THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM

MS. MA. NORMA DATU RENOMERON, MAED

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

➢ Describe the main components of the

electromagnetic spectrum.

➢ State the properties of ALL EM waves.

➢ Discuss the role of the respective EM waves

and some of their applications.
ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES

• First generated and detected by Heinrich Hertz in 1887.

• Classified as transverse waves
• It’s electric and magnetic fields are perpendicular to each other, and
to the direction of propagation.
ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM

• The electromagnetic (EM) spectrum is the range of all

types of EM radiation.
• Radiation is energy that travels and spreads out as it
goes – the visible light that comes from a lamp in your
house and the radio waves that come from a radio
station are two types of electromagnetic radiation.
• The other types of EM radiation that make up the
electromagnetic spectrum are microwaves, infrared
light, ultraviolet light, X-rays and gamma-rays.

SEATWORK:

Solve the following problems. Identify the type of radiation in each problem
based on the computed answer. (Note: Use the EM spectrum as a
reference for the type of radiation.
1. What is the wavelength of a wave having a frequency of 3.76 x 1014 /s?
2. What is the frequency of a 6.9 x 10-13 m wave?
3. What is the wavelength of a 2.99 Hz wave?
4. What is the frequency of a 7.43 x 10-5 m wave?
5. What is the wavelength of a 1.28 x 1017 Hz wave?
6. What is the frequency of a 2 600 cm wave?
7. What is the wavelength of a 4.34 x 1015 / s wave?
8. What is the frequency of a 5.6 x 1010 um wave?
SEATWORK:

II. Energy of the waves. Solve the following problems by applying the
equation for the energy of the waves.

1. What is the energy of an ultraviolet photon having a wavelength of 1.18

x 10-8 m?

2. A photon has an energy of 1.1 x 10-13 J. What is the photon’s

wavelength?
