W220 Gas, lubricating oil, coolant 02.

02. Gas, lubricating oil, coolant

02.1. Gas
02.1.1. General information
The engine is designed to operate on natural gas complying with the
following specifications:
Gas quality
Methane index > 80
Methane (CH4) > 75%
Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) < 0.01 %
Net calorific value > 33 MJ/Nm3
Solid deposits and particles < 5 µm

The methane index is a number evaluating resistance to gas knock. A

high methane index indicates higher resistance to knocking. The me-
thane index can be calculated if the constituents of the gas are known.
Heavy hydrocarbons such as strongly concentrated ethane, propane
and butane tend to lower the methane index significantly . This lowers
resistance to knocking and the engine performance must be
down-graded. (see ).

Fig. 02-1

Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) causes serious damage to engine compo-

nents. It is therefore essential to check that the percentage does not
exceed the indicated value.

02.2. Lubricating oil

02.2.1. Characteristics
Wärtsilä has set following requirements for lubricating oils to be used
in its engines running on natural gas :
· Viscosity class : SAE 40 or multigrade
· Viscosity index : min. 95
· Base number : 4-7 mg KOH/g
· Sulphated ash content : max. 0.6 w-%
· Foaming characteristics, ASTM D892
– Sequence I : max. 100/0 ml
– Sequence II : max. 100/0 ml
– Sequence III : max. 100/0 ml
· Maximum allowed Bright Stock amount is 10 w-%

Caution : Only the use of virgin base oils is allowed, i.e. recycled or re-fi-
ned base oils are forbidden.

02.2.2. Condemning limits for engine lubricating

oil in service
When estimating the condition of used oil, the following properties
along with the corresponding limit values must be noted.
Property Limit Unit Preferred method
Viscosity at 40°C Max. +50 % of the initial value cSt ASTM D 445
Viscosity at 100°C Max. +25 % of the initial value cSt ASTM D 445
Total insolubles Max. 1 % %w ASTM D 893/4055
Base Number Max. -50 % of the initial value mg KOH/g ASTM D 2896
Total Acid Number Max. +2.5 over the initial value mg KOH/g ASTM D 664
Nitration by IR Max. 20 Abs/cm Abs. @ 1700 cm-1
Oxidation by IR Max. 25 Abs/cm Abs. @ 1625 cm-1
Water Max. 0.3 % %w ASTM D 95/1744

A rapid change of one or the other of these parameters can indicate

abnormal operating conditions. The table above describes when the
oil must be drained and changed without waiting the normal drain in-
terval as specified in the maintenance manual.
More detail on interpretation of analysis for oil in service can be found
in document C02-100430.

02.2.3. Approved engine oils

The following oils, that have been granted our approval for use, have
undergone extensive field tests and have proven to perform satisfac-
torily in the W220SG engine type.
APPROVED OILS
Supplier Brand Name Type Viscosity at BN (mgKOH/G) Sulph. ash (%w)
100°C (cSt) ASTM D 2896 ASTM D 874
Total Fina Elf Elf Nateria MH SAE 40 13.9 5.2 0.45
ESSO ESSO Estor SHPC SAE 40 13.1 5.1 0.48
Exxon Mobil Mobil Pegasus 705 SAE 40 13.0 5.3 0.48
Exxon Mobil Mobil Pegasus 805 SAE 40 13.5 5.3 0.48
Shell Mysella LA SAE 40 14.2 5.0 0.45
Texaco Geotex LA SAE 40 13.2 5.2 0.45
Compared to the other approved oils, Exxon Mobil Pegasus 805 is
made from hydrotreated base oils usually produced for turbine appli-
cations. It gives then a better thermal stability. Compared to the Pega-
sus 705, the additive package is boosted with antioxydants and gives a
good balance between detergent and dispersive properties.
Estor HPC is a semi synthetic oil, which means that mineral refined
base oils are blended with synthetic PAO (Poly Aromatic Olefines)
and then thermal stability of finished oil is increased.
With these two products, Mobil Pegasus 805 and Estor HPC, the oil
drain interval can be extended under regular oil monitoring.

Caution! Before using a lubricating oil not listed in the table above,
contact Wärtsilä France. Lubricating oils that are not appro-
ved have to be tested according to Wärtsilä France procedures.

Important : When a lubricating oil is used which has not got our approval,
the responsibility for the performance of the oil and the engine
in this respect remains fully with the user/owner of the engine
concerned.
In case a lubricating oil of a not approved brand is used, the
warranty of the engine will immediately become null and void
and the customer will in that case hold Wärtsilä harmless and
indemnify Wärtsilä from any claim what so ever.

Caution! Never mix different oil brands unless approved by the oil sup-
plier and, while under warranty, by Wärtsilä France.

02.2.5. Inspection and maintenance

a) As an efficient method of defining the oil change frequency and
a way of obtaining the engine manufacturer’s opinion as to the
condition of your engine, we recommend that you send us oil sam-
ples, taken at regular intervals, indicating the corresponding num-
ber of operating hours.
To be representative of the oil circulating, the sample should be taken
with the engine running and put in a clean 0.75 l container. Take sam-
ples before and not after topping up with fresh oil. Before filling the
container, rinse it with oil from which the sample is to be taken.
In order to make a complete assessment of the condition of the oil in
service, the following details should be supplied with the sample: ins-
tallation, engine number, oil brand name, engine operating hours,
number of hours the oil has been used, location from where the
sample was taken, type of fuel and any other relevant remarks.
Oil samples with no information except for the installation and engine
number are virtually useless.
When appraising the condition of the oil used, the following proper-
ties should be observed. Compare with typical values (type analysis)
for fresh oil of the brand used.
Viscosity:
Viscosity shall not be more than 25% above the guidance value indica-
ted at 100°C. The maximum permissible viscosity for an SAE 40 grade
oil is 212 cSt at 40°C and 19 cSt at 100°C. The minimum permissible
viscosity for an SAE 40 grade oil is 70 cSt at 40°C and 9 cSt at 100°C.

Page 40 0443
W220 Gas, lubricating oil, coolant 02.

Water content :
The water content should not exceed 0.1% -0.3%. Otherwise water has
got into the oil because of defective seals on items such as the coolant
pump, cylinder liners, etc. The oil must be drained and the problem in-
vestigated.
Total Acid Number (TAN) :
The TAN value must not be >2.5 over initial value. A higher value indi-
cates high acidity. The oil must be changed.
Total Base Number (TBN) :
A maximum decrease of 50% compared with the fresh oil value is ac-
ceptable.
Oxidation - Nitration :
Oil oxidation is caused primarily by gas from the crankcase (blow by)
and is proportionally greater at high engine temperatures. Maximum
permissible value: 25 ABS/cm.
Nitration is essentially caused by NOx formed during combustion:
maximum permissible value: 20 ABS/cm.
b) Topping up. Measure and record the quantity of oil added. Atten-
tion to lubricating oil consumption may give valuable information
about engine condition. A continuous increase may indicate wear
of the piston rings, pistons and cylinder liners. A sudden increase
may require the removal of the pistons if no other reason is found.
c) Guidance values for oil change intervalsare to be found in
Chap 04.
It is advisable to observe the following oil change procedure:
1 Drain the lubricating system while the oil is still hot.
Make sure that the oil filters and coolers are drained too.
2 Clean spaces where oil is held, including the filters and
the camshaft compartment. Fit new oil filter cartridges.
3 Fill the oil sump with the required quantity of oil, see
Chap. 01.

02.2.6. Oil sampling procedure

The oil sample shall be sufficient to ensure good reproducibility of
measurements.

02.2.6.1. Recommendations
The oil sample shall be taken from the engine when hot and stopped
(after running). Take the sample through the drain port or through the
dipstick tube using a flexible pipe and a syringe, fixed to the container.
The flexible pipe shall be long enough for the sample to be taken from
the middle of the sump oil.
Always use clean containers to avoid any risk of contamination due to
traces of sediment when taking the sample (cleanliness precautions
to be taken before and after sampling).
(Make sure the container is properly sealed by turning it over and tap-
ping it.)

0443 Page 41
02. Gas, lubricating oil, coolant W220

The oil sample must be as representative as possible of the oil in the

engine. For this reason, when taking a sample from the drain port, it is
recommended to run off part of the oil before filling the container.
This prevents any impurities deposited at the bottom of the sump
from contaminating the sample.
If the sample is taken at the oil filter, make sure that the plug is tighte-
ned with a wrench to prevent any possible leaks.

02.2.6.2. Oil sampling kit

Container with a syringe and flexible pipe, plug to close the container
after sampling and an identification label. Kit reference: SPC1800001.

02.2.6.3. Information to be recorded on the identifica-

tion label for engine monitoring
Remember to attach the duly completed sample form to the sample
container. Put identical stickers on the sample form and the sample
container.

02.2.6.4. Identification
· Engine mark
· Engine type
· Engine No.
· Number of engine operating hours
· Sample date
· Ampling conditions (oil change or intermediate)
· Fuel type
· Number of operating hours of the oil
· Type of use
· Oil brand name
· Oil name
· Lubricant SAE grade
· Amount of oil added since last oil change

Equipment identification: the results of the analysis must be correctly

cross-referenced to the engines from which samples were taken.

02.3. Cooling water

02.3.1. General
The cooling water of the W200 and W220SG must always be treated to
prevent corrosion, cavitation and scale deposits in the engine cooling
circuit. Depending on weather conditions, the coolant shoud also
carry on anti-freezing properties. For that purpose, cooling water ad-
ditives or ready to use coolants have been tested and approved for the
W200 and W220 engines.

Note : It’s strictly forbidden to run the engine without water treat-
ment, even for short duration test.

Note : When the ambient temperature is below 0°C and in order to

prevent cooling water freeze and engine knockdown, it is nec-
essary to use antifreeze and anticorrosion products

Warning : Don’t mix RD25 with antifreeze / anticorrosion products.

Note : For the product to be mixed, more the mixture ratio is higher,
worse is the water cooling performance.

Warning : For the product to be mixed, it is better to do the mixture out-

side the engine in a dedicated and clean tank before the engine
filling. It isn't possible to get an homogeneous product if the
mixture is done in the engine.

Note : Wärtsilä promotes the utilisation of “ready to use “ coolants

because the water quality is well controlled as well as the real
additive concentrations in the coolant.

risk of corrosion ; unsuitable as cooling water.

0443 Page 45
02 Fuel, Lubricating Oil, Cooling Water W220

Note : To have a good homogeneous mixture :

If the engine has a preheating water pump, make the mixture
circulate thanks to this pump during one hour.
Else start the engine and let the engine running during 10 mn.

02.3.7. Control test kits

The table (cf. Chap 02.3.8.) describes which properties must be ana-
lysed for an used sample of coolant. Every laboratory specialised in
water chemistry should be able to perform them. If none laboratory
are avalaible locally please contact your Wärtsilä representation.
Depending on which coolant is used, different methods can be utilised
on site to control the concentration of anti-corrosion additives.
The glycol content, the Ph, the alcalinity and other aditives reserve of
the coolant must be checked in accordance with the maintenance
schedule (cf. Chap 04), more often if specific problem were reported.

02.3.9. Treatment replacement

If you change the additive brand or if you use for the first time an addi-
tive when untreated water has been used before, it’s necessary to use
the following method :
1 Carefully drain the water circuit
2 Rinse with the demineralized water and dispersant
(contact the additive supplier to choose the best dispersant)
3 Fill in the water circuit with demineralized water
4 Put the engine in operation with load during one hour (to
be sure that the thermostatic valves are opened)
5 Take a water sample, measure the phosphate content
6 Rinse the water circuit with demineralized water
7 Analyze the result of water sample : if the phosphate
content is >0,5 g/l, return to the point 1. If the phosphate content is
<0,5 g/l, you can fill the engine with the new treatment.

Warning : Never use soda or non dedicated product to clean the engine.
Before to perform this operation, contact your Wärtsilä repre-
sentative.

02.3.10. Water level compensation

a) Product ready to use.
To compensate the water level, use only the product, never use un-
treated water.
b) Product to be mixed.
After level compensation with untreated water, run a few time the en-
gine and check the water analysis result. If the result isn't OK, add
product to protect the engine.

02.3.11. Water draining

It is mandatory to replace regularly the water treatment in accordance
with the maintenance schedule (cf. Chap 04).
