Unit 8: Developing a creative media production project
The Final Major Project (Year One)

STATEMENT OF AIMS

Unit 8 is the summative unit in the first year of the two-year qualification. It will
provide students with a measure of self-directed learning through the
completion of a substantial creative media production and technology project.

The unit requires students to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding
developed in Units 1–7, to complete a creative media production project. It will
provide students with a measure of self-directed learning, and an opportunity to
begin to clarify their longer-term goals through their choice of an activity to explore in
greater depth

Name
Megan Griffiths

Disciplines video
(primary/secondary
)
(e.g. video,
animation, sound,
photography
Project (e.g. short
narrative film,
experimental short Slow motion video
film, experimental Colour and movement
animation,
cinemograph, time-
lapse etc. )
Section 1: Rationale (minimum of 100 words)
This section provides you with an opportunity to reflect on, review and summarize your
progress and achievements through the first 7 units, and the knowledge, skills and
understanding you have acquired. What you know now, and what it means to you, compare
with what you knew and could do before you stared the course and how this has influenced
your choice of pathway and your project proposal.
Before I started this course, I knew nothing about animation and very little on
editing videos. This meant I had never used software such as aftereffects and
premier pro. It was a step for me to confidently begin using a video camera to take
shots and then be able to edit them in premier pro.
Throughout this course I have managed to pick many new different skills regarding
these software’s and become more confidently with using them. I thought I would
have not liked animation as I had no idea walking into the first session on how to
use the adobe animate software skills but towards the end I really enjoyed using
the software to use my creativity to confidently make new projects using animation.

Section 2: Project Concept (minimum of 200 words)

This section provides an opportunity for you to clearly explain the concept and aims of your
project, the research and ideas that will support its development, what you anticipate
producing, the levels of and types of resources that you will need and an indication of the
form in which you will complete and present your project realisation within the allocated
timescale.
My idea for my final major project is to use video in making a slow motion of glitter.
I will either use just glitter falling or maybe glitter falling into water. I will use a black
background and many different coloured glitters for this. I may use a fan at some
point in the project to make the glitter fall in a different way. I will use a relaxing
music as the background for my final major project to make it more calming for the
audience. I won’t the main idea of my final major project video to be based on the
idea of creating something that can provide a sense of calming for people of any
age who suffer from anxiety. My video will be 2 minutes long and will be on a loop.
I will loop my project by using the same colour glitter at the beginning and end but
also film as if they continue falling from one another so there is no gap in the video
for end back to the start. I will use different coloured glitters in the middle of the
video though so that it creates more of a unnoticeable loop to the audience. I may
also use different props in either the water or the tray that I use for the glitter to fall
in slow motion into, these probs will be to add more to the video than just glitter
and the background.
Section 3: Evaluation – How you plan to record your progress (minimum of 100
words)
This section provides an opportunity to explain how you will reflect on, and evaluate, you
work as both an on-going activity and at the conclusion of the project. You should describe
how you intend to record your decision making and how you will document changes to your
ideas as work progresses. The evaluation should be referenced to your stated aims and be
reflective and analytical rather than a description of actions completed. Remember, you are
consistently evaluating and reflecting on your work throughout the process, not just at the
end.
I will use my production diary to record my progress that has been made in each
session I will do this by providing images and descriptions of what I have done in
the lesson. I will also use my production diary to track what part of my final major
project I will focus on in the next session. This will help me make sure that I have
an idea of what I should be working on in the upcoming session so that I try not to
fall behind or waste any time needed towards my project.
For my evaluation of my final major project I will make sure that I evaluate all my
work thought the entirety of my project as well as filling out the evaluation
document when I have completed my final major project.

Proposed Research Sources

These will be resources and influences to inform your project, which may include audio-
visual texts, articles, websites etc.
I will find research sources for my final major project from YouTube and social
media such as TikTok I will research different video ideas linked to my idea of
slow-motion glitter for my final major project. I will use these videos to find
inspiration of different materials to use and which type of shots look good for slow
motion videos.
I will use my research page to show these video ideas that I find. I will also show
on this page different research I do towards what type of lighting I will use with a
black background and keep the different colour glitter I will be using visible to my
audience. I will also do research based on colour to decide on which colour glitters
I will be using in my final major project that would work well towards my target
audience.

Resources Required
e.g., props, locations, costumes, make-up, sounds (where applicable)
-different colour glitter
-studio

-black background
-fan
Maybe some more props for the glitter to fall on but have not decied what I want to
use yet.

Skills to develop/learn
Appropriate skills for chosen pathway (this will be helpful for staff to know to organise
particular workshops).  Be as specific as you can with the skills you might need to develop.
Filming and working with slow motion.
Editing videos in premiere pro
Devlop my different camera shots
Personnel and responsibilities
The Final Major Project is designed to be YOUR personal project. You are working
independently but may require some assistance or include models, actors, crew etc. Identify
all personnel involved. If it will just be yourself, please make this clear.
For my final major project i think I may need some help with using the camera for
some different shots. I might be able to ask paul to help with this.
I will be the main producer for my final project but I’m not sure yet if I will need the
help from another student with making sure that the glitter falls central so that the
shot stays in focus while I direct the project.
As we don’t have much time with the production of my final major project I need to
plan out which type of shots I want to use so that I will be able to shoot them
without wasting time.

Intended audience and context

Be specific about your intended audience. Try to consider age, interests etc.

The context will be how and where your finished product will be used for; e.g., an art gallery
installation which requires some degree of ‘interactivity; from the audience.
My main target audience is aimed at all ages mostly those who suffer from anxiety
as my project is mainly going to be relaxing and calming. I will use relaxing music
to reach this audiences.
My final major project could be used in art galleries mainly aimed at showing video
instillations or could even be used as a video that is assessable for people to
watch to help them feel more calmed.

How my project will ‘loop’

Be as specific as you can with regards to how your 2-minute project will loop. This might be
having matching images at the start and finish of your project or perhaps a sound which will
loop.
I will loop my project by making sure that the stat and end of the video are ethe
same, for example using the same colour glitter at the end that I choose at the
start so the audience will not be sure when the video has ended. Another way I will
loop my final major project is by making sure the music blends well at the end to
go back to the start without making it obvious to the audience that the video is
being looped.
How to successfully complete a final major project

1. Do something you enjoy – look back on projects this year and think about
what skills you’ve learnt and which you have really enjoyed. What job would
you like to do in the future? How can you apply it to your project? Pick an area
which you can connect with.
LOVE YOUR PROJECT

2. Do lots and lots of research – primary and secondary are both essential.
Use a wide range of methods and resources, such as questionnaires,
surveys, interviews (Primary), and researching the work of professional
practitioners and techniques (Secondary).

3. Manage your time – 9 weeks of practical work is not long. Just think how
fast this year has gone so far. Plan ahead and don’t fall behind. MAKE USE
OF INDEPENDENT STUDY TIME.

4. You must document everything what happens as you go along. Your entire
journey from start to finish should be fully recorded. Describe and analyse as
you go along. Every aspect of your project should be fully considered. Your
Planning and Schedule will be vital to the success of your FMP

5. Research, design, experiment, build, evaluate. Your project should evolve

over the allotted time. Be flexible and adaptable if your FMP decides to go in
a different direction than first intended. Ensure you record all developments as
the project develops.

6. Critically analyse and evaluate – this will refer to the research you undertake,
the pre-production, production and post-production. Don’t just describe but
analyse, interpret, research and evaluate.

7. Listen to advice from your lecturers in formative assessment sessions

throughout the project. You might just find that as we are used to marking
work we know what the requirements are to make good/exceptional projects.
Remember, your work will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, so aim
for the best grade you can and take advice on board when given.

8. You are being graded against FOUR Learning Outcomes, so you need to
ensure that you do the very best in each of them to achieve the grade you
may require, so pay close attention to all parts of the FMP. Remember that
the lowest awarded grade for any Learning Outcome will be the final grade
for the FMP unit.
