ABOUT SCHOOL OF LAW, NMIMS
niceties of the programs offered by world-class Universities over the world. The
school’s faculty members are well qualified and experienced with a wide range of
quality legal publications and are also associated with social justice legal education.
The student body is rich in terms of its diversity having students from various parts
of the country, different religions and sexual orientations, etc. School of Law aspires
to be a global center of scholarly excellence in the field of law and justice and will
prepare outstanding and innovative law professionals with a socially responsible
outlook through holistic legal education. A Law School with a global focus and

welfare, and justice through knowledge of the law.

DEFINITIONS
The following terms shall have the corresponding meanings unless otherwise
specified:
1. "Administrator” shall mean NMIMS School of Law, Hyderabad.
2. “Competition” shall refer to NMIMS’s 2nd National Moot Court
Competition(virtual), 2023
3. “Competition problem” shall refer to the facts and issues released by the
organizers of the competition with its clarifications and corrections.
4. “Competition rules” shall refer to the competition's official rules as amended
from time to time.
5. “IST” shall refer to Indian Standard Time.
6. “INR” shall refer to Indian National Rupee.
7. “Knockout round” shall refer to Quarter Finals, Semi-finals, and Final rounds
of the competition.
8. “Memorial” shall refer to the memorandum of written submissions submitted
by any participating team as per the Competition Rules.
9. “Court Room” shall refer to the online platform where the oral rounds will
take place.
10. “Organizing Committee” (hereinafter to be referred to as O.C.) shall refer to
the committee appointed for the administration and conduct of the
competition including any other authorized persons, and of all events leading
up to the competition.
11. “Official Email” shall refer to the official email id of the Moot Court Society
(MCS) NMIMS Hyderabad 2nd National Moot Court Competition (Virtual)
2023, i.e., mcs.solhyd@nmims.edu.in
12. “Participating Team” means the team which has registered for the competition
as per the rules given below.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
1. Venue: Every round would be conducted via the Online Meetings Application
(The links and the schedule of the meeting rooms shall be provided via mail
after the submission of memorials)
2. Dress code: The Dress Code for the competition will be:
For Ladies: White shirt and black pant with black blazer/formals.
For Gentlemen: White shirt, black trousers, black tie along with black blazer/
formals.
3. Language: All oral and written submissions are required to be made in English,
which shall be the official language of the competition.
ELIGIBILITY
1.All students enrolled bona fide in an undergraduate i.e., 3 years/ 5 years or post-
graduate law program conducted by any college or university shall be eligible for
participation in the competition.
2. Only 2 teams may register from a single institution.

TEAM COMPOSITION
1. Each team shall comprise of minimum two members and maximum of three
members. wherein two members shall be designated as speakers and one as a
researcher (optional).
2. Each team will be given a unique team code number after the registration, which
will thereafter be the team's identity and its members' identity.
3. In the case of a three-member team, there shall be 2 speakers and 1 researcher in
the team.
4. In the case of a two-member team, there shall be two speakers.
5. The team consisting of two speakers has to mention in the registration form who
will be the researcher among them.
6. The teams shall identify the speakers and researchers in the registration form.
7. The teams shall not disclose their identity whatsoever, except in the registration
form. Such disclosure shall result in disqualification subject to the discretion of the
Organizers.
8. There will be no substitution of team members after a team has submitted its
registration form, except with the permission of the organizers.

RULES FOR MEMORIAL SUBMISSION
1. Each team is required to prepare memorials for both sides, i.e., the petitioner and
the respondent.
2. All written submissions are required to be made in English, which shall be the
official language of the Competition.
3. At any stage of the competition, a team must be identified only by the
allotted team code.
4. All team members must refrain from disclosing the identity of their institution at
any time in any manner during the course of their participation in the competition.
5. Non – compliance to any of these rules shall lead to disqualification.
6. All teams are required to send soft copies of their memorials on or before 28th
March 2023 (11:59 P.M. IST) to mcs.solhyd@nmims.edu.in with the Subject
“Memorials (Team Code) - National Moot Court Competition.
7. All the memorials should be submitted both in pdf and word format.
8. A penalty of 5 points per day on each memorial shall be imposed for any submission
made post the specified time.
9. Memorials submitted 48 hours beyond the specified deadline shall not be evaluated.
10. Content of the memorial should not be plagiarized more than 20%. If the plagiarism
is between 21% - 50%, there shall be a penalty of 1 mark for every 5% of plagiarism.
11. The Organizers reserve a right to disqualify a team if the Memorials or any other
part thereof is found to be more than 50% plagiarized during scrutiny.
12. After the completion of the Competition, the Organizers reserve the right to use the
memorials as they deem appropriate.

MEMORIAL FORMAT
1. Each Memorial should be contained in a single file with the name of the file
being the allocated team code followed by the first letter of the party whose
arguments are presented in that Memorial i.e. 'P' for Petitioner and 'R' for
Respondent. For instance, the Petitioner Memorial of Team Code 8 should be
named as '8P.'
2. All soft copies of the Memorial submitted must be in Microsoft Word
Document format (.doc/.docx) and PDF format.
3. The Memorial must include A4-sized pages with a 1-inch margin on all sides.
4. All text within the Memorial, excluding the Cover Page, must be Times New
Roman, size 12 for the body with a 2-line spacing, size 14 for the main heading
(all caps), size 13 for the sub heading (small caps). The footnotes must be written
in Times New Roman, size 10, with 1 line- spacing between lines.
5. For any clarifications, the decision-making discretion is vested with the
Organizing committee- Moot Court Society, NMIMS Hyderabad.

MEMORIAL CONTENT

The memorials shall be mailed to mcs.solhyd@nmims.edu.in with the subject
of the mail being “Memorial Submission – ‘Team Code’”. Example – The
subject of mail for memorial submission of Team Code 21 shall be “Memorial
Submission – TC 21”. In case the subject is not as prescribed, memorials are
counted as not received; the organizing committee will not be responsible for
delay and default.
Identification marks of any type shall be strictly prohibited. Breach of this
rule shall lead to penalty or disqualification.
Memorial from each side shall carry a total of Hundred (100) marks. The
criteria for evaluating the memorial are as followed:

ORAL SUBMISSION
1. Each team comprising of 3 members, where 2 of the members are speakers, and
one is the researcher.
2. The researcher shall sit with the speakers during the orals and at no point, the
researcher shall be allowed to speak or address the bench until and unless asked
by the judge.
3. The speakers can provide copies of the compendium, only if the same is permitted
by the panel of judges in the respective courtrooms.
4. Each side shall plead for a maximum of 25+5 minutes in the preliminary round. 5
minutes will be given to each team for rebuttal and sur-rebuttal.
5. For rebuttal and sur-rebuttal, only one speaker shall be allowed to present. The
time reserved for rebuttal and sur-rebuttal cannot be divided between the
speakers. Rebuttal time shall not be reserved beyond 5 minutes.
6. Pleading time can be extended only at the discretion of the judges.
7. The participants shall ensure a good internet connection. In case of poor
connection, the waiting time shall be only 10 minutes, exceeding this time will
lead to disqualification. The organizing committee shall not be responsible for
any technical issues that arise from the side of the participants. The same is also
to be followed in case the participant does not report on the stipulated time for
any reason whatsoever.
8. Scouting is strictly prohibited.

SPLITTING OF TIME BETWEEN THE
SPEAKERS
1. Teams shall notify the court officers of the division of time between the 2 speakers
(including the time reserved for Rebuttal and Sur-Rebuttal) 10 minutes prior to the
commencement of the Rounds.
2. If Speaker 1 exceeds his/her reserved time, the additional time taken shall be
deducted from the time reserved by Speaker 2. Similarly, if Speaker 2 exceeds his/her
reserved time, the additional time shall be deducted from the time reserved for the
Rebuttals and the Sur-Rebuttals as the case may be. This rule may not be followed if
the additional time is awarded at the discretion of Judges to not be deducted from
the time of the subsequent speaker.
3. While granting additional time, if the additional number of minutes granted is not
specified by the Judges, it shall be presumed the additional time granted is 2 minutes.
4.The final decision as to the time structure and the right to Rebut or Sur-Rebut
shall vest with Judges.

PRELIMINARY ROUND
1. Preliminary round would be conducted on 7th April, 2023 via online platform which will be
intimated to the participants, the draw of lots shall take place online and the team has to argue
either for Petitioner or for Respondent in the first preliminary round, after which the assigned
sides will be changed for the second preliminary round. In case of a further tie, the highest
memorial marks will be taken into consideration to decide the winner.
2. No team shall face each other more than once in the preliminary rounds.
QUARTERFINAL ROUND
1. Top (8) eight teams will qualify for the quarter-final. The Quarter-final round would be
conducted on 8th April 2023 via an online platform which will be intimated to the participants.
2. Quarter-final round of the competition will consist of 50+10 minutes for oral pleadings, of
which 10 minutes will be for rebuttal and sur rebuttal. Petitioner and Respondent are each
allotted 30 minutes. In case of a further tie, the highest memorial marks will be taken into
consideration to decide the winner.
3. Extension of time is permissible at the discretion of the judges; this round will be the knock-out
round from which two teams will qualify for the final round.
4. The division of time per speaker for a team is left at the discretion of the team members subject
to a maximum of 15 minutes per speaker, including rebuttals.
5. The researcher shall not present any oral argument until asked by the judges. However, the
presence of the researcher is mandatory during the oral rounds.
6. Strict adherence to court manners shall be observed by all the participants.

SEMI-FINALS
1. The Semi-Final Round will be held on 9th April 2023 in online mode
2. Top (4) teams will be qualified for the Semi-final round. The winner from each
courtroom will proceed further to the Final round.
3. Semi-final round of competition will consist of 60 minutes for oral pleadings. The
appellant and respondent are each allotted 30 Minutes out of 5 minutes will be for
rebuttal and sur-rebuttal. The speaker should at least argue for 12 minutes each. Any
team exceeding the allotted time will lead to a deduction of 0.5 Marks per minute.
4. However, an extension of time is permissible at the judges' discretion; this round will
knock–out, and two teams will qualify for the final round.
5. The division of time per speaker for a team is left at the discretion of the team
members subject to a maximum of 15 minutes per speaker.
6. The researcher shall not present any oral argument until asked by the judges. However,
the presence of the researcher is mandatory during the oral rounds.
7. Strict adherence to court manner shall be observed by all the participants.

FINAL ROUND
1. The Final Round will be held on 9th April 2023 in online mode
2. The final round of competition shall consist of 60+10 minutes of oral pleadings. The
appellant and respondent are each allotted 35 minutes, of which 5 minutes will be for
rebuttal and sur-rebuttal.
3. Memorial marks will be added to the Oral Marks of the Final Round.
4. In case of a tie, the same procedure which is followed in the preliminary, quarter-
finals, and semi-final rounds will be followed Final Rounds.
5. However, an extension of time is permissible at the discretion of the judges this
round will be the last round of the competition.
6. The division of time per speaker for a team is left at the discretion of the team
members subject to a maximum of 17 minutes per speaker.
7. The researcher shall not present any oral argument until asked by the judges.
However, the presence of the researcher is mandatory during the oral round
SCOUTING
DELAY IN APPEARANCE/PRESENTATION
If a team scheduled to take part in a Round does not appear within 10 Minutes of
the scheduled time, the other team present shall be allowed to submit ex-parte.

REGISTRATION
1. Teams are supposed to complete their Registration by 15th March 2023 at 11:59
PM. Early Bird Registrations are open until 28th February 2023 at 11:59 PM.
2. The Registration Fee for early bird registrations is Rs. 2000.
Post early bird registration the Fee is Rs 3000.
3. Upon Payment, the teams must attach a screenshot of the invoice and upload the
same on the form as required.
4. The Registration shall be deemed complete only when the Registration fee has
been remitted successfully and the Application form is duly filled.
5. Once the application form is filled, the Organizing Committee (OC) shall send a
confirmation mail to the teams, which shall consist of their Team Code and an app
link through which they will be connecting for video conferencing.
6. The teams shall quote this Team Code in all further communications with the OC.
Fee once paid is non-refundable.
7. Once the registration fee is received by the organizers, it will not be refunded in
any circumstances

PAYMENT DETAILS
1. Best Team: Shall be given the Certificate of Merit along with a cash prize of
INR 25,000/- + Internship opportunity at S.S Rana& Co
2. Runner-Up Team: Shall be given the Certificate of Merit along with a cash
prize of INR 10,000/- + Internship opportunity at S.S Rana& Co
3. Best Mooter: The speaker having the highest score in the preliminary rounds
shall be given a cash prize of INR 5,000/
4. Best Memorial: The team has the highest average written submission score
from both sides shall be given a cash prize of INR 5,000/-
5. Certificates of Merit shall be given to all the teams qualifying for Semi-finals
and beyond.
6. Certificates of Appreciation shall be given to all the teams qualifying for
Quarter-final round
7. Certificates of Participation shall be given to all the participating teams.
