INTRODUCTION

Power transformers are the most significant components of power system. Insulation
used in transformer are of solid insulation system and liquid dielectrics. It is important to
investigate the cause of the insulation degradation with respect to age.

The individual parameters of transformer oil have been studied under different operating
conditions. The power transformer has been quantitatively modeled in order to estimate
its reliability. The absence of defined methodology to correlate the various parameters of
transformer oil reinforces the need to undertake this study.

In this work, changes in the characteristics of insulating oil (Break down voltage, Flash
point, Fire point, Furan compounds, Acidity, Dissolved gases) were observed and their
inter-relationships was determined using Regression analysis.

BREAKDOWN STRENGTH OF OIL

Dielectric strength of an insulation material depends on pressure, temperature, humidity,

electrode configuration and nature of applied voltage. Breakdown strength analysis of
transformer oil gives effective results through which suitable dielectric material for the
related high voltage applications can be explored. The Breakdown Voltage (BDV) test kit
consists of two electrodes mounted on horizontal axis with 2.5 mm gap and enclosed in a
glass chamber as shown in Figure 2.1. Electrodes used in test apparatus is of sphere-
sphere electrode configuration since the sphere-sphere configurations provides uniform
field distribution. Diameter of sphere electrodes is of 19.8 mm.

The kit provided with standard oil test cup transparent cover, is powered through a step
up transformer capable of offering up to 60 kV. The tests are carried as per IS6792

Degraded oil refers to the oil contaminated in the moderate level. Highly degraded oil
refers to oil which is highly contaminated by various pollutants like moisture, furan
contents due to paper insulation deterioration and dissolved gases. Highly burned oil
refers to oil which is very highly contaminated due to pollutants and various internal faults
in winding.

Each sample was subjected to five times of BDV test and their average is taken as final
value. The Standard Deviation (SD) of each test samples is included along with final BDV
value. Based on BDV value the samples are further classified as very low, moderate and
high with respect to the gradient. From the test results it shall be identified that highly
burned oil shows very lower BDV.

Transformer oil testing procedure

To assess the insulating property of dielectric transformer oil, a sample of the transformer
oil is taken and its breakdown voltage is measured.

 The transformer oil is filled in the vessel of the testing device. Two standard-compliant
test electrodes with a typical clearance of 2.5 mm are surrounded by the dielectric oil.
 Measure the distance with go – no go gauge provided.
 The glass/ acrylic window is closed thoroughly.
 Now Switch on the mains power supply of the test kit, it is to be observe that before HT
ON the variac min indicator should be glowing.
 IF not then move increment decrement switch towards DEC. and wait the variac will
gets its minimum position automatically and the indicator for variacc min will glow,
 It is the time to push red HT ON Switch that will put our High Voltage circuit to live, an
indicator for HT ON will glow
 A test voltage is applied to the electrodes and by switching INC. DEC. Switch Towards
INC side
 And continuously Push the push button near it increasing voltage up to the breakdown
voltage with a constant, standard-compliant slew rate of e.g. 2 kV/s.

 At a certain voltage level breakdown occurs in an electric arc, leading to a collapse of
the test voltage.
 An instant after ignition of the arc, the test voltage is switched off automatically by the
testing device. Ultra fast switch off is highly desirable, as the carbonisation due to the
electric arc must be limited to keep the additional pollution as low as possible.
 The transformer oil testing device measures and reports the root mean square value of
the breakdown voltage.
 After the transformer oil test is completed, the insulation oil is stirred Manually and the
test sequence is performed repeatedly. (Typically 5 Repetitions, depending on the
standard)
 As a result the breakdown voltage is calculated as mean value of the individual
measurements.

Conclusion: The lower the resulting breakdown voltage, the poorer the quality of the
transformer oil!
