Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can continue
your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and
discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step as you
discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This will
tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to ask your
facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the end of
each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are
provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also provided to our
facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best help you on your
home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this SLM. Use
a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And read the instructions
carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks in this
module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at our own pace and time. It is how to do basic constructions
in geometry using straight edge and compass. The focus is exposure to some of the terms
(bisector, perpendicular) and familiarity with the instruments (compass and straight edge).
This will further help students learn how to formulate his or her own justification
intuitively and deductively in the real-life situations.

PRE-ACTIVITIES/PRE-TEST:
Answer the following jumbled letters to form a word related to geometry.

’s In

Using only the compass and straightedge, we can perform the basic
construction in geometry. We use a straightedge to construct a line, ray, or segment
when two points are. The marks indicated in the ruler may not be used for
measurement. We use a compass to construct an arc
(part of a circle) or a circle, given a center point and a radius length .

’s New

Using only compass and a straightedge, copy the line segments shown
below. Label them as they labelled below.

Lesson Constructing Line Bisector of a Line and Angles

1 Using Compass and Straightedge (Bernabe 2009)

CONSTRUCTION 3 To construct the bisector of a given angle

The bisector of an angle is the ray through the vertex and interior of the angle which
divides the angle in two angles of equal measures.

Given: ∠ A

Locate points B and C on each side of ∠ x, so that ∠A is equal to ∠BAC

This can be done by drawing and arc of a circle with center at A.

A
D

Construct: Ray AX such that X is in the interior of ∠ A and ∠ BAC

radius which is more than construct an arc of the circle Ray AX the bisector of
half BC, draw an arc of a with the same radius and ∠ BAC
circle in the interior of intersecting the arc in the
BAC. preceding step at point X.

The midpoint of a line segment is the point on the line segment that divides it into two equal
parts. This means that the midpoint of the segment AB is the point C on AB such that AC is
equal to CB. The perpendicular bisector of a line segment is the line perpendicular to the
line segment at its midpoint.

A C B

In the figure, C is the midpoint of AB. Thus, AC is congruent to CB. The line I is the
perpendicular bisector of AB.

Instruction: Make a journal to manifest your understanding about the topic. You can start it
by following the format below. Write it in your notebook.

I have learned that a line segment can be divided into two congruent segments locating the
_____________ of the segments.

I have realized that the angle ______________ divides an angle into two congruent angles.

A .Draw ABC such that AB = 6 cm, BC= 8 cm and AC =7 cm long. Use a ruler for
this. Do the following constructions using ABC

1. Bisect the side BC

2. Bisect the interior ∠B
3. Construct the altitude from vertex C (The perpendicular line is from C to BA).

Draw ABC such that AB = 6 cm, BC= 8 cm and AC =7 cm long. Use a ruler
for this.
Do the following constructions using ABC

1. Construct a line through B which is parallel to side AC

2. Construct an equilateral triangle PQR so that PR and the altitude from vertex
C have equal lengths.
