Fire Protection Engineering Bulletin No. 8.01
Sprinkler System Hydraulic Design Criteria

I. SCOPE
This Bulletin provides the minimum hydraulic design criteria for automatic
sprinkler installations in new construction and for upgrades to automatic sprinkler
installations in existing facilities. This revision adds requirements for paint area
protection (Tables 2a and 2b) and includes corrections to Tables 1 and 3.
This Bulletin provides the minimum requirements for all new (after 2015) sprinkler
system installations as well as upgrades to existing systems. For systems installed
through 2015, the version of this Bulletin used during the design stage of the project
remains in force even if a later revision to the Bulletin is published.
These requirements apply to all Company owned and leased facilities including
subsidiaries of Ford Motor Company. Where NFPA, Local, State or Federal or
National codes are more stringent than these standards, or other Company standards
referenced here; the more stringent requirements shall be followed.
This Bulletin and any associated Bulletins are owned by Ford Corporate Fire
Protection Engineering, Corporate Security and Fire.
Written approval from Corporate Fire Protection Engineering or the National Fire
Protection Engineer is required for deviations from the requirements presented in
this Bulletin. The procedures to follow for Bulletin deviations are outlined in Fire
Protection Engineering Bulletin No. 20, “Bulletin Deviation Procedures.”

(**) The 12.2 mm/min (0.30 gpm/ft2) density is acceptable for a standard body shop. This is an area assembling primarily metal
vehicle bodies with some in process metal storage. If there will be in process plastic part storage or plastic dunnage within the
body shop, treat the area as an assembly plant with respect to the sprinkler design. If there will be extensive MP&L areas with
plastic dunnage and parts refer to Ford Fire Bulletin 30 – Fire Protection for Storage of Rubber and Plastic Commodities.
(***) Where acceptable by local country codes and the local Authority Having Jurisdiction, sprinklers may be omitted if all of the
following are present:
 The building, equipment and storage are non-combustible
 No plastic dunnage is present.
 The shipping and receiving area shall be equipped with sprinkler protection as required above so any combustible packaging
material can be removed prior to moving parts into the unprotected body shop.
 Any robots shall have less than 380 l (100 gal) reservoirs and the oil shall be non-combustible.
 A Business Recovery Plan is in place
 Written approval by Corporate Fire Protection Engineering.

Sprinkler System Hydraulic Design Criteria

(*) General Table Notes:

1. For sprinkler systems with a design density of greater than 13.9 mm/min (0.34 U.S. gpm/ft2), new installations using a K-
115 (K-8) sprinkler are prohibited.
2. Sprinklers should be Standard Response. Fast Response (Quick Response) sprinklers are required to have a sample
laboratory tested after they have been in service 20 years and every 10 years thereafter. Standard response sprinklers are not
required to be tested until they have been in service 50 years.
Exception: Where Quick Response sprinklers are specifically required such as some in-rack protection schemes for
Flammable or Combustible Liquids.
Exception: ESFR sprinklers are by definition Fast Response sprinklers.
3. Sprinklers with “O” rings are forbidden
4. Add an additional 1900-lpm (500 U.S. gpm) for outside hose streams and 380 lpm (100 U.S. gpm) for inside hose streams
when designing automatic sprinkler protection systems in accordance to the requirements in this table.
Exception: For office areas, locker rooms, and dining areas, add only an additional 950 lpm (250 U.S. gpm) for outside
hose streams and 190 lpm (50 U.S. gpm) for inside hose streams when designing automatic sprinkler protection systems in
accordance to the requirements in this table.
5. Temperature ratings of sprinklers should be revised as needed to be at least 28°C (50°F) above maximum ambient
temperatures. See NFPA 13.

IV. REQUIREMENTS FOR INDOOR STORAGE IN FORD-OWNED DISTRIBUTION

FACILITIES
A. Storage Arrangements
The following storage arrangements are required to allow control of a fire in the
storage using only ceiling level sprinklers. Storage arrangements such as high bay
storage or automatic retrieval systems that do not meet the following requirements
need special consideration. Contact Corporate Fire Protection Engineering or the
National Fire Protection Engineer.
1. Separation within Storage Areas
a. Aisles between racks or blocks of storage shall be at least 3 m (10 ft.)
wide.
