LONELINESS
This is seen with both Ms Florence Gates and Esmie Grant.
Ms Florence Gates - Her family members (sister, father and mother) have passed, as well as her
friends. She expresses her loneliness in where she states that she has lived too long and that she
needs to move on to the other side. This shows that miss Grant no longer wants to be alive and feel
the pain of being alone.
Esmie Grant - Esmie's parents are said to have passed away in a fire. This made her an orphan and
she was placed into foster care. She experienced another sensation of loneliness when her best
friend,Juliet, at the orphanage, was taken to live with her aunt.
Both of these character are able to empathize with each other and bond on their loneliness. Now
they are less lonely since they have each other. This is seen when Esmie is frightened about loosing
Miss Grant. They are not related but she is scared of loosing her.
Loneliness
Loss
Loss
This is seen, similarly to loneliness, in both Esmie Grant and Ms Florence Gates
Both Esmie and Florence have lost people they were close to. With Florence, it is her mother, father
and Annie and with Esmie, it is her mother and father. There is no sense of reconciliation between
them when it comes to feelings of loss.
Esmie- She can remember her parents dying in the fire. Although she doesn’t recall what happened
to them, the event affected her deeply. She was scarred by the incident which now makes her afraid
to lose people that she has become close to. Florence and Juliet can serve as examples. Esmie does
not wish to lose the connection she has between the people she has come close to which is also the
reason she decided to make Florence the mint tea.`
Florence- Florence, who has limited memories, can remember some of the good times she spent
with her family even though it has been a long time since they died.
REFLECTION
This is mainly seen with Ms Gates, but also with Esmie.
Ms gates constantly has reflections or flashbacks about her parents and sister. She speaks on how
her mother taught her how to sing and play piano and her father and sister going to concerts with
her.

Relationships
Love and Family Relationships is one of the main themes in the story. This is seen where Ms Gates
constantly talks and thinks about her family. The memories that she has of her family are happy
ones. She loves her family so much, that she wouldn't mind dying to see them again in Heaven
(she's religious).
Esmie doesn't have any known living relatives. However, her parents love was shown when they
saved her from a fire, killing themselves in the process.
