Process Design Project – Project 2


Design of a 100.000 ton/year Cumene Plant – detailed equipment design
This part of the project entails the detailed design of major items of equipment, and it
shall be done individually, i.e. each member of the group selects one of the following
tasks. Groups with 4 (four) members can choose a combination of either (A, B, C, D)
or (A, B, C, E), while groups with 5 (five) members have to do (A, B, C, D, E).

In some of the designs below, heating and cooling utilities are required. The following
ones are assumed to be available:
− High pressure steam is available at 254 °C (saturated).
− Medium pressure steam is available at 185.5 °C (saturated).
− Cooling water is available at 20 °C and can be heated to a maximum of 30 °C
before returning to the cooling towers.

A. Reactor
The Plug Flow Reactor (PFR) is used, and the reaction kinetics are as follows:

1) Size the reactor using any hand or computational methods you have learned during
this course or from the previous courses, e.g. 28342 – Reaktionsteknik.

2) Perform a detailed design of the cumene reactor with PRO/II. In PRO/II, in “unit
kinetic data” the following units shall be used: T in K; volume in L (liter); time in s;
weight in g and P in bar. The units of activation energy are kJ/mol. For a starting reactor
size you may use the dimensions provided in the handout.

3) Calculate the following utility requirements (flowrates):
− Cooling water to reactor aftercooler
− Steam to reactor preheater.

4) Make parts A.1) and A.2) again using the following kinetics, and present only the
main results in your report. We will refer to it as the new catalyst.

B. Benzene/Cumene Separator
1) Design the benzene/cumene separator using a McCabe/Thiele diagram (in two ways,
(i) hand-drawing and (ii) plotting the lines by solving the corresponding equations one
line by one line), and the correlations provided in this course. You should choose an
appropriate recycle ratio.

Note: for this hand design assume only these two components benzene and cumene
(assume the other components are either benzene or cumene).

2) Perform a detailed design of the column (now considering all components) using the
rigorous model (distillation) in PRO/II. Your results from the hand design, part B.1),
can be used as initial estimates for your PRO/II rating/design.

3) Size the column (diameter and height) using hand calculations and correlations
provided in this course.

4) Calculate the following utility requirements (flowrates):


− Cooling water to the condenser
− Steam to the reboiler

C. Cumene Cooler and Reboiler of the Benzene/Cumene Separator


1) Design a heat exchanger for the cumene cooler, which cools the cumene product
from the separation column point to 30 °C and 1 atm before sending it to storage. This
design may be performed using correlations (Excel spreadsheet) provided during this
course.

2) Perform a detailed design of the Cumene cooler using the rigorous model (rigorous
HX) in PRO/II.

3) Follow the first part procedure of part C.1), and estimate the area of the Reboiler of
the Benzene/Cumene Separator, consulting the group member who is working on the
project B for the Reflux Ratio if it is needed. In this task, we assume the overall
coefficient U=750 W/m2 C.

4) Calculate the following utility requirement (flowrates):


− Cooling water to the cumene cooler
− Steam to the reboiler

D. Cumene/Diisopropyl benzene Separator
1) Design the cumene/diisopropyl benzene separator using a McCabe/Thiele plot (in
two ways, (i) hand-drawing and (ii) plotting the lines by solving the corresponding
equations one line by one line), and correlations provided in this course. You should
choose an appropriate recycle ratio.
Note: for this hand design assume only these two components cumene and diisopropyl
benzene (assume the other components are either cumene or diisopropyl benzene).
2) Perform a detailed design of the column (now considering all components) using the
rigorous model (distillation) in PRO/II. Your results from the hand design, part D.1),
can be used as initial estimates for your PRO/II rating/design.

3) Size the column (diameter and height) using hand calculations and correlations
provided in this course.

4) Calculate the following utility requirements (flowrates):


− Cooling water to the condenser
− Steam to the reboiler

E. Steam Preheater and Condenser of the Benzene/Cumene Separator


1) Design a heat exchanger for the first (steam-heated) reactor preheater, which heats
the reactant stream to 214 °C before sending it to the fired heater for further heating.
This design may be performed using correlations (Excel spreadsheet) provided during
this course with appropriate modifications.

2) Perform a detailed design of the steam-heated preheater using the rigorous model
(rigorous HX) in PRO/II.

3) Follow the procedure of part E.1), and estimate the area of the Condenser of the
Benzene/Cumene Separator, consulting the group member who is working on the
project B for the Reflux Ratio if it is needed. In this task, we assume the overall
coefficient U=450 W/m2 C.

4) Calculate the following utility requirement (flowrates):


− Steam usage in the preheater
− Cooling water to the condenser

Requirements (least) of the report submission

Your project submission should be in the form of a design report and should also
include a legible, organized set of calculations justifying your recommendations,
including any assumptions you have made. You should describe the operation of the
unit you have designed – with reference to its context in the cumene production process.
Attach any software files you have used (PRO/II designs, spreadsheets, etc.)

The total length of the report shall be no more than 15 pages (excluding Title,
References and Appendix).
