Vacancy Announcement

Doctors Without Borders India (DWBI) aims to provide medical assistance without any kind of
discrimination including offer medical assistance during natural and manmade disasters through
establishment of healthcare centers, implementing medical programs for critical illnesses on its own or with
partners, working for creating medical awareness and capacity building and carry out/sponsor research to
provide strategic input on relevant medical treatment options in India.

Position: Laboratory Technician


Location: Karong, Manipur
Duration: 12 Months
Start Date: ASAP

We offer:
 Salary Gross INR 36,540/-per month (non-negotiable)
 18 days annual leave; 12 days paid leave as per specified list of holidays; Sick/Casual leave of 12 days

PURPOSE OF POST:
Perform clinical laboratory activities according to DWBI protocols, security and hygiene measures in order
to obtain results to determine the patient’s treatment.

FUNCTIONAL AND HIERARCHICAL LINES


Reports to (Hierarchical): Laboratory Supervisor
Reports to (Functional): Project Medical Referent

ACCOUNTABILITIES:
• According to medical prescription, preparing and performing clinical exams/tests with appropriate
techniques and following DWBI protocols and procedures. This function includes, among others:
• Taking blood, vaginal and urethral samples.
• Centrifuging blood and urine samples.
• Performing laboratory exams (serology, hematology, biochemistry, bacteriology or
parasitological, according to context of the mission).
• Performing quality controls according to guideline and protocol.
• Ensuring proper reporting and registration of the sample results in order to keep a written track of
activity and give information to the relevant persons, ensuring confidentiality.
• Taking care, manage and organize efficiently the laboratory material/equipment:
• Perform cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment used. Following the user manual
and protocols and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning
• Applying hygiene and safety protocols, doing daily cleaning /maintenance, sterilization, washing
general glassware after procedures are done.
• Ensuring proper sample waste disposal according to DWBI protocols and highest safety standards.
• Supplying orders, do stock, storage conditions follow-up, keep inventory.
• Keeping organized the data collection system of laboratory results and all information generated from
the analysis done.
• Reporting all relevant information linked to the activity in the laboratory to the line manager,
especially the loss/robbery/damage of laboratory equipment or medicines.
• Performing minor maintenance and cleaning of the biomedical equipment following user manual and
protocols. Alerting the supervisor in case of malfunctioning of any device.
• To ensure and follow up of samples sent and report to external labs, including private labs and
National Tb Programme.

CONTEXT SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Patient handling, communication and registration


 To receive patients in the sample collection room.
 Properly explain to the patients how to collect stool, quality urine and sputum specimens.
 Register the patient in the register books/electronic register specifying name, address, and tests
to be performed.
Specific laboratory tests
 Responsible for performing any specified laboratory tests (related to HIV, TB, HCV testing and
other medical conditions) according to set SOP
 Smearing and staining procedures to some of the specimens.
 Centrifuge blood samples and separate serum/plasma for analysis.
 Centrifuge urine/STI samples for microscopic analysis
 Preparation of reagents according to SOP.
Handling, collection and transportation of samples
 Responsible for the packing and unpacking of lab materials from the vehicles.
 Responsible for sample preparation and transportation to reference lab.
 Collection of samples and safety precautions according to protocol
 Receive sputum, stool and urine samples and to check that the labelling coincide with the
information in the lab register book/electronic register.
Laboratory equipment and material handling
 To do the daily, weekly maintenance of all the lab equipment according to SOP
 Responsible for assisting the lab supervisor or Laboratory Manager in assessing or evaluating
the laboratory facilities;
 Responsible for monitoring the cold chain required for laboratory reagents and kits in the clinic
site
 Responsible for informing the lab supervisor and Laboratory Manager in case of dysfunction of
any material or equipment;
 Responsible for preparing laboratory supplies for field work
 Responsible for identifying rupturing and expired items in the lab and inform immediately to
Lab supervisor/Lab Manager.
Reporting and filing
 Responsible for correct recording of lab tests results various
 Responsible for assisting the lab supervisor for preparing and sending the lab standard indicator
report to Lab Supervisor.
 To maintain an organized filing system with laboratory results, stock and other files as specified
by laboratory Supervsior.
Laboratory hygiene management
 Ensure proper disposal of contaminated materials and segregation of waste in the laboratory.

REQUIREMENTS
Education Essential Laboratory Technician diploma/degree

Experience Minimum 1 Year working experience essential

Languages Local language and mission language essential

Knowledge Computer literacy (word, excel and internet)

Technical qualification to use and effect minor maintainence on standard


laboratory equipment.
