IS THE PROPERTY OF LOCKHEED MARTIN CORPORATION AND/OR ITS SUBSIDIARIES, IS AN UNPUBLISHED WORK PRO-
TECTED UNDER APPLICABLE COPYRIGHT LAWS, AND IS DELIVERED ON THE EXPRESS CONDITION THAT IT IS NOT TO BE

WRITTEN CONSENT, AND THAT NO RIGHT IS GRANTED TO DISCLOSE OR SO USE ANY INFORMATION CONTAINED HEREIN. ALL
RIGHTS RESERVED. ANY ACT IN VIOLATION OF APPLICABLE LAW MAY RESULT IN CIVIL AND CRIMINAL PENALTIES.
WARNING
COMPONENTS FROM HELICOPTERS INVOLVED IN CRASHES/ACCIDENTS MAY BE OFFERED FOR SALE AND USE
ON AIRWORTHY HELICOPTERS. PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT WHENEVER A PART IS SUBJECTED TO STRESSES,
THERMAL EFFECTS OR OTHER DAMAGE OUTSIDE OF NORMAL OPERATING PARAMETERS, SOME ADVERSE

DETERMINED TO BE WITHIN DESIGN PARAMETERS, ANY PART THAT MAY AFFECT SAFE OPERATION OF THE
HELICOPTERS MUST BE ASSUMED TO BE DAMAGED BEYOND ACCEPTABLE LIMITS AND MUST NOT BE REUSED
ON AIRWORTHY HELICOPTERS. FOR THE SAFETY OF YOUR HELICOPTER AND THE PEOPLE WHO FLY WITH YOU,
IT IS NECESSARY THAT THE INTEGRITY OF CRASH DAMAGED PARTS BE ASSESSED BY YOU BEFORE YOU FLY.

MAINTENANCE MANUAL, SA 4047-76-2
INTRODUCTION
1. General.
A. Coverage.
The purpose of this Introduction is to describe the arrangement, numbering system, and special features of the
S-76A Maintenance Manual, and to tell you how to use them. To take advantage of all that this manual can
do for you, you should become thoroughly familiar with the contents of the Introduction. It is your road map
and the key to the various signposts that have been put in this manual to show you the shortest route to what
you are looking for. Refer to it often to refresh your memory. It has been put here to help you.
This manual provides maintenance instructions for the Sikorsky S-76A model helicopter manufactured by
Sikorsky Aircraft, A Company of Lockheed Martin. Sufficient information is provided to enable a mechanic,
who is unfamiliar with the S-76A helicopter, to service, troubleshoot, test, adjust, and repair systems, and to
remove and install components normally requiring such action on the line or in the maintenance hangar.
Supplier/vendor publications may also be provided for systems and equipment that may be installed. Refer
to paragraph 5 for information regarding this documentation.
B. Format.
The Specification for Manufacturers’ Technical Data, ATA Specification No. 100 is issued by the Air Trans-
port Association of America. It establishes a standard for the presentation of certain data produced by
aircraft, engine, and component manufacturers, required for the support of their respective products. The
presentation and format of this manual are in general accordance with ATA Specification No. 100 (ATA
100). Therefore, the maintenance manual is broken down into standard chapters as defined by ATA 100.
Each chapter covers a specific area of maintenance information, such as CHAPTER 10, PARKING & MOOR-
ING, or a specific system, such as CHAPTER 32, LANDING GEAR. All data pertaining to a given system is
located within its chapter, regardless of whether it is mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical in nature.

MAINTENANCE MANUAL, SA 4047-76-2
The S-76 Maintenance Manual is organized in accordance with ATA Specification No. 100 and in a manner to
make it easy to locate desired information, make the manual easy to follow, give the user a means to determine
that the information is current, and to determine whether applicable Service Bulletins are reflected in the instruc-
tions. The features of the organization of this manual and how they are used are described in the following
paragraphs, generally in the order that they are encountered.
A. Binders.
The S-76 Maintenance Manual is volumized and bound in several separate binders. The insert in each binder
spine identifies the chapters contained in that volume. The binders are easily opened and closed, to insert or
remove pages.
B. Tab Dividers.
The Maintenance Manual is divided into seven primary sections or groups of content, as follows:

MAINTENANCE MANUAL, SA 4047-76-2
Each of these sections is identified by a white plasticized tab divider carrying the title. These tabs are one
behind the other in the first position at the top of the manual.
Each chapter is also identified by a tab carrying the chapter number and the title. These tabs are blue and
plasticized; for ease of reference, they are staggered, but not in the first position occupied by the section tabs.
The same section and chapter tabs are also used in the S-76 Illustrated Parts Catalog, as applicable, to
facilitate locating related information from one manual to the other.
C. Title Page.
The title page carries the basic publication issue date in the lower right corner. Whenever the manual is
revised by a normal revision, the latest revised date will be shown under the issue date. This will permit you
to immediately identify what revision of this manual you have.
A List of Effective Pages (LEP) is provided after the title page to identify the date and revision number of all
pages in the front matter of the manual. It also lists the date and latest revision number of each chapter. Each
chapter has its own List of Effective Pages immediately after its tab divider. Between the book list of effective
pages and the chapter lists, every page in the manual is accounted for. The lists of effective pages are
revised, as necessary, concurrently with each revision. This means, that at any time, you are able to check
that any page in the manual is current and the latest page issued. The 0 in the REV NO. column of the lists
of effective pages identifies pages in the basic issue of the manual. An asterisk (*) next to page numbers
identifies those pages revised, added, or deleted by the current revision.
E. Record of Revisions.
The Record of Revisions provides you, or the person(s) assigned the responsibility of maintaining this manual,
a place to record the successive revision numbers, issue dates, dates inserted, and the incorporator’s initials.
If Sikorsky Aircraft incorporates the revisions, or in the case of a reprint of the manual, the record will show
the revisions already incorporated.
The Record of Temporary Revisions provides you, or the person(s) assigned the responsibility of maintaining
this manual, a place to record the successive temporary revision numbers and issue dates, with additional
columns for dates inserted, dates removed, numbers and issue dates of revisions incorporating or superseding
the temporary revisions, and incorporator’s and remover’s initials. The Record of Temporary Revisions is
printed on yellow paper. If Sikorsky Aircraft inserts the temporary revisions or removes them prior to delivery,
or in the case of a reprint of the manual, the record will be annotated to reflect the status of the temporary
revisions. The List of Active Temporary Revisions can be used as a cross-check to determine that the Record of
Temporary Revisions has been properly maintained.
The List of Active Temporary Revisions is printed on yellow paper and filed after the Record of Temporary
Revisions. It provides a list of only the temporary revisions that should be in the manual; all other temporary
revisions should be removed. The list will be revised each time that temporary revisions are issued, revised,
or incorporated by a normal revision. In addition to the temporary revision number and latest issue date, a
brief descriptive title of the subject and applicable comments, such as related Service Bulletin number, will be
provided.

H. Table of Contents.
The manual Table of Contents is divided into the seven primary sections, or groups of content, in accordance
with the white tab dividers. Each chapter within the groups is listed in numerical sequence, and indented
below each are the section/subsystem element numbers and titles. In the GENERAL CONTENTS column a
brief list of subjects covered by each element is provided. Each chapter has its own detailed Table of
Contents, which is broken down in accordance with the chapter/section/subject and topic division require-
ments of ATA Specification No. 100 (Refer to paragraph K.) Large chapters, sections, subjects, and topics
are further broken down to identify specific procedures or information. (For example, refer to CHAPter 66,
POWERTRAIN.)
The purpose of the listing of Service Bulletins and Service Notices is to identify which bulletins and notices have
been investigated for effect on this Maintenance Manual. The lists are revised concurrently with each revision.
Other Service Bulletins/Notices may have been issued prior to the date of a current revision, and their
absence from these lists does not mean that they do not apply, but only that the revision was already in the
printing process and it was not possible to add them to the lists. Such bulletins/notices, and those issued since
the current revision date, must be reviewed for impact on maintenance information and procedures in this
manual.
NOTE: It is important to check the revision letter and date of each Service Bulletin/Service Notice. A par-
ticular issue of a bulletin or notice may have No Effect, but a subsequent revision not investigated yet
may have considerable impact.
The listing of Service Bulletins/Service Notices uses four columns to summarize bulletin/notice information:
(1) Number.
(a) The Service Bulletins are listed in numerical sequence. The number is made up of four elements:
76 32 4B
(b) The Service Notices are listed in numerical sequence. The number is made up of two elements:

(2) Date - The date listed here is the date of latest issue of the Service Bulletin/Service Notice that was
investigated.
(3) Title - This column identifies the Service Bulletin/Service Notice by nomenclature. It is the same title as it
appears on page 1 of the bulletin/notice.
(4) Manual Incorporation Date - This column indicates the status of the Service Bulletin/Service Notice.

(a) Date - If a date is listed in this column, it indicates the date of the revision that incorporates the
Service Bulletin/Service Notice information.
(b) TBA - If TBA (to be assigned) is listed in this column, it indicates that the listed issue of Service
Bulletin/Service Notice has been investigated and it does have an effect on the Maintenance
Manual, but the revision to incorporate the information has not been assigned yet.
(c) No Effect - If No Effect is listed in this column, it indicates that no change to the manual was
necessary for the issue of the Service Bulletin/Service Notice listed.
(d) Other self-explanatory statements may be used in this column, such as Canceled, Replaced,
Replaces, etc.
J. Alphabetical Index.
An alphabetical index is provided for the entire Maintenance Manual. The standard division of subject matter,
the detailed chapter tables of contents, and the assignment of specific page blocks for different maintenance
procedures, should usually lead you to the information you are looking for without consulting the index. This
will become increasingly true as you develop familiarity with the ATA Specification No. 100 numbering
system and the arrangement of this manual. The alphabetical index lists all the systems and their major
components covered in this manual. Reference to the location of coverage for each item is made by the
chapter/section/subject number.
ATA Specification No. 100 establishes a uniform method of arranging material in commercial publications
prepared throughout the aircraft industry. This standardizes the treatment of subject matter and simplifies
your location of information and instructions. If you are already familiar with ATA Specification No. 100, you
will be readily able to locate the information you are looking for. The following paragraphs describe this
standard arrangement of subject matter as it applies to the S-76 Maintenance Manual.
NOTE: Paragraph L. describes the special features and variations from the standard arrangement used in
this manual to improve usability.
The arrangement of subject matter in this manual is in accordance with four levels of division:
(a) Groups - Those primary divisions of the manual which make broad separation of content. See the
white tab dividers or refer to paragraph 2.B.
(b) Chapters - Those secondary divisions that provide separate coverage for each system or specific
area of maintenance information. The chapter (system) number is used as the first element in the
standard numbering system.
(c) Section - Those third level divisions that break a system down into subsystems. The section (subsys-
tem) number is used as the second element in the standard numbering system.
(d) Subject - Those fourth level divisions covering individual subjects or units in a system or subsystem.
The subject (unit) number is used as the third element in the standard numbering system.

The numbering system provides a means for indentifying and segregating subject matter by chapter
(system), section (subsystem), and unit (subject). The numbering system is a conventional dash-number
breakdown, and each number is composed of three elements which consist of two digits each. When
referred to as a unit, the three-element number (chapter/section/subject) is called the 9chapter/section9
number. The chapter/section number is located on the lower right corner of each page with the page
number and date.

The page numbering system is used as a further method of segregating and identifying information for
rapid retrieval. All maintenance data is separated into specific types of information (topics) and blocks
of page numbers are assigned to each. The following page number blocks are used in this Maintenance
Manual.
INTRODUCTION
Page 9

MAINTENANCE MANUAL, SA 4047-76-2
*This block is used when all sub-topics of Maintenance Practices are relatively
brief. Wherever individual sub-topics become so lengthy as to require a number of
pages, the following page numbers blocks are used for each sub-topic.
Each new topic of information starts with page 1, 101, 201, 401, etc., and con-
tinues within the page number block, as necessary; unused page number blocks
are omitted.
Page numbers appear under the chapter/section number in the lower right cor-
ner of each page. A normal blank page within a page block (for example, the
back of a foldout page) will be identified on the preceding page, as follows:
26 20 00
Pages 103/104
Jun 15/90 AAR15
SA
Illustrations and tables use the same numbering system as the page block they appear in. For example,
Figure 403 is the third figure in the Removal/Installation topic. If an illustration requires more than one
page unit, whether foldout or multiple-sheet presentation, each page unit will be assigned a Part num-
ber. The title under the first part will identify the number of parts in the illustration, for example, Part 1
of 6 Parts; subsequent parts will be numbered in sequence until the last part number. The division of
illustrations into parts, rather than sheets, was required to make foldout illustrations microfilm compat-
ible. To be consistent, and use only one numbering system throughout the manual, the system was
extended to all illustrations. For additional information, refer to paragraphs 2.L. (5) and (6).
(5) Coverage.
The information covered within each division of the manual, whether group, chapter, section, subject, or
topic, is generally self-apparent from the title alone. The manual Table of Contents briefly outlines the
coverage in each division down to the section, or subsytem, level; the chapter tables of contents identify
coverage down to unit (subject), topic, and even sub-topic.
L. Special Features.
Some variations and improvements have been made in the arrangement and format of subject matter in this
manual to improve usability. These special features include new chapters, rearrangement of data, elimination
of figure keys, intergrated testing and troubleshooting, expanded schematics, layout of foldout illustrations,
microfilm compatibility, and alphabetical index.

MAINTENANCE MANUAL, SA 4047-76-2
(1) Chapterization.
ATA Specification No. 100 provides breaks in the prescribed chapter numbering sequence to provide
flexibility in the arrangement of subject matter. The scope of Chapter 65 has been changed and new
chapters have been created in this manual, as follows:
This is a new chapter containing the required FAA-approved data in accordance with FAR
29.1529.
This is a new chapter that consolidates the vibration analysis data for the various affected systems.
The self-tuning vibration absorber is covered in Chapter 65.
ATA Specification No. 100 presently requires that chapter 65 include coverage for rotors, blades,
transmissions, drive shafts, and flight controls. If we had followed this requirement, about one-
quarter of all the data in this maintenance manual would have been in this one chapter, defeating
the purpose of chapterization. Therefore, we have limited chapter 65 to subjects related only to the
main and anti-torque rotors, and created two new chapters, 66 and 67.
This is a new chapter containing only gear boxes, drive shafts, and related subsystems.
This is a new chapter containing only flight controls and related subsytems.
All maintenance illustrations have been prepared with the nomenclature directly on the art. Nomencla-
ture shown is exactly the same as used in text. This eliminates the need to refer to a separate figure key
(list of numbered callouts) to find out what the illustrated items are.
This topic has been organized to contain the operational test procedures, the troubleshooting trees, and
the expanded schematics. The step-by-step operational test describes normal system operation and
desired results. If the desired result is not obtained, each problem that can occur is listed separately
under CORRECTIVE ACTION and sends you to a specific troubleshooting procedure by the Trouble No.
that identifies it on the troubleshooting chart. The expanded schematic, next to the troubleshooting chart,
can be used to trace out the operation of the system. Specific test points called out in the troubleshooting
logic tree can be located on the schematic. Physical location of system components, disconnects, and
reference designators is shown on the component location diagram in the adjacent Description/
Operation topic.

MAINTENANCE MANUAL, SA 4047-76-2
Wiring schematics are expanded to include all wire breaks in addition to test points, essential black box
internals, and mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic interfaces. Schematics are shown with electrical
and hydraulic power off, helicopter on ground, and weight on wheels, unless otherwise indicated.
Foldout illustrations are used when the continuity would suffer by breaking up an illustration into sepa-
rate sheets. Single-page foldout illustrations are right-hand pages and usually have a blank page on the
back. The maximum size of a single foldout is the equivalent of five page-size illustrations, or about 38
inches. Each foldout is marked with reference marks at each page-size unit for microfilm compatibility.
The reference marks identify the limits of the parts of the illustration and make it easy to match up hard
copy made from microfilm. Each part is identified with the figure number and title of the illustration. The
title under the first part indentifies the number of parts, and the following parts are numbered in sequence
until the last part, regardless of how many pages (sheets) make up the illustration. Foldout schematic,
block, and location diagrams consisting of two sheets are usually printed on two facing pages to make
it easier to follow the system. If there are more than two sheets, those sheets that benefit most from it, may
be printed facing each other. In Chapter 22, Auto Flight, because of the complexity of the automatic
flight control systems and the many pages of text and supporting foldout illustrations, a special arrange-
ment of foldout illustrations has been used. All foldout illustrations for a particular topic are located at the
end of the text; each illustration is a right-hand page and has a blank apron. This arrangement makes
it easier to read the text while following the system in the supporting illustrations, fully extended from the
manual and facing the text pages in front of them.
This manual has been prepared so as to be suitable for microfilm presentation. Reference marks have
been placed on foldout illustrations to identify image areas and make it easy to reassemble the foldout
from prints of individual frames taken from the microfilm. The title of each foldout illustration is repeated
on each frame (part), and the parts are numbered consecutively. Refer to paragraph (5). Each part of a
foldout page is further identified with the large chapter/section number in the lower right corner. Layout
of foldout illustrations has been made so that breaks at the reference marks do not go through compo-
nents or internals. For information on availability and ordering microfilm copies of this manual, contact
the S-76 Product Manager’s Office Commercial Customer Service, at the address in paragraph 5.D.
This manual along with the Illustrated Parts Catalog and the Airworthiness Limitations and Inspection
Requirements is also available on an IETM. The IETM’s empower maintanance personnel by providing
large amounts of information in an easy-to-access format. Maintenance documents and illustrations will
be accessible/loadable to desktop and laptop computers, and accessible on Sikorsky’s web portal. To
assist the maintainer, the IETM features a complete hyper-link table of contents, detailed search capa-
bilities, maintenance tasks and fault isolation procedures. For information on availability and how to
order the IETM version of this manual, contact Technical Support Services at the address in paragraph
6.D.
This manual along with the Illustrated Parts Catalog and the Airworthiness Limitations and Inspection

mation on availability and how to order PDF of this manual, contact Technical Support Services at the

ATA Specification No. 100 does not specify the requirement for an alphabetical index. The standard
division of subject matter, the unique numbering system, the descriptive titles, and the detailed tables of
contents usually make an alphabetical index unnecessary to locate desired information. However, an
alphabetical index is a useful tool at certain times, particularly when you are unfamiliar with ATA 100
and the arrangement of this manual. An alphabetical index has been prepared for the entire manual,
rather than a separate index for each chapter. (Refer to paragraph 2.J.)
M. Effectivity.
Where helicopter manufacturing serial numbers can reliably identify the effectivity of instructions in this
manual, this information will be provided in paragraph headings, figure titles, or lead-in statements. All
production S-76 helicopter serial numbers consist of six digits, such as 760029. The first two digits
represent the model S-76, and usually only the last four digits of the manufacturing sequence serial
number will be used to identify effectivity. For example: On 0029 and subsequent. On illustrations and
in tables, an abbreviated method of showing effectivity is also used, consisting of an eight-digit number.
The first four digits indicate the start of the effectivity and the last four digits, separated by a hyphen,
indicate the end of the effectivity. For example: 0007-0028 indicates helicopter serial numbers 760007
through 760028. Open-ended effectivity is indicated by 9’s as the last four digits. For example: 0029-
9999 indicates helicopter serial numbers 760029 and subsequent. On illustrations where a different
effectivity applies only to a portion or detail of the drawing or schematic, a flag will be located next to
the area affected. The number inside the triangular flag 2 will identify the applicable effectivity note,
which will be identified in the same way.
NOTE: Three helicopters with serial numbers consisting of five digits are covered by this manual. They
are 76005, 76006, and 76007. To avoid confusion with helicopter serial numbers 760005,
760006, and 760007, these five-digit serial numbers will always be used in their entirety,
and not in the short form, such as 005.
Because most components and installations may be removed, installed, modified, updated, or retrofitted
on any S-76 helicopter, serial numbers are not usually reliable for identifying their effectivity. Therefore,
optional equipment that may or may not be installed, will not be assigned effectivities. You can readily
tell whether a particular piece of equipment is installed on your aircraft. Where there are different
configurations of a component or system, descriptive nomenclature and subject titles are used to make
identification easy. For example: 17-ampere-hour battery, 34-ampere-hour battery; AC power system
(VFR), AC power system (IFR).
3. Revisions.
A. Normal Revisions.

Revisions will be issued from time to time to update the information in this manual. These revisions will be
numbered in consecutive sequence and will provide replacement and added pages which will become a
permanent part of the manual.
(1) Highlights.
Each revision will be transmitted by a Highlights page(s) which will identify the affected pages in
consecutive order and tell briefly what the changes are.
Revisions, additions, and deletions are identified by a heavy vertical black line (bar) along the left
margin of the page opposite only that portion of the printed matter that was changed. On illustrations
a small pointing hand-will indicate areas changed. New illustrations added will be identified by a
pointing hand next to the figure number. A revision bar opposite the chapter/section, page number,
and date indicates that the text is unchanged, but material was relocated from a different page.

B. Temporary Revisions.
Temporary revisions are issued as required to provide a rapid means of amending the manual between
normal revisions. Temporary revisions are printed on yellow paper and numbered consecutively, starting with
1, for each chapter. For example: The first temporary revisions to the chapter on Landing Gear is TEMPO-
RARY REVISIONS NO. 32-1. Temporary revisions contains filing instructions so they can be inserted facing
the text that is affected. A descriptive subject title is followed by a discussion of the reason for the change.
Requests for revision of the manual can be made using the Publications Change Request Form. (Refer to
Contact with Sikorsky Aircraft, paragraph 5.)
With each normal revision, the book List of Effective Pages is revised, making it possible to check that any
page in the manual is the latest page issued. (Refer to paragraph 2.D.) With each temporary revision, the List
of Active Temporary Revisions is revised to list the temporary revisions that should be in the manual. (Refer to
paragraph 2.G.)
