Fences
Unhealed trauma is something that many parents make their childs burden to deal with.
There are many people with many stories of why some people shouldn't become parents. Some
people are simply not ready yet, but they didn’t have any other choice. Yet the unhealed trauma
most parents have can make for an even traumatic experience for the child. In the movie Fences,
Troy Maxson was born in a time where people of color were still segregated. They
weren’t allowed the same liberties as someone with a pale complexion. Specifically in Troy’s
case, major league sports teams were for white people only. He claimed to have been more than
good enough to be on a major league team if it was permitted. By the time that the country began
to change and started to come to the realization that the color of your skin was just that. A color.
It didn’t mean they deserved any less. People began to realize how unfairly colored people were
treated and the times began to change. Unfortunately for Troy, by the time this movement began
he was just too old to play baseball anymore. Baseball was Troy’s outlet. He played baseball for
his whole life. He put his heart and soul into the game and in that game was where it was
crushed.
Troy’s son, Cory, began to play football. He started developing a passion for it, just like
his father with baseball. His goal was to be a professional. Cory put as much time and effort into
the sport as he could. He made compromises, like changing his work schedule to weekends so he
could practice with the team. Cory caught the eye of a recruiter who was very interested in him.
When Cory began to tell his father about this, he lost it. Troy denied meeting with any recruiter,
which was required if Cory wanted to accept this opportunity given to him. Troy told Cory he
needed to go get his job back and quit the team. This caused so much distress for Cory. Football
was his outlet. He had a love for the game like no other; and, he was good too. Troy’s unhealed
wound created from the inability to live out his dream, caused him to squash his sons.
Parents are strange. They love their children so much. They want what’s best for them,
but they think they get to decide what is best. No one can decide what is best for them except
themselves. This game of back and forth creates resentment and issues that the child will have to
deal with on their own in the future. Parents hold so much power in their children's lives.
Literally and figuratively. All kids want to do is make their parents proud. Even in the most
dysfunctional families. They want their parents to love them and support them through their
decisions, not make them for them. Feeling unwanted and unloved by the most important people,
Mistreatment from parents can pass on from generation to generation. Some people strive
to be nothing like their parents, but most people become them anyway. It is a hard cycle to break
away from, because it is all they know. Troy talks about his strained relationship with his father.
His father's job was nothing more than feeding him and giving him a place to stay. He thought
that meeting his children's physical needs was enough, but children need their emotional needs
met too. It is clear that Troy had his conceptions on what being a father is supposed to be like.
Parents are the most influential people in one's life. They shape the person you become,
for better or worse. If parents do not heal from their past traumas, all they will do is create new
ones for the people they brought into this world. It is not the responsibility of the child to fix the
parent.
