LESSON 1

CONCEPTUAL ACTIVITY: (20 points)


1. In your own words, differentiate play, games, and sports.
Answer:
Play, games, and sports are different if you really understand the word. A play is a less
serious activity for enjoyment or just having some fun. A sport uses mental ability, physical
body and strength to compete with other players. Sports and games are quite the same
because it uses physical strength and mental ability that are governed by set of rules. But in
games, it has a goal which is to win in a game not just like in the sports, the player plays
either competition or just having some fun.
2. In the song “No man is an Island”, what does it infer that will relate to our topic?
Answer:
Our topic is all about sports, game, play, socialization and competition and it is very
related to the song “No Man is an Island”. The message of the song is we need to socialize
with other people for us to build social relationship. We can’t stand by our own feet, we need
other people to motivate us, help us, and teach us how to enjoy life. Just like in the game,
it’s more fun if you have companion in playing.

Site six example of common sports and games where most children love to play.
 Palo-Sebo- This sport is much enjoyable because you have to use your physical
body so that you can win and you can have a bag of prizes. I think this sport is one of
the most challenging sports in the Philippines. In this sport, your number one
opponent is your body. You need to use your physical strength in order to climb the
greasy pole.
 Sungka- I already experienced playing this kind of sport. I will recommend this sport
to those people that are stressed because this sport can take away your stress and
bad mood. This sport fits to those people who are not fun of engaging their self into
physical activities wherein it uses mental ability and physical strength. This sport is
very relaxing.
 Basketball- This sport is very popular in our country. This sport uses physical
strength and agility so that you can survive and win in the game. This sport uses a
ball and a basketball ring and the player must shoot the ball in the ring to have a
score.
 Volleyball- I already played this sport since I was in high school. I super love this
sport because it can develop teamwork and the same time you can interact other
people or it can develop social relationship. There are six players in the court. Each
player has their own responsibility or their own position in playing the sport.
 Boxing- This sport is very popular because yearly this sport exists. When we talk
about boxing, the first person that would come up to our mind is Senator Manny
Pacman Pacquiao. This sport needs agility and physical strength.
 Billiards- This sport became popular here in the Philippines because of Efren “Bata”
Reyes. This sport needs focus because the number one rule of the sport is you need
to shoot the billiard ball except the white one. This sport has set of rules but I’m not
really familiar with this sport.

CONCEPTUALITY ACTIVITY: (20 points)
1. What can you say about the Sports Development Timeline?
Sports develop from time to time because we are fun of imitation. Sport development
is the promotion of sports activities for the community. We need these sports for us have
healthy minds, physically fit and the most important is we have a strong body against any
viruses. Successful sports development depends largely on effective partnership and
networking with a wide range of community groups and individuals.

2. For you, which sport has an amazing history? Why?


For me, the sport that has an amazing history is volleyball because this sport is a
combination of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball. Playing a single sport is not easy
how much more if that specific sport is a combination of the four sports. I think it’s quite
difficult but it’s very fun playing this sport. Also, you can play beach volleyball wherein it has
only four players in the court not just like in indoor volleyball that has 12 players in the court.
This sport can develop teamwork at the same time social relationship.

1. Create your own realizations or insights about the history of sports.
Sports are physical activities wherein it links with rituals, entertainment and it also
involved preparations for war. The best example of this is the javeline throw, it uses a
spear-like equipment. Study of the history of sport can teach us lessons about social
changes and the nature of sport itself or how it exists. By this, human also develop
his/her basic skills and determine if he/she is physically fit or not.

2. What is the essence of History in the world of Sports?


Knowing the history of everything is much important. In sports, for you to really
understand the specific sport is you need to know and study its history or how this sport
exists. By simply studying and knowing its origin, you have now the knowledge and idea
how to play and you are aware of rules of the specific sport. There’s a purpose why
sports exist and you will know this if you are willing to read and understand the history of
the sports.

CONCEPTUAL ACTIVITY: (20 points)


1. Which do you prefer, individual sports or dual sports? Why?
I prefer to play dual sports because as what I have said, playing dual sports is much
enjoyable than individual sports because you have companion in playing the entire game. I also
experienced playing individual sports but I think it’s quite boring. Dual sports can develop
teamwork because you are playing as one in the game and it is very important that have the
connection with your partner in playing. Dual sports also have lots of rules than individual
sports, and you need to be aware of those rules to avoid violations.
2. From the different sports mentioned above, which one do you play the most? Why?
From the sports mentioned above, the sport that I love the most and played the most is
badminton. I love this sport because it can strengthen my physical body and mental health
because it uses physical strength, agility and also mind in playing this game. Playing without
using your mind is useless. I played this sport since I was in first year high school and I travelled
different places because of this sport.

Search six different pictures of sports where famous personalities were playing. Identify what
sport it is and give a 3-sentence caption.

Allysa Caymo Valdez is a Filipino volleyball player. She currently plays for a local club
team named Creamline Cool Smashers. She was a member of the collegiate varsity women’s
volleyball team of Ateneo de Manila University in both indoor and beach volleyball.
Emmanuel “Manny” Dapidran Pacquiao is a Filipino professional boxer and Senator of
the Philippines. Nicknamed “Pacman”, he is regarded as one of the greatest professional
boxers of all time. He was elected as Senator of the Philippines in 2016 and he is serving a 6-
year term.

Efren Manalang Reyes is a Filipino professional pool player. A winner of over 70


international titles, Reyes was the first player to win world championships in two different pool
disciplines. Reyes also represented the Philippines at the World Cup of Pool, winning the event
with partner Francisco Bustamante in 2006 and 2009.

Lee Chong Wei is a former Malaysian badminton player. As a singles player, Lee was
ranked first worldwide for 349 weeks, including q 199-week streak from 21 August 2008 to 14
June 2012. He is the fourth Malaysian player after Rashid Sidek, Roslin Hashim and Wong
Choong Hann such a ranking, and is the only Malaysian shuttler to hold the number one ranking
for more than a year.
Kobe Bryant was an American professional basketball player. A shooting guard, he
spent his entire career with the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association.
Bryant also led the NBA in scoring twice, and ranks fourth on the league’s all-time regular
season scoring and the all-time postseason scoring lists.

Ma Long is a Chinese table tennis player. The current Olympic and World Champion, he
is ranked number 3 in the world by the International Table Tennis Federation. He has held the
ranking 1 for the total of 64 months, the most by any male player in the history of table tennis.

CONCEPTUALITY ACTIVITY: (20 points)


1. Construct your personal insights on the origin of the game.
Badminton first appeared in the Olympic Games as a demonstration sport in 1972 and
as an exhibition sport in 1972. Badminton is also popular in Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan and
Denmark. I think lots of people love to play this sport for fun or even in competition. This is easy
to watch but it’s hard when you’re the one playing in the court. This sport needs more strength,
agility and presence of mind in playing because there are sets of rules and regulations that you
need to follow and be aware of. This game uses racket and a shuttlecock, this shuttle is
commonly made of goose feathers.

2. What is the significance of rules and regulations to the game?


Learning about the badminton rules and regulations will allow you to play better and
enjoy the game more. We need to be aware of the rules and regulations in playing a specific
sport because every sport has its unique rules and regulation and for us to avoid violations in
playing the badminton. The rules of playing badminton seem quite complicated at first with the
variations between who will serve, the positioning of the court and which areas of the court
considered as in or out. It is very important that you have enough knowledge in playing the
specific sport that you loved the most and by this, it can improve your skills and abilities how
you engage and deal with that sport.

1. Have you tried playing badminton? Is it one of your favorite sports?
Yes, I tried playing badminton since I was first year high school and yes, it is also my
favorite sport. I able to compete Provincial Athletic Meet level in badminton doubles. It’s quite
fulfillment in my part because all my efforts and sacrifices during trainings weren’t wasted.
Because of this sport, I travelled different places and meet different people. I was a student
athlete for 6 consecutive years. It is very fun playing badminton if you have companion in the
court. It can also give you a healthy and physically fit body because when you’re playing
badminton, you will use your entire body and mind in playing.
2. What can you say about the development of badminton?
Badminton develops from to time to time because of mixing one sport with another
sports. As the sport develops, the rules and regulations of the sport also develop and it helps us
to play the game with fun and feel comfortable. We need to be aware of the new set of rules and
regulations in playing badminton to avoid violations. However, we need to adapt from to time to
time because as what I have said that all sports specifically the badminton will change its rules
and regulations or how to play that sport.
