INTRODUCTION
In today's competitive world, it is crucial to attain academic success in order to
have a better quality of life and a successful career in the future. A lot of
parents want their children to be successful in their career path, earn enough
money to enjoy a comfortable life and have a brighter future as well. Because
of these desires, many parents have set high hopes and expectations for their
children to perform well and excel in school. However, with high parental
expectations and aspirations, it creates parental pressure, which can have an
impact on students' academic performance. Parental pressure is behavior
exhibited by parents that is perceived by their children as indicating high,
unlikely, or possibly even unattainable expectations (Eisenbacher, 2012).

For most parents, their children's education is very important and highly
valued, which is why they set specific standards and norms for their children's
academic performance that they expect them to follow. Furthermore, parental
pressure has both positive and negative impact on students' academic
performance. According to Rahman and Monziri (2012), studies have shown
that when parents have high expectations on their children's academic
capability, they tend to study hard to fulfill those expectations. This implies
that parental pressure motivates students to take their academics more seriously
to attain good performance in school.
Nevertheless, when students always perform well in their scholastic activities
and receive a lot of academic achievement, parents become more obsessed on
their children's academic success, which challenges them to strive more, be
better, and to perpetually give their best in school. However, when parents put
their children under intense pressure on their academic performance, this leads
children to feel discouraged about performing better at their academics, and
they will also lose interest in studying.
A child's success is also a parent's greatest triumph because they serve as the
foundation and inspiration for their child to study harder. It just means that
parents truly play a significant role in their children's education, which is why
they need to know and understand how to properly support their children when
it comes to their academic activities. Other parents raise their standards and
expectations too high, causing some of the students to feel conscious about
their grades, which affects their academic performance negatively and
somehow positively. Hence, in this research, the researchers aim to determine
the advantages and disadvantages of parental pressure on students' academic
performance.
According to the Child and Youth Welfare Code of the Philippines, the child is
one of the most important assets of the nation. Every effort should be exerted to
promote his welfare and enhance his opportunities for a useful and happy life.
Each child is vulnerable and can potentially be impacted to thrive or to fail in
life. However, most parents have an immense influence on their student’s
intellectual growth, therefore interaction between home and school should be
maintained.
The success is measured according to the performance in each exam. The
expectation of perfect execution with unreasonable standards starting to weigh
heavily from academic performance. Parents have failed to acknowledge that
their children's mental tolerance is far from mature. It was considered that
some physiological symptoms such as headaches were signals of a mental

burden (Andleeb Haider, 2022). As a result, several problems such as anxiety,
depression, disruptive disorders, bi-polar disorders, mental health issues are
affecting the child’s development. These issues can lead to lack of motivation,
low self-esteem, social interaction problems, poor academic performance, and
even self-harm.
Thus, the study was conducted to determine the impacts of parental pressure
among the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Grade 11
students at South-East Asia Institute of Trade and Technology, Fairview
Branch.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Parents have been alongside since the moment their child first opened their
eyes. They took care of them when they were young, endured every tantrum
that their child was experiencing, and became worried sick if they had just a
little wound on the skin. Parents are the ones who acknowledge the
fundamentals of how to manage things. They are the ones who taught us what
is right and wrong. But do they truly understand what is right and wrong?
There are different kinds of parenting in this society, naturally — but one sort
of parenting that bothers children is the "pressure parenting type." The pressure
prompted children to experience different unpleasant emotions, — especially in

their academic performance. Consequently, some parents put excessive
pressure on their children to perform. For children, being under such intense
pressure might have catastrophic effects.
Children who feel immense pressure to perform well enough from their parents
as well as others can develop low self-esteem in a variety of aspects of their
lives, including their mental health to their sleep. Parents need to identify that
their child is unique and show them guidance to identify their raw talent for a
success story in society without pressurizing/influencing them.
Parents need to encourage, interact, and do introspection with the child while
accepting failures as pillars of success with a brave heart.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
State of the problem

-the objective of this study is to cognizance of society of how can affect the
students when their parents put some pressure on their academic
performance especially to stem students year by 2022-2023.
Specific problem
-specifically, the study aim to answer the following.
1. What causes parents to pressure their children?
2. How to encourage kids without pressuring them?
3. Does too much pressure have a bad effect on a student?
4. What are the possible effects of having a pressure on academic
performance?
4.1 Unstable mental health
4.2 Educational stress
4.3 It can lead to depression
4.4 Having a short memory
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Students
When students are burdened with such high expectations, even the best
intentions can go astray. Children are expected to score high in order to make
their parents proud. This study will help the students for the reason that they
are the ones who are under academic stress; this research may help them better
understand what they are going through and how to overcome or solve it. And
also, help them cope with anxiety and academic stress.
Teachers
The result of this study will help them understand the impact of their treatment
on students or when they grade a child's performance, as well as the
experiences of children who are subjected to parental pressure. It can make
them more professional and improve their understanding.
Parents/Relatives
The result of this study may help them to improve their parental guidance and
become better preachers to their children. As parents gain a better
understanding of child development, they use more affection and positive
reinforcement on their children and use less punishments that can pressure
them. Encouragement, coming from parents, can be a child’s steppingstone to
success. You are an important figure in your child's life, and he or she will
depend on you to teach them confidence, hard work, and excellence.
Future Researcher
The result of this study can serve as basis for further study on teaching people
how to construct self-efficacy and provide new ideas or information to people
about how they can best assist their research.
Society
Modern society is a highly competitive environment. Adding to the pressure on
students, considered the future, are those parents who place mountains of
responsibility on their children. One can only imagine what the child goes
through. The result of this study will help them in evaluating existing programs
in terms of student needs and abilities and making necessary changes.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS

This study aims to better understand the influences of parental pressure on the
academic performance of Grade 11 STEM students at the South East Asia
Institute of Trade and Technology (SEAITT). In order to shed light on them
and explain their impacts to their children, this study intends to address the
psychosocial issues, primarily those related to academic stress and parental
pressure.
Moreover, parental pressure is somehow related to academic success, cultural
and social standards, and other factors (Bay Atlantic University, 2022). The
two effects of parental pressure are broken down into two categories: academic
success and poor interpersonal and physical and mental health. We all
understand that parents always want the best for their children; nevertheless,
despite their best efforts, they are nonetheless creating an unhealthy amount of
pressure. Many students are burn out on trying to precisely complete their work
in relation to their academic goals or performance due to parental pressure. Too
much pressure can cause a variety of issues, including how students compare
themselves to other students who are far outperforming them academically.
This situation has both good and bad aspects, but it primarily deals with
students' freedom and how happy they can be enjoying their studies without
feeling pressured by their parents.

The target population of this research is focusing mainly on Grade 11 STEM
students of South East Asia Institute of Trade and Technology. We are
conducting this to identify how parental pressure affects their academic
performance, general well-being and how much tension they are carrying.
The study is delimited only to Grade 11 STEM students of South East Asia
Institute of Trade and aged 16-18 years old. The main purpose of the study is to
indicate the effects of parental pressure on their academic performance as well
as their personal problems such as mental health, massive stress and anxiety.
The effects of parental pressure on their behavior toward their peers and how
they respect their teachers, however, are not included in the study. Also, it
excludes any alteration in a child's behavior outside of school, such as bullying,
drug addiction, and other issues.

ASSUMPTION OF THE STUDY
ASSUMPTION OF THE STUDY The study focused on how parental pressure
affects the academic performance of Grade 11 Science, Technology,
Engineering, Mathematics students in South East-Asia Institute of Trade and
Technology. The following assumptions were made:
1. The respondents will be a reliable source of information and transparency.
2. The researchers will be able to thoroughly explain the purpose of the study
and its relevance to the respondents.
3. The researchers assumed that the respondents will provide a factual and
honest answer in every questionnaire.
4. The researchers assumed that parental pressure caused bad effects on
respondents' academic performance.
