OPTION A: “Weather modification experiments”

1. The opening night of the 2008 Beijing Olympic summer games was an amazing spectacle: thousands of dancers,
2. acrobats and singers performed in carefully choreographed unison. No detail was too big or too small to be left to
3. chance; from the lovely child performers, to one factor that seemed uncontrollable: the weather. Chinese officials
4. claimed that they prevented the rain by launching rockets into the rain clouds the night before. Right on schedule,
5. the first day of the Olympics was clear, with low humidity – a notable contrast to the usual hot and wet conditions
6. of South East Asia in August.
7. Does this prove that humans have learned how to control the weather? The idea of humans controlling the
8. weather is not a new one. Back in medieval France, people would shoot cannons into the clouds to try to prevent
9. crop-damaging storms. But it wasn’t until the 1940s that human attempts to influence the weather had any real
10.results. A series of weather modification experiments carried out by General Electric Laboratories showed that
11. releasing chemicals into clouds caused rain drops to turn into ice at higher than normal temperatures.
12. New satellites and high technological measuring equipment are helping scientists and researchers learn more
13. about the weather patterns of the earth. By mid-century you can expect more accurate weather predictions, and
14. eventually controlling the weather itself.
15. Governments all over the world are researching weather modification. The obvious benefits of controlling local
16. weather would be to increase crop production, decrease the severity of storms, reduce flooding, eliminate water
17. shortages, etc. There are also military uses, such as making sure the weather is clear for a mission or covering the
18. enemy with snow, fog or lightning strikes.
19. A far better use of weather modification would be if we could someday stop a hurricane like Katrina from ever
20. reaching land.

2. What change has been achieved by General Electric’s experiments on weather control?
(a) They have increased crop production (b) New technological equipment to help scientists
(c) They have decreased the harshness of storms (d) They showed that they could turn rain into ice by releasing chemicals
into clouds

OPTION A: “Education Mamas”

1. The first day at primary school is an important event in every child’s life. It can cause the new learner excitement, or it can
2. cause fear. But in education-obsessed Japan, mothers of new pupils also suffer from first-day-nerves. Before the opening of the
3. school year, many read books and magazines to find what to wear to the school’s opening ceremony and what to put into their
4. their children’s school bags.
5. On the first day of school, they accompany their six-year-olds to the opening ceremony in the school hall. Speeches by the
6. headmaster focus on the new pupils’ bright futures. They stress the need to start on the right foot by studying hard and being
7. good citizens. From the beginning until they enter university 12 years later, students will go through a series of examinations.
8. These exams are almost as much as a trauma for the mothers as they are for the students. The Education Mamas is a
9. well-established stereotype in Japan. It applies to those women who push their children to get better and better academic
10. results. Seventy-two per cent of Japanese mothers do not work outside their homes so that they can look after their children.
11. Their husbands are usually absent during the long work day and the disappearance of extended family units has eliminated the
12. grandmother figure from the home. As a result, many mothers feel isolated and unsure where to turn for advice in raising
13. their children and making them excellent students.
14. The pressure on Education Mamas doesn’t stop at educational achievements. Even lunch boxes may become a problem.
15. A poorly presented packed lunch can be enough to provoke bullying by classmates and ridicule by other mothers.

2. Every year, thousands of tourists join the town’s 9.000 inhabitants to throw tonnes of tomatoes at one another. The event, often
3. regarded as the world’s largest food fight, is the culmination of a week-long celebration made up of street parties, fireworks, food
4. fairs and a paella cooking contest.
5. The tradition began in the mid-1940s, though its origins are unclear. It has been attributed to a food fight that broke out in the
6. town in 1945 during the “parade of giants and big heads” and had to be broken up by the police. The fight was banned in the early
7. 1950s until 1957, when the locals held a funeral for a giant tomato in protest and successfully had the ban removed.
8. Over 100 tonnes of tomatoes are brought to the town and thrown during an hour-long battle, at an estimated total cost of
9. €140.000 or € 2.300 a minute. In recent years the festival has become so popular that the council decided to limit the attendance
10. to the event to a maximum of 20.000 people.
11. The fight begins at 11am with the firing of a water cannon. According to the rules, participants must stop throwing tomatoes
12. as soon as they hear the second round of the cannon. Then, it’s time to clean up. Actually, once the tomato pulp is sprayed down
13. by fire trucks, the ground is clean due to the activity of the tomato.
14. The tomato festival has become a global phenomenon, with similar festivals staged at one time or another in Colombia, China,
15. the US and Chile.

OPTION _: DRONIES: A NEW TREND TO REPLACE SELFIES?

1 From Papal visits to the Oscars, no event is now complete without a “selfie” to document the day. But the
2 widespread trend for the self-portrait photographs, taken on a mobile at arm’s length, could now be usurped by the
3 “dronies” – photos or videos taken by a drone.
4 This new phenomenon known as dronie, where people look at a quadcopter flying above them and wave, is
5 getting more and more popular. Its arrival may mean selfies are no longer the new cool thing.
6 Unlike the selfies, where people usually appear squashed in at an awkward angle, this trend results in high
7 quality recorded films.
8 According to reports, experts predict that drones will become trendier in tourist destinations, as they will be able
9 to pilot themselves, following the subject around automatically.
10 Tony Saunders, general manager of Tourism New Zealand Australia, says they have a drone project designed to
11 attract younger tourists who are fond of taking selfies. He noted that popular selfies and dronies were "getting a lot of
12 attention". The drones can capture full HD videos of tourists for eight seconds, beginning with a close-up of the
13 subject and then later the background to provide them a unique opportunity to take amazing videos or photos of their
14 vacation experience. Saunders believes that dronies have become a creative way of recording people's memories.
15 The tourists featured in the short drone videos will be sent their recorded films via email so that they can share their
16 memories on social media sites.
17 Drone experts predict that the use of these remote-controlled flying objects will also catch on outside the tourism
18 industry.

OPTION A: THE BIRTH OF ROCK AND ROLL

The origins of rock and roll have been fiercely debated by commentators and historians of music. There is
general agreement that it began in the Southern United States – a region which would produce most of the major
early rock and roll acts – through the meeting of various influences that embodied a merging of the African musical
tradition with European instrumentation. The migration of many former slaves and their descendants to major urban
centers such as Memphis, New York City, Detroit and Chicago meant that black and white residents were living in
close proximity in larger numbers than ever before, and as a result heard each other's music and even began to
emulate each other's fashions. Radio stations that made white and black forms of music available to both groups, the
development and spread of the gramophone record, and African American musical styles such
as jazz and swing which were taken up by white musicians, aided this process of "cultural collision".
The immediate roots of rock and roll lay in the rhythm and blues, then called "race music", and country music of
the 1940s and 1950s. Particularly significant influences were jazz, blues, gospel, country, and folk. Commentators
differ in their views of which of these forms were most important and the degree to which the new music was a re-
branding of African American rhythm and blues for a white market, or a new hybrid of black and white forms.
In the 1930s jazz, and particularly swing, both in urban based dance bands and blues-influenced country swing,
was among the first music to present African American sounds for a predominantly white audience.

BOOK TREATMENT
Many people like to lose themselves in a good book if they feel depressed, or
turn to great literature for inspiration and insight. But a new technique called
bibliotherapy consciously tries to use literature as a way of helping individuals deal with
emotional problems.
5 Usually, the therapist starts by recommending reading material, usually fiction,
which is thought to be relevant to the client’s situation. At the most passive level, the
book can provide an escape from a difficult reality. Readers may also identify with a
novel’s protagonist, and learn that they are not alone in having a specific problem. A
book’s plot may also suggest ways of approaching a situation that may not have
10 occurred to the reader.
However, the novel is also often used as a springboard for more active
communication between clients and bibliotherapists, who may be mental health
professionals, teachers or librarians. Clients are able to discuss the characters’
situations if revealing their own problems is too painful. They may also produce a
15 drawing or painting in response to the book, or write something themselves. Although
used on its own, bibliotherapy has been rated most successful when used in conjunction
with other forms of therapy.
The technique may be used to enhance self-awareness in people with no
specific problems, but it is commonly used in a therapeutic setting. In one government-
20 funded project in England, doctors direct depressed or anxious patients to the library for
a course of bibliotherapy. Some practitioners use this therapy to help rape victims and
drug addicts, among others.
So if you feel a bit low, why not try a spoonful of Shakespeare with a drop of
Dickens? It may help, and certainly can’t hurt.

OPTION A: “ ELECTRONIC TAGGING”

1. Measuring output is essential to the success of any business, but quantifying the performance of office workers is often difficult.
2. However, a new approach to interaction in the workplace may soon change that.
3. This approach involves the use of electronic sensors that track and record the movement, body language and / or speech patterns
4. of the people wearing them. By analysing the results, researchers can identify the best strategies in inter-office
5. relationships in order to teach them to less successful workers.
6. For example, results from the monitoring can be used to train sales teams more effectively. By using sensors to record the voices,
7. but not the words, of employees at a call centre, researchers found that operators who spoke in the same tone were less successful
8. at selling than those who varied their volume and pitch. Future sales personnel can therefore learn to imitate these tones. The results of
9. another experiment may help train negotiators. Once again, scientists used monitors to track the body language and speech patterns
10. of students who “negotiated” a salary. The most successful “negotiators” used an emphatic and consistent tone of voice, which can be
11. taught to those who need it.
12. Electronic tagging may eventually reveal other information that can help managers improve the performance of workers: they may learn
13. where most work is done; how teams interact; who talks too much, or too little; and who is stressed at work. By using sensors, one
14. German bank discovered that employees who socialise more with colleagues, far from wasting time, are actually happier and
15. perform better.
16. Such monitoring naturally raises concerns about personal privacy, but researchers suggest the following safeguards: make tagging voluntary,
17. allow employees to delete recordings and store data only on individuals’ personal computers. In addition, if employees believe that tagging
18. will help them, they will be more likely to accept it.
19. So, is electronic monitoring an invasion of privacy, or another way for management to get the best from employees? Perhaps your answer
20. depends on whether you are a worker or the boss.

OPTION A: ROSA PARKS: THE WOMAN WHO INSPIRED A MOVEMENT

1 It was December 1, 1955 when Rosa Parks of Montgomery, Alabama, was arrested. The 42-year-old African American woman was
2 on a city bus on her way home after a day’s work, and she refused to give her seat to a white passenger.
3 William Pretzer was 5 years old then and lived more than 2,000 miles away in Sacramento, California. He was too young to
4 understand the full importance of the event. To be honest, it would take time for most people to see what the protest really was: the
5 beginning of the civil rights movement in the United States.
6 Pretzer is now a senior supervisor at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. As he looks over Parks’ police
7 report, he is surprised at how ordinary the arrest was. Rosa Parks and NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored
8 People) leaders had previously organized a number of altercations on the city’s segregated buses. The simplicity of the arrest
9 documents reveals that the police dealt with this situation just like any other of these incidents.
10 “Within the African American community, it was seen as an opportunity to make progress, and to bring attention and pressure on
11 the white power structure,” says Pretzer. Parks’ act of defiance inspired the Montgomery Bus Boycott, through which Martin Luther
12 King emerged as a civil rights leader. The boycott lasted 381 days. After a Supreme Court ruling, the city’s buses became officially
13 integrated, and black and white people were eventually allowed to sit together.
14 According to Pretzer, Parks is a history maker. “History makers are those that sense the moment,” he says.

OPTION B: SEA SALT AROUND THE WORLD IS CONTAMINATED BY PLASTIC

1 Recent studies have shown that tiny plastic particles have been found in sea salt in the UK, France and Spain, as well as
2 China and the US. In August 2017, Spanish scientists tested 21 types of table salt and found plastic in all of them. They concluded
3 that “sea products are hopelessly contaminated by microplastics” and that there is “a background presence of microplastics in the
4 environment.”
5 Researchers from other countries have confirmed these findings. They believe the majority of the contamination comes from
6 microfibres and single-use plastics such as water bottles. “Plastics are in the air, in the water, in the seafood we eat, in the beer
7 we drink, and the salt we use —plastics are just everywhere,” said Sherri Mason, a professor at the University of New York.
8 The health impact of ingesting plastic is unknown. Scientists are having difficulties to research the impact of plastic on the
9 human body because they haven’t managed to find a control group of humans who have not been exposed. Some researchers
10 believe sea salt could be more vulnerable to plastic contamination because of how it is made, through a process of dehydration of
11 sea water.
12 The solution is not an easy one. “I hope what comes from this is not that consumers just switch brands and try to find something
13 that is not sea salt —like mined salt,” Mason said. “I’m afraid people just want to go to fast food restaurants and get their disposable
14 cups. We have to focus on the flow of plastic and the widespread overuse of plastics in our society and find other materials instead.”

OPTION A: ALBERT EINSTEIN’S THEORY OF HAPPINESS SOLD FOR $1.5M

1 Albert Einstein may be recognised for his theory of relativity but it is his recently discovered theory of happiness which has just
2 been sold at an auction for $1.56m. Two handwritten notes by the acclaimed German physicist which outline his advice for living
3 a happy and fruitful life went on sale in Jerusalem 95 years after they were written.
4 The notes were handwritten during Einstein’s trip to Japan to deliver a series of lectures in November 1922. It was on this trip
5 that the then 43-year-old was informed he had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. He felt extremely pleased but also
6 overwhelmed by the large crowd of Japanese people who rushed to see him. While he was in his room at the Imperial Hotel in
7 Tokyo trying to make sense of his feelings, a courier arrived with a delivery. The Nobel laureate composed two brief notes and
8 gave them to him. According to the seller of the notes, Einstein said that in the future they could be worth a great deal more than
9 the cash tip he might have handed over instead.
10 “A calm and modest life brings more happiness than the pursuit of success combined with constant restlessness,” reads one
11 of the autographed notes, which was written down on the hotel’s stationery. The other, written on a blank piece of paper, says:
12 “Where there’s a will there’s a way.”
13 The buyer and seller of the notes have wished to remain anonymous; however, the BBC reports that the seller may be the

OPTION B: OUR LOVE FOR PETS

1 While humans like to think of ourselves as the strongest, smartest species, it’s increasingly clear that many of us are simply
2 slaves to our pets. We may think we own our pets, but it’s actually the other way round.
3 The latest evidence of this can be found at Ikea. The Scandinavian company recently launched a range of pet furniture called
4 Lurvig, which means “hairy” in Swedish. To me, this proves that our obsession with our best friends is getting out of hand. We are
5 spending huge amounts of money on them. Global sales of pet products in 2016 were $103.5 billion; a 4.7% increase over 2015,
6 which is an enormous growth rate.
7 Why are we spending so much money on our animal companions? Well, basically because we seem to think pets are people
8 and treat them as such. A survey conducted in 2015 found that 95% of US pet owners consider their pets part of the family —up
9 from 88% in 2007. And it’s not just Americans; another survey this year claims that 56% of Brits plan to spend more money on
10 Christmas presents for their pets than on gifts for their human family.
11 Nowhere is the humanisation of pets more clearly reflected than in their diets. Despite the fact that dogs will happily eat anything,
12 their meals have become a gourmet affair —the ingredients of which tend to say more about the taste of their owners than animal
13 appetites.
14 I could go on talking to you about this, but I’m afraid I’ve got a gluten-free meal to prepare for my dog’s supper tonight, and he
15 doesn’t like to be kept waiting.

OPTION A SCREEN DINOSAURS

1 In 1922 a short film confused its audience by showing dinosaurs that were taken for real, living
2 dinosaurs that had somehow escaped extinction. The next day newspapers revealed the truth: they were
3 just special effects. Well, today we think we know what dinosaurs looked like because we’ve watched
4 hours of films and documentaries – from the black-and-white, robotic figures of old movies to today’s
5 computer-generated dinosaurs. But although animatronics have become extremely sophisticated and
6 realistic, what we see on screen today is a combination of fact and fantasy, just as it was 100 years ago.
7 Much of what movies have taught us is wrong. For instance, the latest paleontological research says now
8 that velociraptors (which were also much smaller than in Jurassic Park, about the size of a large chicken),
9 and quite possibly T-rex itself, could have had their bodies covered in feathers rather than skin – although
10 they lacked the ability to fly.
11 In the end, fiction is fiction, so perhaps it doesn’t matter very much if Jurassic Park and other movies
12 change some facts to add excitement. However, mixing truth and conjecture is more significant in
13 programmes that could be mistaken for reality, like Walking with Dinosaurs, often cited as the most
14 successful television documentary series of all time. But can it truly be classified as a documentary? Its
15 format is familiar to viewers as it resembles real-life wildlife programmes. So it feels like everything you are
16 shown and told in those so-called documentaries is established beyond doubt. But people should be
17 aware that many of today’s dinosaur programmes represent just the way things might possibly have been,
18 and so they should be enjoyed as a hybrid of fact and fiction.

OPTION B TATTOOS

1 The discovery of mummies with very simple decorative tattoos has proved the existence of tattooing
2 since prehistoric times. Scientists have not been able to explain the symbolism of these designs made up of
3 lines and dots, but it is thought they were part of a medical healing process.
4 However, for nearly as long as there has been tattooing, there has been condemnation. The Romans
5 used tattoos to mark slaves and criminals and the Japanese also considered them punishment. If you were
6 a convicted criminal, you would get a mark on your forehead, convicted twice get another, and if you were
7 convicted a third time, you would receive a third and final mark making the Japanese symbol for “dog”.
8 In some other societies, tattoos gained respect and assured the owners status for life. The Polynesians
9 developed them to mark rank, and there is evidence that the Incas tattooed their warriors to remind them
10 and others of their success and bravery in battle.
11 In the late 1700s Captain Cook and his men reintroduced tattooing in Europe. Returning from one of his
12 trips, he brought a heavily tattooed Polynesian man who was a sensation among London upper-class. They
13 were so fascinated that they began adorning themselves with body marks in discreet places and, for a short
14 time, tattooing became a trend.
15 After World War II, tattoos had a terrible reputation because newspapers reported stories of blood
16 poisoning and other diseases and the people who wore them were associated with delinquents. Today they
17 are becoming so popular that it is getting harder and harder to find individuals without a tattoo. This rise in
18 popularity has placed tattooists in the category of “fine artists”.
