Scope of work for maintenance on on-load tap-changers

Detailed below are the general and rough procedures and standard items to be
checked during routine maintenance of on-load tap-changer.

1 Preliminary Check
1) After the transformer is taken out of service, isolated and earthed at primary
and secondary side (has to be performed by the customer), adopt necessary
safety precautions.

2) A neat working environment for dismantling and reassembling of the tap changer
shall be prepared.

3) Additional to this scope of work preparations according to the MR preparation

sheet F0131100 have to be provided and the required maintenance material has
to be available at site.

2 Tap changer diverter switch withdrawal and oil compartment

1) Drain the oil from the tap changer conservator and diverter switch oil
compartment. (oil pump has to be provided by the customer).

2) Dismount the drive shaft, if necessary.

3) Open tap changer head cover.

4) Use suitable lifting device or crane and lift the tap changer diverter switch insert
and place it in a clean work bench (lifting device or crane has to be
provided by the customer)

5) Clean the oil compartment thoroughly and remove all carbon sediments.

6) Check the insulation material, fixed contacts and other components of the oil
compartment.
3 Tap changer diverter switch.

1) Dismantle the diverter switch.

2) Remove the contact shells of the diverter switch.

3) Clean all components.

4) Check the transition resistor and measure the resistance value.

5) Check the flexible leads, contact carrier and screw connections.

6) Install necessary inspection material.

7) Carry out updating measures as recommended by MR.

8) Check diverter switch contact system and degree of consumption of each

arcing contact. Check for any unbalanced consumption of arcing contacts and
take corrective measures (MR OLTCs only). Replace arcing contacts if
necessary (MR OLTCs only).

9) Check springs, nuts and bolts and all mechanical parts and replace if
necessary.

10) Check energy accumulator and replace energy accumulator if required. Carry
out updating measures if required.

11) Reassemble the diverter switch insert.

12) Install the diverter switch insert into the oil compartment. Ensure correct
insert position.

13) Replace tap changer head cover gasket and close tap changer head cover.

14) Fill up new oil for tap changer and tap changer oil
conservator. (to be performed by the customer)

4 Tap changer protective device (RS2001, MR OLTC only).

1) Check the tap changer protective device. Clean the unit.

2) Check electrical connections and terminals for proper connection and cover
gasket for water sealing.

3) Test protective device to ensure proper function.

5 Motor Drive

1) Clean the drive unit.

2) Check motor, contactors, limit switches.

3) Check control wiring, terminals and tighten control wire connections.

4) Check step-by-step relay and main contactors for proper function.

5) Check mechanical and electrical safety device for preventing overrun at end
positions.

6) Check and maintain all mechanical parts, cams and cam operated switches.

7) Check interlock for manual operation.

8) Check operation counter.

9) Check and clean position transmitter.

10) Check door closing and locking mechanism.

11) Check dust sealing gasket for door, and replace if required.

6 Drive Shaft

1) Check and clean vertical and horizontal drive shaft condition. Check for
corrosion and take corrective measures if required.

2) Check the coupling brackets and tighten bolts.

3) Change coupling pins and locking washers.

4) Check bevel gear and lubrication.

7 Final Check on Completion

1) Check correct synchronism between motor drive and tap changer

1. Check for proper electrical and manual operation of tap changer.

2. Carry out several operation of tap changer and check end positions.

3. Energising the transformer (has to be performed by the customer).

Please note:

We recommend to carry out the maintenance in one day, per tap changer!
To keep the tap changer out of the oil could affect the insulation parts due to humidity.
