1. Refer to the table which summarizes the results of quality control test for a certain
product.
Category Pass quality control Fail quality control
Good product lit 4
Defect nroduct 11 24

a) If one of the items is randomly selected, what is the probability that:

i) the item is a good product.
ii) the item is a defect product or passes quality control.
iii) the item is a good product and passes quality control.
iv) the item is a good product given it passes quality control.

b) If three of the items are randomly selected (without replacement), what is the
probability that all items are defect product and fail quality control?

C) Are the events "pass quality control" and "good product" mutually exclusive?
Why? Are the events "defect product" and "good product" mutually exclusive?
Why?

d) Are the events "pass quality control" and "good product" independent? Why?
(25 marks)

2.
a) A certain medical procedure has 90% chance of success on patients. The
surgery is performed on three patients. The random variable represents the
number of successful surgeries.

i) Find the probability of the surgery being successful on zero patient.

ii) Find the probability of the surgery being successful on at least one
patient.

iii) Find the mean and standard deviation.

b) The average that a set of 10 calls received by a certain switchboard will be a

wrong number is two. Use the Poisson distribution to approximate the
probability.

i) Find the probability that among th calls received by the switchboard,

there are exactly two wrong numbers.

ii) Find the probability that among 15 calls received by the switchboard,
there are at least one wrong number.

3. The test scores for the exam in statistics class have a mean of 60 points and standard
deviation of 10 points. A student is randomly selected. Assume that the scores are
normally distributed.

a) Find the probability that the score is:

i) more than 85.
ii) between 80 and 90.

b) If there are 200 students in that class, about how many will receive between 80
and 90 points?

C) What is the lowest score students can earn to be among top 10% in the exam?

d) If it is estimated 5% of students fail the exam, what is the passing mark?

e) If a random sample of 16 students is selected, find the probability that the mean
score is more than 65.
(25 marks)

4. A psychologist claims that more than 5.8% of the population suffers from professional
problems due to extreme shyness. A survey conducted to 100 professional adults shows
eight of them suffer from professional problems due to extreme shyness.

a) Construct a 95% confidence interval of the true percentage of the population

that suffers from extreme shyness.

b) Conduct hypothesis test using rejection region approach at the 5% level of

significance.

C) Calculate the p-value of the test. Explain how to use this p-value to test the
hypothesis.

d) Explain how to use the confidence interval in (a) to test the hypothesis.
