INTRODUCTION TO THE
DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL
WORK AND SOCIAL CARE
Social work is a career where you can make a real
difference to the lives of individuals, families and
communities. Using principles of human rights and
social work values, social workers work in partnership
with service-users, carers and other professionals.
They apply relevant theories, the law, knowledge and
evidence to support individuals and families, promote
independence and prevent harm, neglect and abuse.
THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Social Work and Social Care is a multi-disciplinary
academic team committed to improving the wellbeing of individuals,
families and communities, and addressing inequalities and discrimination.
We achieve our aims through original and relevant research of social
issues and positive models of support, quality learning throughout
professional and practice careers, and international collaborations
in the field of social work and social care.
ABOUT US
The University of Birmingham has been committed to understanding
and responding to social issues through its research, education and
civic engagement from its founding in 1900. We were strongly
connected with the early days of the Birmingham settlement
movement and this provided opportunities for students to
engage with deprived communities in the city.
CAREERS
This course is designed for those considering research as a
career. That includes those wanting an academic career, for
whom this degree is ideal preparation for undertaking a doctorate
(PhD). It also includes those seeking a research career in such
areas as central government, local government, charities and in
consultancies and market/social research. The degree also
provides good transferable skills in evaluation and in analysing
data, and the ability to critique published research. Modules
