Familiarization with Laboratory Equipment & Study of
Instruments & their Symbols
Objectives:

 To study basic instruments and their symbols.

 To familiarize ourselves with the laboratory resources and equipment.

Task # 01:

Sr. Name of Functionality Unit Range

No. Instrument

1 Impedance It measures impedance (opposition to the Ohm (Ω) Specified by user.

Analyzer current) in AC systems. Impedance can
also be analyzed in the form of
rectangular or polar display.

2 Digital It measures resistance of insulator e.g. Ohm (Ω) Measure resistance at

Megohmmeter cable jackets very high voltages
(Megger) ranges from 500 V to
2 kV.

3 Kelvin Double It is used to measure unknown electrical Ohm (Ω) N/A

Bridge resistance below 1 Ω.

4 Wheatstone Bridge Measure electrical resistance. Similar to Ohm (Ω) N/A

potentiometer. Variation in wheatstone
bridge can be used to measure
capacitance, inductance, impedance and
other quantities.

5 Lux Meter It is used to measure brightness. Also lux (lx) N/A

used for photography and filming.

6 Digital Clamp It is used to measure current by magnetic Ampere N/A

Meter induction. (A)

2
7 Portable Power It measures electrical power Watt (W) N/A
Analyzer characteristics such as true
power, power factor, efficiency
in home appliances and
industrial machinery.

8 Digital Earth It is used to measure earth Ohm (Ω) 19.99 Ω to 1.99 kΩ

Meter resistance and earth voltage. It
also estimates the composition
of soil, water deposits in earth.

9 Temperature It is a device that gathers data Kelvin (K), N/A

Sensor concerning temperature from a Celsius (C),
source and converts it to a form Fahrenheit (F)
that can be understood by
observer.

10 LAN Tester These testers are used for the N/A N/A
determination of IP address,
connectivity of a cable, break
points and incorrect connections
in fiber optics

11 Multimeter It is used to measure AC and Volt (V), N/A

DC voltages, current and Ampere (A),
resistance of a circuit element. Ohm (Ω)

12 EMF Meter It measures AC and DC currents Gauss (G), It can measure

or field of electricity within a Tesla (T) electromagnetic field
certain area. activity between 50 and
60 Hz.

13 Capacitance It is used to determine Farad (F) N/A

Meter capacitance of a capacitor.

14 Galvanometer It is used to measure very small Ampere (A) N/A

amount of current and direction
of current with high accuracy.

15 Frequency It is used to measure frequency Hertz (Hz) N/A

Counter (number of oscillations per
second).

16 LCR Meter It is used to measure impedance or resistance, Ohm (Ω), Farad N/A
inductance and capacitance of a circuit element. (F), Henry (H)

3
17 Power Supplies A power supply is a device that takes an incoming Volt (V), Ampere N/A
electrical current and amplifies it to levels required (A)
by various devices.

18 Watt Meter A watt-meter is an instrument which gives a visual Watt (W) N/A
indication of the amount of electrical energy being
supplied to a circuit.

19 Phase Sequence This device is used to determine the sequence of N/A N/A
Meter supply in three phase circuits.

Critical Analysis:

In this lab we have learned about different instruments used in electrical and electronics
engineering. We have learned how to use these instruments. What are their units and range of
these instruments.

Post Lab:
Q1: What does a multimeter consists of? Write a short description of each part of a
multimeter along with their circuit diagrams.
A multimeter consists of AC and DC voltmeter, ammeter and ohmmeter. It usually measure AC
and DC voltages, currents and resistances.
