IN ENGLISH 6
(The Elements of a Short story)

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:

1. define and identify the five elements of a short story

2. appreciate the impotance of the 5 Elements of a short story

3. show teamwork and cooperation through participating in a group activity

identify the short story.

D. PRESENTATION

Now class, look at in the manila paper do you


have any ideas of these words?

Yes Ma'am. I know the word "


character”. It is the people or
animals in the story.

Very good! character is the one who played a


role in the story, it may be a people or
animals.

E. DISCUSSION

To tackle the other 5 Elements of the short


story. Who can read the definition and types
of character?
( student will read)

Character- a person are sometimes


even an animal who takes part in
the action of a story.

Protagonist- Good character in the


story.

Character is the one who played a role or Antagonist- Bad character in the
action in the story, it maybe people, animals story,
or even a things that has a role in a story.For
example, tturtle, snow white, dwarfs. Animals
are usually used as a character in the fables.
The character has a two types which are
protagonist who is good in a story and
antagonist are the bad character

Since you are familiar with the story of


Cinderella who do you think are the
characters of it?

Setting tells when or where the story happens.
2.Setting- tells when and where are
Its a time and place. For example, morning,
the story happened.
afternoon, at the beach, at the backyard.
That’s are the example of setting.

Based on our situation now if we are in a story

What is conflict?

3.Conflict- A problem or struggle


between two people, things, or
Conflict is a problem in a story. For example,
ideas.
the two cats are fighting beause of a bread. So
it tells the struggle between the characters.

4. Plot- Plot is a series of events


that make up a story.

1.Beggining- it gives the problem


faced by the main character.

2.Middle- it presents the actions


made by the characters to solve the
problem.

3.Ending- it gives the solution to the


In a plot it should consist beggining, middle problem.
and ending.In the beggining it lets the reader
know what’s happening. Middle describes the
problems your characters are trying to solve.
Ending gives the details on how the attempt to
solve them. For example,

Beggining- The queen asks the mirror ‘who is


the fairest of them all’ and is jealous when the
mirrors says that Snow White is the fairest.
Middle- Snow White lives with the seven
dwarfs in the forest until the queen tricks her
into eating a poisoned apple.

Ending- Snow White is saved from the


poisoned apple when the prince kissed her.

Lastly the Theme, who can read?

Theme will serve a moral lesson of a story. So


when you are trying to determine the theme
of a story, ask yourself what the author is ( student will read)
trying to tell you through the characters and

since it helps us to understand the story
clearly. It aslo helps organize the flow of a

Little Red Riding Hood was going to her Yes ma’am


Granny’s house. A big bad wolf heard about
this. He quickly locked Granny in a cupboard.
He dressed like Granny.He got into her bed.
Little Red Riding Hood arrived. She saw
Granny on a bed . She thought to heself, that
Granny looks different. The wolf could not
wait any longer. He jumped out of the bed and
tried to grab Little Red Riding Hood. She
screamed loudly. A woodcutter heard her
screams. He ran toward the house. He hit the
wolf hard. The wolf ran away. He let Granny
out of the cupboard. LIttle Red Riding Hood
and Granny thanked the woodcutter. They
never saw the big bad wolf again.

there and locked Granny in the cupboard. He
pretends to be Granny. Big bad wolf grabs
Little Red Riding Hood. The woodcutter hit the
wolf and helps Little Red Riding Hood and
Granny They never saw the Big bad wolf again.

F. APPLICATION

At this juncture, i will show you a video


entitled “The Crow and the Fox”. Everyone
watch and listen carefully.
Do you understand the story?

Now i will group you into two groups. The


group 1 will identify the character including
the protaginist and antagonist, settings and
conflict of a story that you’ve watch. While
the group 2 will identify the plot (which should
labeled the beggining, middle and ending) and
theme of a story.

Beggining- A hungry fox is looking


for food. The fox notices the crow
with cheese in its beak.

Middle- Using his charming words,


the fox tricks the crow into
dropping the cheese into the
ground and took it into her mouth.

Ending- The fox feeling satisfied,


and the crow left with nothing to it.
