
12-12 and then Gerber got the hit to knock in Vinny to win it.
Today’s defense was very solid all around. Ed H and Seth K made
multiple running web gems in the outfield. Jack also made a very
fine running catch.
Offensively Matt R bashed a big 2 run homer and Joel smashed a

(Commishugana’s Note: For the past several weeks I’ve been asking everyone not to
sign on for games unless 100% sure of playing. On days when we have to restrict the number of
players, because there are too many for one game and too few for two, guys are being closed out
when spots are available because players cancel too late or don’t show up at all. This is not
right. Several have asked me and the board to enact measures and penalties for guys who take
their names off at the very last minute or don’t show. I’m reluctant, but I think we might have to,
since the situation hasn’t improved. I’ll keep you posted.)
The top of the first saw the visiting Z’s plate a pair. The one and two
hitters, Ryan and Ed H., provided the offensive production. Each
pounded a triple to lead the charge. The home side responded
immediately. After two were out, a base and balls and then some timely
hitting by Lee and Kono, sprinkled with some seeing eye base hits and
the home side Becks were up by one.
Doug B. bedazzled on the hill and threw nine consecutive scoreless
innings. Meanwhile, the home side added single runs in the four of the
next five innings to pull away. Seth, Bryan, Hugh, Steve F., Matt ,
Roger, Gary W. and Dan all contributed to the incessant offensive
behavior. And it would have been more if not for some outstanding
defense by Mike G. who started a 5-2 double play to thwart one rally.
And Gary Ch. continued his fine all around play. It should be noted that
last week, he was 6 for 6. Somehow that eluded last week’s highlight
author. Ch. and Ed H made sterling catches in the outfield. And a Bryan
to Gordon peg caught a runner trying to score.
Finally Steve F. was brought into the contest to put out the fire. His
three inning performance of giving up one run over three innings was
good enough to earn him his first save. Final score Beck/Feinstein 7
Z’s 3.
Game 68 SUNDAY: ALLENWOOD 10.16.22 BY GORDON
A fine mist hovered above Allenwood Park as the GNSB
gladiators took to the pitch. Starting for the visitors was
Leder. He was pitted against the always stylish Eric the U.
It should be noted that the park staff did a fabulous job of
turning the infield into a pristine venue after an evening rain
and abuse by BMX bikers. Combining the perfect field with
some early morning sun and it was a field of dreams.
After a scoreless first, the visitors deuced the home side. Matt’s seeing
eye single and a bloop by Gary W. sparked the rally. The visitors added
one in the fourth as Bryan lashed a double, one of his many hits.
The home side staked their claim when Kono blasted a drive that barely
escaped the grasp of Matt in Right Center. And after five it was a 3-2
game. It looked like it would be a nail biter and when the home side
scored two, the game was now one run in favor of the home side.
And then a disastrous home seventh for the visitors who turned from
slick fielders to circus clowns. All that was missing was the carnival
music. Among the batters who participated in the rally were, Zig,
Kenny, Mario, Jack, Gary Ch., Pete, Roger and Steve.
The visitors tried to get back into the game when Barry crushed a drive
to deep center field. But the home side responded immediately with
Kono blasting a drive down the left field line for a two run double.
When the red dirt had settled, the U’s emerged victorious over Leder and
the Z (who blasted a couple of hits) by the score of 10-5.

The contest pitted the stylings of Gary Z. vs the tandem of Lou and
Steve F. And the visitors didn’t waste any time. Early morning fielding
woes combined with Rich L.’s torrid hitting and Mark Leder’s right field
bomb allowed the visitors to plate a handful. The home side responded
with a three pack with Jon Spiel providing the key two rbi hit. In the top
of the second, Lou pulled the string on Vinny and the befuddled batter
could only turn around and wonder what went wrong. In the bottom of
the second the home side got it going. Hugh, Gordon with a two rbi
double, Lou, Rich C., Lee, Matt, Andy, Steve H and Ed put up a five
spot of their own.
In the top of the third, Leder hit a bomb and two crossed the dish. The
home side responded but defense took over and when Bryan caught an
infield fly with the fly rule in effect, it looked like the bases packed
opportunity would go by the board. But J. Spiel caught the befuddled
shortstop staring into space and scored. And when Matt made a fabulous
backhand catch in the top of the fourth, it looked like it was all systems
go for the home side. But the bottom of the fourth saw a 5-2-5-6-2-5-6
double play and a big inning was averted. Further defensive gems
followed. Eric made a terrific catch in right field; Andy made a tough
stab of a sharply hit ball for a force out. But the defensive play of the
year candidate was turned in by Bryan when he took the relay throw and
turned and threw a stunning strike from short left field right into Eric’s
glove at home. When the ball left his hand, everyone was thinking that’s
an extra base for the other runners. The reality was far different. A
stunned Lee was out by ten feet.
The tide started to turn when Adam hit a one hopper off the LF fence
and then Brian started to announce his presence. First he made a critical
grab in left with the bases loaded and then he drove in two with a triple.
But each time the visitors got a couple, the home side would answer
right back. So going in the 11th and final inning, the visitors trailed by
the slimmest of margins. And it was then that the normally reliable
oversized glove of big Lou went on strike. Between Z’s sac fly, Brian
and Vinny driving in runs, the visitors ended their innings with the same
five spot they started with. The bottom of the 11th saw a spirited rally
fall short. The final score Z’s 16 – Lou/Steve 13.
There is a tradition in our game that when someone has a birthday, they
announce it to all the participants and buy some sort of goodies to share.
It is camaraderie and it is good. And everybody does it and it is good.
And if there are but a few remaining items, they are distributed and that
is good.
But someone poked tradition in the eye. Someone said, I will not tell
everyone what I have brought and if by chance they should see it, then I
will quietly tell them. But if they do not, I will slither away early and
abscond with the nearly full container. And bring it back to my house to
re-gift for the next party. So despite all that happened on the field,
Sunday’s game will always be remembered as the Sleazing of the
Munchkins game.
I assure you dear reader, that it affords me no solace to report this to you.
I can only pray that the holiday spirit will embrace those among us who
take the miracle of life for granted.

CONSECUTIVE MONTHLY STREAK IS EXTENDED TO
MONTH 136. KUDOS GUYS!!!
SEE ATTACHMENT FOR PHOTO OF THE STREAKERS.
Credit to Luis’s daughter for taking the photo.
The sanguine affair pitted the relentless stylings of Luis who was relieved in the late
innings by Fireman Ralph vs. the time tested guile of the Judge. The visitors scratched
a run across in the top of the first. Zig, Joe S. (who was 6 for 8 before the game
started), Lou and Leder were the culprits. Two goose eggs started the home side's turn
but then the bottom of the third and the home side went hog wild, sending 14 to the dish
and plating an 8 spot. The hitting went right through the order. Jon P., followed by
Vinny, Rich L., Bryan, Gordon, Jon S., Jack, Mike M, Gary W. and his Johner all
contributed. But the big blast was provided by the always stylish Eric The U. who
crushed a bases clearing three bagger.
The visitors did make a game of it though. Scratching single runs in two more innings
and then rallying for four in the eighth. The offensive behaviour was spearheaded by
Ralph and Lou who each blasted two baggers. This cut the score to 9-7 in favor of the
home side. But this would be as close as it got. The bottom of the eighth saw the home
side respond with a four pack of their own. The homies added a couple of more and the
final tally was His Johner's homies 15 - the Lou/Ralphs 7.
Monday Game 2 KPP5 1.2.23 A-GORD-ING TO GORDO
Monday the 2nd saw the diamond dogs back at KPP 5. The field was prepared by the
Park staff and the boys played an 11 on 11 contest which saw Mr. Lou leading the
visitors against Ralph's Homeboys. Kudos to the side makers who had to deal with
multiple controversies. Some players who signed up didn't show. While others had the
temerity to simply show up without signing up at all. This led the always respectable
Joe S. to play the game under protest (Joe was 6-8 again, before the game started,
thereby getting into the highlights). Unfortunately, he protested something else later
which negated his earlier protest and rendered the contest unprotestable.
The visitors led by Jon Z., Ed I., Rich, Lou and Mike opened the scoring. The home
side answered back with a deuce in the fourth and a four pack in the fifth. The
offensiveness was provided by the always offensive stylings of Mark Leder who crushed
shots all over the yard. Also adding to the mayhem was Big Rich Connors who smoked
clinchers with a vengeance. And when it looked like the home side was going to run
and hide, the visitors pulled the proverbial Dikembe Mutumbo and said, not in my
house. The valiant visitors opened the floodgates and put up four spots in the seventh
and eight innings. The vicious onslaught was highlighted by Jon Z, Rich, Lou and Mike,
each of whom hit moonshots all over the field leaving a beleaguered Roy Z. covered in
mud as he dove in vain for the projectiles. Roy did make a sensational grab though to
put out the fire and keep the visitors within striking distance.
As the home side come up in the bottom of the last inning down by two, it looked like it
was all over save the dancing, until:
Runners on first and second. No out, home side down by two. Zig coming to the plate.
Here's the pitch. An outside fastball and Ziggy smashes a drive to deep Right Field.
He's putting on the afterburners. Will there be a play at the plate? Here's the throw!
SAFE! A three run walk of Knock and Ralph's Raiders win! Look at that crowd of
happy players swarming Ziggy as he touches home! What a game!
See everyone next week. Or at least those that aren't sitting on their brains in God's
waiting room.

The 16 lucky attendees were divided into two groups of eight with
the batting team supplying one fielder. The visitors were led by
His Johner. The home side's hurler was vexatious stylings of
Gary Z. The visitors stranded a pair in the top of the frame. The
home side did not, plating a pair. They were led by Jack, John V.,
Lou and Mario. The two sides each scratched a run in the second
and the home side put up a solo run in the third. The visitors
finally got it going in the top of the fourth. Leder's opposite field
double and Steve F.'s big time blast led the charge and just like
that, the visitors were nursing a one run lead.
The home side put up 2 runs in both the fifth and sixth inning and
as time started to grow short, it looked like it was going to come
down to the wire. But if you took the visitors and got 12 runs, you
would have been wrong. In the bottom of the eight, an
overpowering display of batting prowess emanated from the home
side. The 10 run barrage was a byproduct of unfettered team
offense. Lou got it going with a mammoth blast to straight away
center. You know it was a moonshot as Lou sauntered around
without a throw. Then the jacked up stylings of Gary W. came to
pass as he launched a blast over a beleaguered Left fielder in the
person of Mark Leder who could only stare in amazement. Pete,
Jon S. also contributed and Jack, in the leadoff role, crushed five
hits. The only one who didn't contribute offensively was Double
Play Z. And a good thing too or the home side might still be
batting. Final score: Z's 18 - Judge 5.

February and the warriors of the diamond found themselves on the battle and
weather hardened confines of Allenwood Park. At the outset of play, the field
was supplying a multitude of bounces and was eerily reminiscent of the
schoolyard in that regard. But thank goodness for the percipience of Captain
Bruce and within a half hour's time, it was a field of dreams. The wind abated,
the sun shining brightly and the temperatures into the 40's, in short, a perfect
day for a game.

The contest pitted the great leader of virtue, his Johner against the irascible stylings of
the Zmeister. And the opposing hurlers bedazzled batter after batter as the first three
innings were a series of goose eggs. Of course, this stinginess could not have
happened without defensive genius. In the top of the second, the bases were loaded
when Rich Connors, playing first base, made a sensational play. He stepped on first for
out number one and then pegged home where Gary "the glove" W. made a fabulous
grab and tag. And then in the top of the third, Steve H. snarled a sinking line drive in
short center field that stymied another potential rally.
The visitors plated a run in the top of the fourth, led by Rich L's triple. But Big Lou said
I'll call that and in the bottom of the fourth, he laced an rbi double to tie the score.
With the score tied, the defensive stylings of the Spiel brother who still participates
squelched another rally. Jon S made a heroic stab on a grounder, stepped on second
and fired to first. 6-6-3 if you're scoring at home. But the visitors finally showed life by
scoring single runs in the 6th, 7th and 9th on respective rbi singles by Messrs Gerb,
Matty, and Seth. And with the defense and pitching on lockdown, it looked like the
Judges were safe. It was that way until the bottom of the tenth.
Barry slashed an opposite field double driving in a run and with the go ahead run now
on first, and Gary W. in the box, the play of the game occurred. With a full count and
two outs, the runners were on the move. W hit a soft liner that looked certain to drop
between short and left when Jon Z. broke the Kings Point Speed limit and made a
diving lunge and came up with the catch. Crisis averted (except for the ticket he
received from the cops).
With the visitors leading by one going into the bottom of the 12th and final inning, the
ball was handed to fireman Eric the U. who coincidentally (?) was wearing a Yankee
road uniform with the number 42 on the back. Now I know that many of you might
recognize this number as that of the great reliever Lindy McDaniel but I'm sorry, he wore
number 40. But if you choose to research, the number 42 belonged to a certain all time
great and of course that would be Eric the U who promptly put out the fire and earned
the save.
