0 Experiment 2: SIEVE ANALYSIS - DETERMINATION OF PARTICLE SIZE

DISTRIBUTION BY DRY SIEVING

2.1 INTRODUCTION

All types of soil have different particles of size such as coarse soils or fine soils. . From this it
is possible to determine whether the soil consists predominantly of gravel, sand, silt or clay
size. Which of these size ranges is likely to control the engineering properties of the soil.

This test covers the quantitative determination of the particle size distribution in a soil down
to the fine and size. This method shall not be used unless it has been shown that for the type
of material under test it gives the same results as the methods of analysis by wet sieving.

2.2 OBJECTIVE

To study the size distribution of soil by dry sieving.

2.3 APPARATUS

● British Standard test sieves as follows:-

5mm, 2mm, 1.18mm, 0.6mm, 0.425mm, 0.300mm, 0.212mm, 0.150mm, 0.63mm and
an appropriate receiver.
● A balance accurate to 0.5g.

● Sieve brushers.

● At least six metal trays.

● A scoop

● A mechanical sieve shaker

2.4 PROCEDURES

1. All of British Standard test sieve must be weight to get 0.1% of its total mass by using
balance readable. Weighed the sample soil 200g to use for this test

2. Arrange the sieve with the formation from the larger of sieve to smaller because the
sample will down through the sieve from top to bottom.

3. Put the sample in the top of sieve for sieving process.

4. Closed the opening in the top of the sieve and set up the British Standard test sieve to
the mechanical sieve shaker. The minimum time needed is 10 minutes.

5. After finishing the sieving process. The soil sample will be placed in a stack of sieve.
It will show the difference of sample soil from the coarse soil to the fine soils.
Weighed all the sieve to make a calculation.

6. The different types of particle soil sample must be placed in a metal tray.

7. Finally, all British Standard test sieves must be clean by using sieve brushes. All the
data must be calculated to get their percentage.

2.6 CONCLUSION
In the experiment, we can conclude the different type of soil has the different particle of
size such as coarse soil and fine soil. In this experiment, the procedure given is to remove the
silt soil and clay soil. This method covers the quantitative determination of particle size
distribution in an essentially cohesion less soil down to fine sand size. The number sieves
describe what size aggregate fall through to the next. After the material has been sieved, we
remove each tray, weight every size, and record each weight and ensure that all material
entrapped within opening of the sieve are cleaned out and included in the weight retained.

After weighting each sample, we do some calculation to determine percentage (%) of retained
aggregate, cumulative, aggregate retained and aggregate passing of each sieve.
We conclude that sieve analysis is the simple and easy way to determine the particle size
distribution of aggregate and this sieve analysis procedure also easily use by other people to
get the accurate size of aggregate with using different size of sieve.
