1. Read the texts. Then read the questions. In which text can you find the answers to
them? Write A or B next to each question.

Elton John and Leonardo da Vinci

A.
Elton John is a British singer and he writes songs too. His name wasn’t always Elton John. It was
Reginald Kenneth Dwight. When he was a child, Reginald was a very good piano player and he
usually played classical music. He started a rock band when he was a teenager and changed
his name to Elton John. When he was twenty years old he was already famous around the
world for his rock music. He was also famous because he looked different from other singers.
The colours and designs of his clothes were very unusual and he wore enormous colourful
glasses. The shy Reginald who loved classical music was a person of the past. In the 1970s,
Elton already had seven number one albums! In the 1990s, one of his big successes was the
music for the Walt Disney film The Lion King. The song Candle in the Wind was another very big
success. He performed a special version of this song when Princess Diana died in 1997. Elton
John is now in his seventies but his name is still famous around the world for his music.

B.
Leonardo da Vinci is one of the most famous artists who ever lived. Leonardo was born in 1452
in Vinci, a small town in Italy. When he was fourteen, his father sent him to study art with one
of the best painters of that time. Leonardo studied with him for about six years and soon he
became a better painter than his teacher! Some rich people thought that Leonardo was very,
very talented, so they became his patrons and gave him money to live on. Now he could spend
all his time studying and painting. He didn’t need to have a job to earn money to pay for his
food and his house. His patrons paid for everything. Leonardo was a great painter but he also
had many other talents. He lived 500 years ago but he had many modern ideas and studied
many different things. For example, he wanted to know more about the human body, and he
studied how the eyes work. Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous painting the Mona Lisa is in the
Louvre, a big museum in Paris.

2. Read the text and according to the information given in it, complete the sentences
with ONE or TWO words.

I enjoy it now

Last year I went to a school which I didn’t like at all. The school building was not bad. It had
a big gym and a good cafeteria. I liked the school itself but I didn’t like the classes I had
there. Most of them were boring and uninteresting. I was often bored during the lessons
and all my friends felt the same. Teachers were not quite friendly to us. I remember once
our math teacher got angry with Nick, one of my classmates. Nick felt nervous and stressed.
I didn’t feel comfortable at school and felt unhappy there. So, at the end of the year, I told
my parents I wanted to go to a different school. On the first day at my new school I felt
excited. But I felt nervous too because I didn’t know my new teachers and classmates.
But I quickly made friends and now I’m happy to be there. The days are never the same. I
never feel bored or tired. I enjoy the classes and I like the teachers too. I especially enjoy
my literature class. We often read poetry and speak about modern British and American
poets. Last Saturday we had Shakespeare’s day. The girls were wearing makeup and the
boys were all dressed up. I read a sonnet by Shakespeare and can you imagine? Everybody
was listening! It was real fun! There is only one thing I don’t like. School starts at 8am and I
don’t like getting up so early.
