DESIGN BRIEF
PLATE 01 02 & 03
1. Design Problem & Objective: A famous airport developer in India entered into their
third joint venture arrangement with a big developer-contractor in the Philippines. The first
joint venture was the Mactan International Airport Terminal and the second was the
recently inaugurated Clark International Airport Terminal.
The joint venture company was registered with SEC under the name GMR-
Megawide Joint Venture with the objective to expand the existing air transport
hub of the Philippines and its economy by increasing and improving the existing
Davao International Airport by 5 times through designing “Sustainable Airport
Terminal of the Future”. The existing Davao International Airport will remain
untouched, but the proposed new terminal will be a new development and will be
called Davao International Airport Terminal 2.

B. Shopping Mall – a small 3 storey shopping mall should be provided. It has
restaurants and retail stores which can be an extension of duty free. This
shopping mall should have an instagramable features just like the Changi
Terminal 1 in Singapore.

- Porte cochere for hotel and ballroom
- Main Lobby with reception, concierge, lobby lounge, lounge bar and baggage storage.
- Front of the house office
- All day dining (no need to provide specialty restaurant as the hotel is just adjacent to the mall)
- Public toilets.
- Business Center
- Ballroom and meeting rooms
- Back of house (main kitchen, laundry, office etc)
▪ Second floor to succeeding floors (architect should decide but adher to
CAAP laws in terms of building height limit)
- Spa and gym
- Swimming pool
- Executive Lounge
- 100 Guestrooms (Standard King/Twin, Junior Suite, Executive Suite and
Presidential Suite).
- Housekeeping room on each guestroom floor.
The Rentable Office Component could be rented out to travel agency and other
offices that would support travel and tourism. The architect should ascertain the
maximum number of levels as mandated by the Civil Aviation Authority of the
Philippines (CAAP).
The Condo Units is a Studio Type (18 sqm) and One-Bedroom Unit (35 sqm)
which will cater to young professionals and executiveS working at the Hotel, Mall,
Airport Terminal and also for Pilots and Stewardess.

E. Support Areas and Facilities – these are the utilities, gen sets, sewage treatment
plant, material recovery facility and number of parking that is mandatory needed for
the development. The architect should provide a parking slots that will cater for the
airport terminal, the mall and the hotel. It should provide parking for tourist vans and
persons with disability.
2. Project Site Features: The existing old site of the Davao International Airport will
remain as is. Just like Mactan Airport Terminal 2, the new airport and other developments will be
beside the existing. You as the architect have to decide the location and the size of the new lot
and make sure that all the space requirements are taken care.
The façade design of the airport should reflect a distinct feature Mindanao culture or its
products in a modern way. It can non-linear forms and design-like of Zaha Hadid but in
a “Sustainable Design Manner”. It should certainly reflect Philippine culture, traditions
and products of Mindanao. The architect should make sure that the form should not look
like the Clark and Mactan International Airport which was already over copied. The
architect should make sure that the development is “instagramable”.
Make sure that the development is in compliance with all the Philippine Building Laws
including the laws that govern the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines in terms of
the height of the structures.
