Mr.

Tyrone Wilson 4/20/23

To: The Constituents of Ulster County

My whole life has been dedicated to bringing people together. Even as a kid
growing up in Harlem, I was the peacemaker trying to bridge differences. The last
thing I ever want to do is offend anyone. I was raised by a single powerful woman
who raised me to embrace life and to serve with dignity.
In my haste to speak out about cancel culture when a school administrator made a
mistake or to underscore the point that we are more similar than different or
acknowledge a community that lifts up their members, I inadvertently used terms
and expressions that were offensive. The intent was to heal wounds and instead it
caused pain. For that I am truly sorry.

When I was hired as Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission, I received

no training or guidance. I was immediately thrown into responding to the Covid
pandemic. During the beginning of the pandemic, I created the PPE tour that
handed out more than 3,000 PPE and 500 Narcan kits throughout Ulster County. It
was a year and a half on the job before I was able to settle in and focus on the
mission of the Commission and handle cases.

In hindsight, I wish that my requests for training were not ignored. But they were.
The County should have provided ongoing workshops and classes to better equip
me to understand cultural and community differences. It’s clear to me now that
what was considered joking or terms of endearment and friendship in my diverse
childhood neighborhood are not necessarily taken the way I meant them in
different groups or life experiences.

I hope that I will be judged by the good I have done in the community and not by
unintentionally hurtful language. I am proud of my work as Commissioner. I
helped the County Executive house and feed constituents at the Midtown Center
during a fierce and destructive ice storm. When Kinston lost two of our young
precious souls to gun violence, I immediately jumped into action and started the
LIGHTS ON Program that continues today, providing 200+ kids a safe place to go
every Friday night for meals, mentorship, and recreation. Despite no training or
system in place, I created the system and programs that now exist. My
accomplishments and dedication better reflect who I am than how I am being
portrayed.
No one ever told me that I offended them. Instead, they reported it to the County.
Had they come to me, it would have been an opportunity for dialogue and positive
change. I apologize to anyone I hurt. I have always treated people with dignity and
respect no matter their sex, color, or creed. And l will continue to do so.
