Ostello was born in Baldur's Gate to an elderly merchant and his young wife 60 years ago.

Early in his
life, he became friends with another merchant's son named Maurice. Ostello and Maurice were both
curious souls and would get into mischief as wealthy children. They could afford to play pranks on the
sailors in Grey Harbor, and the sailors would never touch them for fear of retribution.

Eventually, Ostello grew up and began working as a bookkeeper for his father. He would spend hours at
the seaside taverns late into the night listening to stories from sailors - stories about the terrifying
monsters they had fought and the strange places they had travelled. Ostello longed to leave his
comfortable home in Baldur's gate and go adventuring but did not have the chance until he was 17 years
old.

Ostello and Maurice both joined a ship for a simple voyage - a trip from Baldur's Gate to Velen carrying
manufactured goods to the woodlands. At night during the voyage, the two were looking to the stars to
chart a course for the week when they saw a glimpse of an astral dragon. The three had long
conversations regarding the nature of time, the history of the world, and the future of civilization. The
dragon warned Ostello that Baldur's Gate would fall in his lifetime if he could not stop what was to
come. The dragon disappeared, and Ostello and Maurice tried to tell the other crewmates what he saw,
but nobody believed them. Ostello returned home from Valen to enroll in the Astral University of
Baldur's Gate along with Maurice.

The two studied intensely at the university, learning some spells and incantations but never being
permitted into the higher echelons of the university. They worked primarily as researchers on a half
dozen projects - attempting to look at old histories to figure out what exactly they saw in the sky so
many years ago. They concluded that it was a being of the Astral Sea. The two had read theories on
spells to project oneself onto the Astral plane, but never found the spell itself. Ostello spent much of his
prime on expeditionary trips to old ruins across the Forgotten Realms from the deserts to the arctic. He
returned home for his parents' funeral a few years ago but has otherwise spent his life abroad.

A few weeks ago, Ostello received an offer from wealthy clients in Baldur's Gate who offered to fund an
expedition to the lost continent of Chuul. Ostello's knowledge of the region is limited to what he has
read at the Astral University, but he believes the continent to be home to a lost city of an ancient
civilization - a civilization which was able to foresee the future but fell to infighting. Ostello is not sure if
he believes the Death Curse can be reversed – or even that it should. Nevertheless, he is willing to
humor his sponsors so he can follow his own pursuits. Ostello plans to work with Maurice to stay in
correspondence with him; Ostello will look for runes and scriptures in the Jungle while Maurice stays in
the university to support his expedition with research as needed. They agreed to communicate through
a sending spell - a technique which Ostello struggles to master, but Maurice is proficient in - and by
raven if all else fails.

Now, at the ripe age of 61 years old, Ostello sets out with a band of random mercenaries to explore the
ancient city and save Baldur's Gate from impending doom...
