PID recovery feature VS Anti-PID feature

As we know, The present technology of On-grid Inverter is based on Transformer less(TL) design,
because of TL design vast benefits like higher efficiency, less weight, low cost and etc. But these
inverters are not galvanically isolated. Hence according to the IEC 62109-2 the safety regulations, the
inverter’s negative pole of the input is not allowed connect to the ground or earth directly, To fulfill
IEC 62109-2 clause none of the PV polarity should be grounded, if it is done, then it leads to a leakage
current in inverter, causes the decrease of cable insulation that results in weaker cable, Finally inverter
trips with insulation error, so in order to maintain healthy Insulation resistance of cable and over-all
safety of the generation plant, it is necessary to fulfill IEC 62109-2.

Solution
PID recovery feature with Solis Inverters: PID recovery device or kit is integrated in the
Inverter. It contains a rectifier, which is used to convert the Voltage from AC to DC. When Inverter
goes to standby mode, then this device start working (by interlocking switch). It takes the AC voltage
from PCC (point of common coupling) and convert it into DC and feed this DC potential between the
PV negative and Ground to energize the electrons, so that electrons can recover their initial position.
In this system, PV negative grounding is not required. This process will be worked during night time
or when inverter is on stand-by mode.

Selection of Cable:
Thus, we see the final result comes out to be less than 1100 V.
Hence, Customer can choose the 1.1kV AC Cable.

Anti-PID feature with other brands: As we know, the PV negative grounding is not possible
along with the transformer less Inverters. Here, we use isolation transformer with Rectifier. Isolation
transformer takes the 750volts from AC tapping and integrated rectifier converts it into Dc +750V
and feed it, between the PV negative and ground. Further process is same as in PID recovery. In this
philosophy, both process (Power generation & Anti-PID) works simultaneously. It has a drawback,
when ground fault will be occurred in the system, there might be threat/possibility of mixing of
AC+DC voltage for AC cable. That’s why we need to consider the voltage grade of AC cable as per
the vector sum of Vrms.ac & Vrms.dc.

Selection of Cable:

Since the Anti-PID process happens at day time simultaneaously PV generation, there need to consider DC
voltage in AC side so the AC cable voltage formula is

𝑉𝑝ℎ−𝑝ℎ 2 𝑉𝐷𝐶 2
• Vrms of AC cable : 𝑉𝑟𝑚𝑠 =√(1.1 ∗ ) +( )
√3 2
• Phase to Phase Voltage is 800V and Vdc = 1500V
Substituting actual values in the formula

800 2 1500 2
• Vrms = √(1.1 ∗ ) +( ) = 905.8 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑠
√3 2

Phase to Phase voltage= 𝑉𝑟𝑚𝑠 *√3 = 905.8 *√3 = 1569 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑠

Thus, we see the final result comes out to be greater than 1100 V.
Hence, Customer should go with 1.9/3.3kV HT AC Cable.

Conclusion: As per above explaintaion, we can use AC LT cable with PID recovery features.
