THE family of promising Ulster motorcyclist Wayne Hamilton, who was killed while racing at the Manx Grand Prix yesterday, have paid tribute to a true gentlemen and sportsman. The 20-year-old Portadown man had a dream debut in the Newcomers A race on the Isle of Man on Saturday, and set the meeting alight, organisers said. He won the title on his first attempt, the race being seen as a stepping stone to the TT races. Last night his family said his star shone for only a short time, but very briefly with much success in his beloved sport. They added: His brothers and sisters Tyler, Laura, Jessica, Brian, Rachel and Emily have lost a much loved brother who was a true gentleman and sportsman. He was very much loved by his dad, mum, step-mum, grandparents
and friends and family. Waynes death comes after two other sporting tragedies on Saturday, with fellow biker Adrian McFarland losing his life in a race in the Czech Republic and Ards cricketer Peter Ritchie dying in a road crash. Ryan Farquhar, one of Northern Irelands most senior riders, said yesterday of Waynes death: I dont know what to say really. Its just so sad because he was such a young lad. He added: Its a bad time for Irish motorcycling after what happened with Adrian McFarland as well. Wayne was widely regarded as a top future racer in the making, and was holding third place in the Junior Manx Grand Prix yesterday when he crashed on his third lap, just after 2pm. Turn to page 5
