MODULE 2 - WORK VALUES

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
a. Classify 10 work values that are meaningful to help achieve personal and
professional goal.

b. Increase awareness of personal work values that will assist you in becoming a
productive individual.

c. appreciate the importance of values in the work place

Group Size: Groupings Activity


Time Frame: 30 minutes
Materials: Laptop, Projector, Printed Materials.
Ice Breaker: Guess what I do.
Instruction: Each group will select a representative who will draw a certain profession. The
representative will then be given 30 seconds to act-out the profession drawn. The rest of the
members must determine the exact profession before the timer ends.
Professions in the draw lots:
- Nurse
- Engineer
- Teacher
- Doctor
- Police
- Construction Worker
- Soldiers
- Fashion Designer

What is Work Values?
 Work values are beliefs or principles relating to your career or place of work.
 They describe what you believe matters regarding your career.
10 Filipino Work Values
1. Environmental- The type of climate we have here is the reason that we aren’t used to
very cold or very hot environment, and Filipinos considers this much. Not too cold
and not too hot. Filipino love to work usually that isn’t far from their homes.
2. Familial- related to the unity, emotional closeness, and strong family ties, respect for
parents. These traits separate us most from western and other continents.
3. Intellectual Achievement Oriented- This gives an individual the freedom to think
and learn how and why things work, autonomy in doing his job, so that in success
there is a sense of pride of a job well done.
4. Interpersonal- Emotional closeness, “pakikisama,” respect for authority, and
hospitality.
5. Managerial- Harmony between human and material resources to accomplish the
objectives of the organization.
6. Material- The desire to gain prestige, security, and economic returns.
7. Occupational- Related to the exercise of ones occupation. Subsumed on this are
fairness, competence, altruisms, self-regulation/occupational autonomy and public
service.
8. Organizational- Related to ones membership in the organization, with the intention
of eventually helping each other to reach full potential and goals.
9. Religious- The ability to exercise one’s faith or religion in the workplace. This is a
common practice here noticing that the Filipinos had a variety of religions legally
operating all over the country.
10. Variety- Ability to interact with different types of jobs.
Conclusion:
Each people have different perspective in life. They differ from one another; from passion,
belief, religion, principles, way of life, and many others. Same as in the workplace, every
workplace has different set of values, so do the people who work there. Work values are the
beliefs and principles relating to your career. They describe what you believe matters
regarding your career. When your values line up with how you do your living and your job,
you start to feel more satisfied and confident. Living or working in ways that doesn’t align
with your values can lead to dissatisfaction, confusion, and discouragement. So there is valid
reason to clarify your values, and seek to match your work to them.
ACTIVITY:
Activity: Can you Identify me?
Instruction: Students are provided with a scenario incorporating Filipino Work Values.
Identify the work value(s) specified in each item and justify your choice.
1. Keven wants to achieve a promotion at work. For him to achieve that promotion, he must
make at least 10% more sales in the quarter than his coworkers. His coworkers often leave
work early or take days off. Keven refuses to take days off or leave early until he achieves his
goal for sales. Hence, he always sets his goals to achieve more things, and he tends to want to
succeed and improve upon his goals, accordingly, he does not get bored.
Answer: Intellectual Achievement Oriented
2. Being a soldier is indeed a difficult profession to have. In the case of Robert, during his
mission, he got an endemic disease due to unclean water, polluted air, and poor sanitation.
However, with the help of his troops in managing environmental issues to optimize the
situation, he was able to compose himself and now enjoying his chosen profession.

3. The HR manager at a cooperative company is Angel. One day, a coworker came to her
and said that she had been the victim of religious prejudice. Following that, Angel
conducted a seminar on creating a culture of respect among coworkers. She underlines
that exhibiting mutual respect entails allowing everyone the time and space to express
their religious beliefs, respecting others' spiritual habits like midday prayers, and not
presuming that everyone adheres to the same schedule and set of beliefs.

4. Jonathan, a member of the product marketing team in the food business, contributes
significantly to decision-making and problem-solving in each situation that the team
faces. Since he has a degree in psychology, he can help in understanding and
implementing theories to produce effective results, such as developing commercials that
will stimulate the interest of their target market. His talents will greatly aid in reaching
goals, as he also engages other departments.

5. Carla is a call center agent in a well-known company in Davao City. She is a top-
performing employee in their department. She sleeps and rests at first throughout the day
because she works the graveyard shift. To be with her family and loved ones, she
sacrifices her time for rest. Carla constantly gives her family time priority over her
employment and work-related activities. Because of this value, she continues to grow and
work in the call center industry.
