CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

The beginning of the 21st century marks the significant change on one behavior

towards the use of technology. An age where technology is starting to dominants around

us. It paves the way to the rapid development of mobile phones which essentially

becomes part of the daily life. It has affected the accessibility, security, safety and

activity within the society which had become part of the culture. Seward (2013) and

Schreiner (2017) stated that the biggest lament of teacher in regard to mobile phone is

that it leads to student distraction and off task behavior.

In particular, students who spend several hours each day starring into mobile

phones or smartphone tend to change their sleeping habits and stay up late use the

devices (Fowasch and Jusoh, 2017). The use of mobile phone distracts learning process

and student believe that their classroom learning is disrupted during texting (Froese et.al,

2017). Mostly researcher agreed that usage of mobile phone creates problem for youth

(Brian and Leung, 2015).

On the other hand, Sarwar and Soamro (2013) state the positive impact is

smartphone in education context, it enables society to access various learning resources

and opportunities for individuals to continue their education by distance learning. Student

usually use smartphones for self-expression and to maintain their social relations

(Albarashdi et al, 2016). Furthermore, the use of a smartphone may improve the

efficiency of students study activities by allowing them to continuously search for (study

related) information and by facilitating teamwork (Chen and Yan, 2016). Chenz and

2
Tzeng (2010) stated that moderate usage of mobile phones will likely enhance students’

academic performance through access new information.

Most of the study focused on the advantages and disadvantages of using mobile

phone to students (Froese et al, 2017, Sarwar and Soamro, (2013), Chen and Yan, (2016),

Chenz and Tzeng, (2010) but less focused on the relationship between using mobile

phones and students’ academic performance (Albarashdi, 2016).

This study therefore attemps to find out the effects of mobile phone as a learning

tool among Senior High School Students on their academic performance. Also, to check

wether or not there will be a significant relationship between mobile phone use as a

learning tool and academic performance of Senior High School Students. The result that

will be obtained from this study maybe use to enhance students learning process and in

developing new teaching methods using mobile phonbe as a learning tool.

Statement of the Problem

Academic Performance of Senior High The main purpose of this study is to

identify the effects of Using Mobile Phone School Students in Anahawan National High

School. It attempts to answer the question.

Is there a significant relationship between using mobile phone as a learning tool

and academic performance of Senior High School Students?

3
Scope and Delimitation

The main purpose of this study is to identify the effects of Using Mobile Phone in

Academic Performance of Senior High School Students in Anahawan National High

School. This study look upon the student’s personal information such as their name

(optional) sex and General Percentage Average (GPA).

The researcher limited the study to 83 Grade 12 student

enrolled in the school year 2022-2023 in collecting the data the

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Using Mobile Phone

Mobile Phone is used as means of interaction among people in which they create,

share, and exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks

(Blumstock and Eagle 2010). The mobile phone was originally made for adults for

business use (Aoki,2003). People can use Mobil phone to communicate online friends so

they can conquer live their lives more conveniently not just only for communication, but

also for their works, and personal entertainment (Booruyang et al. 2015).

Choliz (2010) pointed out that excessive use of gadget and dependency on the usage of

mobile phone maybe considered as an addictive disorder. Ravichandran (2009) reported

that smartphone addiction led to a poor relationship among family members. Mobile

addiction can be seriously affected at the psychological level of human mind and human

organs (Goswami and Singh, 2015). Mobile Phone has both positive and negative

consequences effect on human behavior and human psychology (Chatterjee, 2014).

Using Mobile Phone and Students’ Academic Performance

According to Eteokleous and Ktoridou (2009), the benefits of mobile phone

integration into students learning on campus are useful with the mobile phone capabilities

that are easily supporting learning. However, overuse of the mobile phones have negative

5
outcomes, like could cite financial problems (Billeux, 2008) on sleep disturbance

(Thomee, 2011).

Kumar (2011) indicated that students were downloading online lectures and

reading from e-books to improve learning. This is positively correlated with the higher

rate of smartphone ownership among higher education student (Bowei, Kyle, & Mathew,

2012). Yet in another research Lepp, Barkley, and Karpinski (2015) reported that

students who used the cellphone more on daily basis were likely to have a lower GPA

than students who used it less. Furthermore, in the study of Kates, Wu and Coryn (2018)

on the effects of mobile phone use on academic performance, the result found that it has

negative relationship which indicates that when the use of mobile phone increases,

students’ academic performance decrease.

Academic Performance

In this study, the researcher would like to identify the Effects of Using Mobile

Phone and Academic performance of Senior High School Students in Anahawan National

High School with to their attitudes and benefits.

7
Definition of Term

Mobile phone is a device that is commonly used by students for communication

and in dealing with their subjects.

Academic Performance is the outcome of education the extent to which a student,

teacher or institution has achieved their goal. In this study, academic performance is

measured by the General Percentage Average (GPA) of the students.

Hypotheses of the study

The following hypotheses were formulated to explore the relationship between

using mobile phone and academic performance of students.

Ho: There is no significant relationship between using mobile phone and academic

performance of the students

Ha: There is a significant relationship between using mobile phone and academic

performance of the students.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study use descriptive correlational research design. This design is used to

measure the relationship between two variables. In this study, the researchers use a

descriptive research design because it is the best suited in the study since the researchers

primary aim is to describe the relationship between using mobile phone and students’

academic performance.

Research Respondents and Sampling Procedure

The target respondents of the study are 83 Grade 12 Students who use a mobile

phone in the school year 2022-2023 at Anahawan National High School. Respondents

will be chosen using sample random sampling to avoid bias.

Research Instruments

In this study, the researcher use a Likert Scale of Chenz and Tzeng (2010) with 15 items

and seek the General Percentage Average (GPA) of Senior High School Students (Grade

12) to determine the relationship of using mobile phone and academic performance.

9
Data Gathering Procedure

Once the request will be approved, the researcher will start conducting by giving a

questioner to the respondents after that they will start collecting the General Percentage

Average after the data will be gathered, the researcher will compose the answers and

average of the respondents using the SPSS.

The table 3 shows the relationship of using mobile phone to respondent’s

performance. The study revealed that there is no significant relationship between using
mobile phone in students’ performance. Ellis et al., (2007), Cho et al., 2015) determined
that no significant relationship exists between user satisfaction and performance
impact. However there is a positive relationship of performance in using mobile though
keeping purposes, Studying Purposes, Online Purposes. It implies that if the students
use mobile phone to keep notes, studying, and search online purposes then there is an
increase to his/her performance. Furthermore there is a relationship though, not
significant. Kumar (2011) indicated that students were downloading online lectures and
reading from e-books to improve learning. Norries, Hossain, and Soloway (2011) in their
study demonstrated the student’s achievement increase significantly when students use
mobile learning devices, including smartphone, during learning time. Anzai, Funada,
Akahori (2013) investigated mobile device use for mobile photo note-taking, in order to
examine the effects of this trend on vocabulary retention.
